Modric deserves Ballon d'Or, but Ronaldo will get it

Any thoughts from fanboys about Cristiano and Messi not showing up? When they win, they come. For me, pathetic behaviour from both of them but especially from Ronaldo because he played with Modric 5 years.

Didn’t Ronaldo’s sister or agent make some public fuss about it being a disgrace if he didn’t win it? He clearly isn’t interested in his team mate winning the award or showing up to support him. Great player, but a really petulant child as well.

Messi could have shown up as well of course, but the circumstances were a bit different. He wasn’t up for the award and neither were any of his team mates. Whether he would have come in those cases we will never know.

If one of the people here with more incentive than me actually disagreed and argued with me instead of leaving a snarky comment about my bias every time I comment as an attempt to get others to disregard my point then at least I'd feel like I'd deserve something.
You deserve a lot. Gotta appreciate the effort in defending your champion.

For what exactly? If you're judging it on goal scoring Ronaldo and Messi scored more.

If you're judging it on silverware he won none. He's team didn't even challenge for their domestic league.

To me he played the best footy out of all. Anyway I really don’t think Modric deserves this. He’s become really overrated as of late amongst hipsters

Nice that Marta brought her sister with her to share in her win.

I think they should have come, to be fair to Messi he wasn't nominated in the final 3 so didn't have a chance to win.
Even if Ronaldo did come ,with a game still to play midweek, people would still be judging and criticizing every gesture and look. "He didn't clap hard enough" "He didn't smile" Same way they think he hates when team mates score which is stupid. Will never please everyone. His teammates rarely ever say a negative thing about him, but there are always fans that think they know more from seeing youtube compilations than the people that see him and train with him everyday

Atletico, Juventus and Roma ties in CL for example.
That wasn't this season, unless you think he was absent in the Juventus group stage games which would be kinda odd (besides that he wasn't absent in the KO game in 2017 either)....

If we're going on who played the best Footy to give the awarded to, then Messi wins it 11 years in a row, surely?

I think Modric deserves to be up top 3 for his season and fantastic world cup. However, you could argue Ronaldo should win the Ballon D'or.

No Messi didn't play better footy than Salah last year imo (consistency being a big factor)

He was the best player in the league by a mile, and same for the cup.

He had 4 appearances in the CL in 2018, was great in 2, good in one and bad in another. How is than inconsistency?. It's not like Salah blew him away in the WC either

It's metaphorical. Quarters in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

I fully agree. Arsehole move. Tristiano is mad (shock!) at everyone in Madrid apparently.

Great player. Horrible colleague.

The league doesn't matter. Or something.

Messi was good to go but had a family emergency apparently. He was confirmed to be coming initially

How exactly was Salah more consistent than Messi?
Salah was also the best player in his league, and also one of the two best players in the CL, together with Mane

So yeah, he was indeed more consistent than Messi. If it weren't a WC year, Salah should have won the UEFA and FIFA awards instead of Modric. He was clearly the best player of the season at club level

The coleagues love him. The fans that want to vindicate their dislike of him believe the bullshit stories in the media.

Tristiano being mad at everything to do with Madrid despite saying nothing but great things about Madrid is a funny one. How many quotes taken out of context did the Madrid media need to make that one up?

Like you happily and continuously citing all the "Messi is secretly Machiavelli reborn" stories surrounding the Argentinian NT?

This thread is fun.

Think his league performances were overhyped. Also, you think he and Mane were the best players in the CL? Above any Madrid players?

Congratulations to Modric. That is amazing really in an era of Messi and Ronaldo, can't say it isn't deserved either but he is sort of lucky to squeeze himself in there. Has come a long way since the Spurs days, very cool!

Yes. Cristiano stood out in a few games and was probably the best player until the QF, but the CL doesn't stop at the QF. Marcelo was more consistent, but never stood out as much. Sergio Ramos, maybe...

Salah and Mane were great all the way, and Mane single-handedly kept liverpool alive until Karius decided he wasn't gonna let them win

We won on a combination of experience, talent, and every break going our way, let's not pretend otherwise, it was anything but a dominant european campaign. I'm still laughing at the Bayern games

I agree that he showed up in the CL pretty much every game and might have been the best player there, but Salah wasn't as consistent in the league as Messi. He had some mediocre/poor games against top teams like United twice , Chelsea and City away.

It's a proper award to give him and say: 'You've been consistent and brilliant everywhere you played'.

33 years old and still running the show in Madrid and Croatia. Legend.

He wasn’t even the best player in his league, man.

Do people think Modric would get the award if Ronaldo stayed at Madrid? I wouldn't bet on it.

