This is a ranking of our squad based on positions. The most important is the preferred starter, but I'll also consider depth.
1. Goalkeeper - De Gea, Romero, Grant
World class number one, one of the best back ups and an experienced third choice. Also two exciting prospects in Pereira and Henderson
2. Attacking midfield - Pogba, Fellaini, (Fred)
Pogba is world class and Fellaini offer something different. Think Fred is supposed to be a box to box midfielder, but he might be a better fit further forward with his high risk style.
3. Striker - Rashford, Lukaku
Rashford looks like the real deal, and Lukaku is a proven goalscorer. Greenwood will hopefully give these two competition in two-three years.
4. Left wing - Martial, Sanchez
I rate Martial about the same as Rashford, but because Lukaku has shown more than Sanchez they come fourth. Can be pushed by Gomes and Chong in the coming years.
5. Centre Back - Lindelöf, Bailly, Rojo
Lindelöf has been really good this season, and I still have hopes that Bailly will come good. Although these three are very different in style, I have put them together because I think they all fit the same type of partner, someone that's good in the air, and who can step forward from defence, so that these guys can sweep up behind.
6. Box to box - Herrera, Fred, (Fellaini)
Herrera is a good player, and this role has been extremely difficult this year, with Matic's decline. Compared to the best in the world in this role though, we migmight need a bit more attacking/playmaking ability from this position. Fred has struggled this season, but might get better. Fellaini is a bad fit for this role, espesially next to Pogba and Matic.
7. Left back - Shaw, (Young), (Dalot)
I consider Shaw in the same category as Herrera, as someone who's good enough as a cog in a great team, but not by himself a great player. The back-ups are all better on the right.
8. Right wing - Lingard, Mata
Much like Shaw and Herrera, Lingard can function besides more talented players. Both him and Mata are better as number tens. A position we need to upgrade.
9. Right back - Young, Valencia, Dalot
Two players who seems to be close to finished, and a young player who doesn't seem ready to start yet. Valencia needs to go, and it also be to late for Young to be a starter next season.
10. Centre Back - Smalling, Jones
Supposed to be our commanding centre backs, but both have glaring weaknesses. We should get rid of Jones and keep Smalling as back-up. A priority position for the summer.
11. Defensive midfield - Matic, Pereira
Matic can still be good in periods of games, as we have seen recently, but espesially at the end of games, everyone can see that he's finished. I also struggle to see a future United-player in Pereira. This position should be first priority to improve. Can see Matic as a very good sub to put on to control at the end of games next season.
