Television Game of Thrones (TV) • The watch has ended

My thoughts on the last ep:

An average ep to end an average season.

Jon went from The Invincible to Wenger Out in the space of an ad break. All he had to say was "she went somewhere with the dragon, she'll be back. I'm the Captain now".

Dany, all powerful woman, dies because she loves the dick too much ffs. They made such a big deal about Jon being her biggest threat, yet she drops her guard so quickly.

Sansa is a cnut.

Arya will get spin off. Funny when she says "I know a killer when I see one" towards Dany. Yes, we all just saw her destroy a city

And the 3-eyed raver is king hahaha. Every other Kingdom will be sharpening their knives. Bran the broken will know they're about to attack but say feck all to his men. Once they're all destroyed, he'll say "I knew that was gonna happen". fecking Captain Hindsight.
:lol::lol::lol:

So what? Those could easily have been the main plotlines for 3 full series. We could have had plenty of side plots like we've always had in GoT to fill the rest of the time, whilst leaving plenty of time to properly set up hugely important events.

For example in S8 we could have had the fight against the White Walkers as they ravage the North, but at the same time we have Cersei consolidating her position in Westeros and seen gaining support, trying to build anti-dragon weapons, some of the Golden Company doing their thing etc. There's plenty the show writers could have done to fill the time, and whilst undeniably there would have been filler I'd prefer that over everything being incredibly rushed. It's definitely not a stupid idea.

I think the only change I'd make is to S10. Jon should always kill Daenerys immediately after she destroys Kings Landing, that decision makes sense for him because it's a crazy decision and he couldn't ignore it. What we could have had a season of is showing the aftermath of Dany's death and Westeros scrambling to sort itself out, the battles to stop a crazed Unsullied/Dothraki army led by Greyworm thirsty for revenge, that kind of thing. Far better than skipping to some weird, unrealistic council scenes where everyone just shrugs and agrees to appoint Bran as King.

We got many seasons in GoT out of big events like the War of the Five Kings, with other smaller plotlines filling the rest of the time, and scenes like Tywin/Arya for quality character development. Entire conflicts never ended in the space of an episode or two, there were lots of episodes where the enemy were on their way and the other side had to plan and talk, and these were still very enjoyable. Heck, we started off S8 in this vein, the only issue was D&D seemingly didn't realise they were running out of time.
He's saying Seasons 7 & 8 for the Night King plot. Maybe it's because I've still got The Walking Dead on my mind but after two seasons of the battle with a certain bad guy it felt way too contrived. Besides, if the war against the Army of the Dead lasts two whole seasons then there's only one outcome there and that's The Night King wins. Even if Jon defeats him there's going to be no one left at that point.

Personally I would have preferred Season 7 to stay the mess it was, Season 8 is the Night King and Season 9 being Cersei/Dany conquest. Tens a nice number but I can't see what would fit into it.

Bran turns into an evil mad king who breaks everyone's legs after hearing Bran the Broken one too many times?

Aye, I don't think you need that much time for the Night King either. Granted they walked around and didn't really do much for 5 Seasons, but that seems to have been more because they were trying to build up an army slowly and finding it difficult to find the Wildlings rather than the Night King being slow at marching.

The obvious objective is to take Kings Landing. Win that and they win the war. But to do that they'd need to fight through the North and then head past the Twins and march on Kings Landing. Ultimately that should be a maximum of 2 battles (Winterfell and Kings Landing) and a possible fake out at Twins. 10 episodes would sort that don't think you'd need 2 whole seasons, the build up would be too long.

Doesn't the three eyed raven live for a bunch of centuries? How long was the previous one in that tree? And isn't Brann supposed to "create" a successor? Or with the death of the NK all that went out the window?

I would have preferred the Kings Landing / game of thrones stuff to have come first, then an absolute bloodbath of a battle with the NK to round the series off.

The more I think about it the more I feel they underplayed the NK a bit in the end.

It’s because really the NK is a boring character. He can’t speak. He doesn’t offer any personality.

They needed to get past him.

They needed to improve him. I have never been as disappointed by a villain as I was with him. All that hype, and he turned out to be your typical CGI bad guy. What a waste.

He was boring because they made him boring. If he had been linked back to the Starks or Targaeryans somewhow and they wrote a cohesive backstory it would have been fascinating and raised the stakes even more. Missed a golden opportunity on that front because they simply didn't give a shit.

Create your own head canon. In mine his mother is Jon Snow who was inseminated by a time travelling Bran back when he was in that cave with Ygritte.

 Still somehow makes more sense than the council scenes in the final episode.

True, I think that's the biggest sticking point. Two whole seasons of the war would have been a bit of a stretch, but I think an entire season would have been reasonable.

Obviously during that time not all the focus had to be on the army of the dead, we could have switched to minor characters suffering from the repercussions of that, Cersei consolidating her power while everyone is trying to save the world etc etc. Basically what the human characters are doing in response to the apocalyptic event which is impacting their lives.

That's what GoT has always been about for me. The dragons and zombies are fun and all, and make for some cool set pieces, but all my favourites scenes are mostly people talking. A couple of set pieces might enter my top five (Battle of the Bastards, Hardhome) but Tywin and Arya talking in Harrenhal, Tyrion's trial and Tyrion/Oberyn talking in his jailcell are my top three favourite game of thrones scenes.

If I had a choice between what we got (the war lasting 3 episodes, with 2/3 of that being filler!) and it being stretched in to two seasons, I choose the latter every time. Personally the war against the dead was never as interesting to me as the war for the throne, but it would still have been nice to really explore the white walkers and the way other Houses reacted to the threat of the dead, but we just didn't get that.

What I am interested in is the prequels, and whether they'll potentially feature the white walkers and maybe give us some backstory. Haven't really done much research on what they'll all be about though.

Rest of Westerosi nobility upon hearing Bran has been made King: 'Fecking who?'

Rest of Westerosi nobility upon hearing his nickname: 'he's called fecking WHAT?'

The issue of having more seasons for GoT would be that the plot armor problem would be ten times worse.

Either that or you somehow have a final season with about three major characters left.

I do like how everybody is coming up with options / alternatives, but the same problems, nobody is agreeing or finding issues with whats been proposed.

I think most do agree that it needed more time, however. Defo one more season at least.

Emilia Clarke sure suffered in making this final season

The Night King spent 8 seasons being built up. He looked menacing and is one of the focal points of the show. He managed to kill only Theon. What a massive threat he was.

They should have had Dany make everyone stand aside and let the dead March on King's Landing. Then have the battle with the Night King.
It would have shown her losing it a bit, while still being justifiable as a tactic, for her to appear as as hero, saving the city.

 What?

Does she just walk up to the Night King and say "heeeey, so I know there's like 100,000 people in Winterfell but whaddaya say you skip on past us and go down to King's Landing and wipe out our enemies instead?"

I never thought it possible but some of these alternative endings are actually worse than the real thing.

Basically that is what they should have done.

The main characters from the first seasons (Ned/Jeffery/king robert/his brother/Tedd stark/etc) are all dead

You have to introduce new ones

Yeah. I meant stand at the roadside waving.:p

They did this with Euron and the Sand Snakes and they were absolutely terrible. If the Dorne and Iron Islands plots hadn’t been so unpopular (and badly written) maybe you could’ve got a few more decent seasons out of the show but having only a few remaining plots and characters, you’d have to really drag them out to make the 9-10 seasons worthwhile.