It shouldn't matter too much, but I feel the same way. It's his problem though, wanted more money and moved to a less prestigious club.

 And where is it that you read/hear these great things he says about Madrid if not in the media aswell? Or do you know him personally?

Listen man, we will always remember him as a phenomenal player for us, but this doesn't mean that we need to defend everything else he does outside the pitch. He obviously does great things too as I know he's involved in a lot of charity projects but surely you have to agree that he sometimes comes over as a bit of a dick in regards to his colleague football players? Or do you think he's perfectly normal in that regard?

Where are we getting this from though? Actual quotes from these colleagues are complimentary and friendly. Marcelo, Ascensio has been quoted saying they were a close team when Ronaldo was there. Even Ramos called him a legend and said the club would wish him the best until we meet him(on the pitch). Even back to United has anyone ever said he was a terrible team mate and a dick? Most all say hes determined, and trains the hardest of anyone and dedicated. Modric himself said Ronaldo and he have a good relationship and he privately texted him a congratulatory message and said he deserved the award.

Does he look petulant on TV during games sometimes sure Id agree but that to me has to be weighed by the comments people that work with him say. We have heard from other players and other teams dissent and rivalries that were actually corroborated. I find it weird its accepted as fact sometimes that hes a terrible team mate when hes been on multiple teams in multiple leagues now and you don't hear ex players putting things out like he was a nightmare or awful to work with.

"I don't want to disparage anyone, any partner, but when they're not the best ... I like playing with Karim, Bale, Marcelo, but when they don't play it's difficult. I don't mean that Jese, Lucas and Kovacic are not good, but if everyone was at my level, maybe we'd be leaders." That's what he said after a loss one time.

Or now the thing with Modric where his whole camp were saying that Ronaldo deserved the award. Of course, he himself won't be saying anything about it to the press but let's be honest, we know what he thinks about it too.

Or that time moments after we win the CL with a wonderful goal from Bale where he had to make it about him.

Or all the times he didn't feel loved enough by everyone at the club just to sign an improved contract days later.

Now there's this thing where he's mad at Isco because he said that we were coping well with the loss of Ronaldo in some interview.

I know he's under the microscope by being the great player he is, but he doesn't make it easy for himself. I won't close my eyes for that just because he's a legend for us. But hey, nobody's perfect, I think he's just a very emotional guy and he shows it.

Does it matter what his whole camp says about the award if Modric himself said he got a personal communication from Cristiano and he told him he deserved it and he wanted to see him soon? Anything else is interpretation and guessing based on a look or a perceived "smirk" or he didn't run fast enough to go hug a fellow player during celebrations. Or that he didn't show up at the ceremony.

Even the Isco comment about Ronaldo was ultimately complimentary and respectful. Who said Ronaldo is mad? Tabloids?

Contract disputes and switching teams is business. How that was handled good or bad doesn't mean he was or is a bad team mate day to day and should be branded with that when theres almost no actual team mate that will say he was. And on the contrary most any comments any of his teammates ever publicly say are good, or professional. Not arguing that hes a saint or doesn't get petulant or childish on the pitch. Or that he handles himself perfectly in all comments and interviews he makes.

You rightly and justifiably pointed out comments that should be called out. I just see all the time everywhere from detractors that he is like some terrible teammate but no one really has much to back that up and we cant say the man hasn't had plenty of coaches and teammates internationally and in 3 major leagues now that would let us know.

Didn't mean for this to be so off topic in the thread I just see it all the time that hes a bad team mate and I find it weird that its so easily accepted when we honestly don't have first hand backing of that from almost anyone

Don't shame Cronaldo for being Cronaldo. If I was a greasy, self serving, narcissistic twunt then I wouldn't have bothered to show up either.

Actually I think he said Kovacevic instead Kovacic

Depends on how much you believe Florentino's lobbyists affect this awards

Come now, he was talking about fitness. Fitness, man! :D

Or all the times he didn't feel loved enough by everyone at the club just to sign an improved contract days later.
He was tristiano in the fall of 2012 and ww gave him the new contract a year later. Then he wanted a new contract 6 months after signing the last one and left a year later in anger when we wouldn't budge. In 9 years the contract has been an issue only twice. He's been a great professional throughout and the problems have been few and far between, they just got magnified, dissected and discussed to death for overly long times because who he is and who we are

Ronaldo would have won it.

He lost several advantages by leaving Madrid. Now he's like anyone else when it comes to awards.

So.. future Ballon d'Or winner is unable to inspire this Real Madrid side? Just gone 6 hours without scoring. Some creativity wouldn't go amiss from him.
