This is a ranking of our squad based on positions. The most important is the preferred starter, but I'll also consider depth.

1. Goalkeeper - De Gea, Romero, Grant
World class number one, one of the best back ups and an experienced third choice. Also two exciting prospects in Pereira and Henderson

2. Attacking midfield - Pogba, Fellaini, (Fred)
Pogba is world class and Fellaini offer something different. Think Fred is supposed to be a box to box midfielder, but he might be a better fit further forward with his high risk style.

3. Striker - Rashford, Lukaku
Rashford looks like the real deal, and Lukaku is a proven goalscorer. Greenwood will hopefully give these two competition in two-three years.

4. Left wing - Martial, Sanchez
I rate Martial about the same as Rashford, but because Lukaku has shown more than Sanchez they come fourth. Can be pushed by Gomes and Chong in the coming years.

5. Centre Back - Lindelöf, Bailly, Rojo
Lindelöf has been really good this season, and I still have hopes that Bailly will come good. Although these three are very different in style, I have put them together because I think they all fit the same type of partner, someone that's good in the air, and who can step forward from defence, so that these guys can sweep up behind.

6. Box to box - Herrera, Fred, (Fellaini)
Herrera is a good player, and this role has been extremely difficult this year, with Matic's decline. Compared to the best in the world in this role though, we migmight need a bit more attacking/playmaking ability from this position. Fred has struggled this season, but might get better. Fellaini is a bad fit for this role, espesially next to Pogba and Matic.

7. Left back - Shaw, (Young), (Dalot)
I consider Shaw in the same category as Herrera, as someone who's good enough as a cog in a great team, but not by himself a great player. The back-ups are all better on the right.

8. Right wing - Lingard, Mata
Much like Shaw and Herrera, Lingard can function besides more talented players. Both him and Mata are better as number tens. A position we need to upgrade.

9. Right back - Young, Valencia, Dalot
Two players who seems to be close to finished, and a young player who doesn't seem ready to start yet. Valencia needs to go, and it also be to late for Young to be a starter next season.

10. Centre Back - Smalling, Jones
Supposed to be our commanding centre backs, but both have glaring weaknesses. We should get rid of Jones and keep Smalling as back-up. A priority position for the summer.

11. Defensive midfield - Matic, Pereira
Matic can still be good in periods of games, as we have seen recently, but espesially at the end of games, everyone can see that he's finished. I also struggle to see a future United-player in Pereira. This position should be first priority to improve. Can see Matic as a very good sub to put on to control at the end of games next season.

1. GK
2. CM
3. LW
4. ST
5. LB
6. CB
7. RW
8. RB

I still have hope Dalot can step up though between now and next season, cause I'd much rather we spunk our budget on a RW and a CB.

Striker should be second.

People forget that Lukaku would walk into 14 teams in this league (and maybe Chelsea's too)... And considering he's our second choice, nobody has better depth then that

would agree with OP largely though Smalling and Rojo should swap places

8, 9, 10 and 11 should be our transfer priorities

personally I'd like to see us change our attack somewhat and potentially sell Lukaku and bring in a top RW and a more skilful attacker/striker- May be a Dybala style player

RW, CB, RB and DCM are the key issues though

GK, never better.

Defense, dogshite.

Midfield, good starters,awful depth.

Attack, 2 great talents ccompanied with 2 over the hill players, a nothing player that runs a lot and a useless lump with no touch.

Attack and defense need several signings. Mata can stay as a backup as he's happy with that but Sanchez and Lukaku needs to be thrown out and replaced by good squad options while Lingard should drop to a squad option while getting a right winger.

Defense needs a major overhaul. Only Smalling and Lindelof are good enough going forward. Jones, Rojo and Bailly needs to be thrown out and replaced. Valencia and Darmian need to be replaced. Shaw will need to be upgraded on if we have higher ambition, not bad but not great also. Young can stay as a backup as he doesn't complain as Mata.

As for the midfield we will need a replacement for Matic but I think this can wait for at least 1 year. At the moment Fellaini looks set to leave in summer and Fred isn't convincing, while Periera doesn't look like to be United quality. We'll need to replace them with squad options but this isn't urging issues.

Thr urging issues currently is to rebuild the defense and offload the deadwood in the attack. Can't see this happening in one summer so we'll have to put a plan on for the upcoming 2 summers to sell and replace the duds. For the next summer I think we need to offload Fellaini, Lukaku, Velencia, Darmian, Jones and Sanchez while getting a right back, a right winger, a center back and striker. The summer after it offload Fred, Periera, Rojo and Bailly while signing one more center back, a left back and 2 midfielders to drop Matic to a squad option.

By this, 2 years from now we should be looking at something like :

GK, De Gea and whoever still here, not that I care as long as Dave is staying.

Defense, 2 new CBs + Smalling and Lindelof.

Fullbacks, Dalot, Shaw and 2 new fullbacks + the eternal Young I guess.

Midfield, Pogba, Herrera, Matic and 2 new midfielders.

Attack : Rashford, Martial, right winger, new striker, Mata as a backup for cup games and our local lad Lingard.

By good planning we can have a beast of a team by this time. The likes of Rash Martial and Pogba should be be hitting their prime as well.

I analyzed your post 5 minutes.. So please tell me, Mike and Phil are talent or good? And who is trash?

GK is strong. Attack and midfield need tweaks but nothing major.
Defence needs some work .

We need CB, RB, RF/RW , DM cover, LB cover to complete the squad but of thse positions only 2 are holding us back from competing with City/Liverpool as it stands. CB and RF/RW.

 I probably should have done the same before writing that down. However I thought it was obvious who I ment though.

Young-Smalling-Lindelof-Shaw
Herrera-Matic-Pogba
Lingard-Rashford-Martial

Valencia-Bailly-Jones-Dalot
Fred-Fellaini-McTominay
Mata-Lukaku-Sanchez

You can see it very clear when you look at it how I wrote it, what we have is a good squad with potential but it is also certainly unbalanced with regards to our best 11. Our best players are the younger guys. Their supposed leaders are largely not good enough and that has been a problem no matter the position. The important thing is that we have good foundations now with the young players, it is something to build on but the positions you have to look at to strengthen is fullbacks first and foremost as well as midfield and centre backs. It is nothing new though, we all know this.
