Oh i've definitely been critical of him. He could do way more for his overall game, but he's very much a box player who does, as you say, player much better with Rashford.

VAR reviewed Son's red card when Gomes broke his leg and said it was a red card. Spurs appealed and the ban was overturned. Very different circumstances as it's the other way around.

No one is writing him off but he has done about nothing today. He should do a lot more that's we're just thinking.

He's actually been pretty decent on the ball, just hasn't been able to see enough of it. It's his 2nd game in a completely new country, with a different set of team mates - some of whom aren't good enough, the others won't have figured out how he plays yet and what positions he takes up. He's the last person anyone should be even mildly critical about.

Martial just isn't good at the basics of hold up play, attitude, pressing, and hunger to win the ball back. Stuff that the top teams (and many others) excel at. Occasional brilliance at a club that want consistent excellence is not good enough.

Winning the ball back isnt the striker his job. His hold up is usually fine. Rashford made good use of it for example. He isnt pressing and chasing every ball but he does try to block passing lanes.

Martial is a good player but not good enough to carry a team. If this team will get better i am sure that Martial will look (even) better. This team has a lot of issues that need to be sorted out before replacing Martial. Martial just is hated (yes hated, people here use the word hate for him) despite being much better and much more useful than James for example.
