SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

Sadly, the most likely scenario seems to be that it is gonna be a new endemic cold (with a much higher death rate than the coronavirus human colds, or human flu). If this happens, and with the vaccines being estimated to become available 12-18 months from now, I wonder how humanity will cope. Crash the economy, work from home when possible, cancel all mass events, or just continue with the life and hope that everything is gonna be alright.
 
The negative impact it is having is now out of control. Everyone involved from the ground level is going to be negatively impacted in some way. The rate at which this has taken hold is what really shocks me. I didn’t think it would go this badly wrong so soon.

I have to wonder what people expected though. Something like this was always going to happen. Now it is going to cost millions to properly terminate and you wonder if the higher ups have the fortitude to do what needs to be done. Especially in the early stages.

We have five confirmed cases in Poland but there’ll be dozens more once people start returning for Easter holidays. We have so many emigrants in the infected areas that it is bound to get out of control.

I fear the impact on health system will probably be more significant than the amount of lives it’s going to take directly. We have already seen the only ER in the area closed because there had been a patient with suspected coronavirus inside, if you had happened to have heart attack during that window (which was about 3-4 hours) then tough luck you are dead. Masks and hand sanitizers are either completely out of stock or price 400% higher than before the outbreak. Those small things are going to matter
 
There is a weird trend of people being happy that this virus is mainly killing older/weaker people. Losing anyone is a tragedy in itself and death is the most sure thing in this life but still, I can never feel relieved about this category of people being the weakest to fight the virus.

I have not been outside yet this morning but it looks like not much has changed other than we are not allowed to leave the region.

The UK seems to be keeping a lid on it but the pace of the rise in cases in Germany and France matches what Italy went through about a week ago, possibly even faster, and they haven't even attempted to stop it.

I think by the time it reaches this level in the UK there will be no point in quarantine as it will be everywhere.

Maybe Germany will do similar, it's only happened in Italy because it's coming from mainly in one area.

What has everyone's workplaces done so far?

We've had hand gel left all over the place on every floor and comms sent out reminding people to wash hands etc. We've trialled large teams all working from home at the same time, to see what problems we face. That's about it so far.

I'm due down in London for 3 days next week too. I wasnt worried about it at first but I'm becoming a bit concerned about going now. Though im not sure if im just getting caught up in the ramped up hysteria...

Reading Twitter responses on this topic I'm staying to suspect that there's a whole lot of people that can't understand percentages and missed the cognitive development to project future states.

Coincidentally a lot of these seem to be brexiteers

Yeah, this has left me frustrated. Not least because I’m in the ‘vulnerable, pre-existing condition’ category.

People are treating it as if it’s just collateral damage. Some look at the reported death rate and shrug their shoulders, without acknowledging the bigger picture.

Right now it seems that Germany is waiting until it's too late. We are coming close to 1000 (probably surpassing that today) and people are still like "it's just a flu".

It's easy for some people to excuse potential deaths if it's involving people they don't know. To be honest the media make it easy for others to be cold because these incidents are always reported as if the people are just a statistic. There's a lot of kids where I work that will be in a lot of danger if it spreads through here which is why my workplace are in full blown prevent mode. Keyboards, door handles, lift buttons, etc cleaned twice a day. Touchscreens have wipes beside them. The first sign of it becoming an issue they're not waiting for the order from higher powers - they're just shutting the place down and sending everyone home.

Yes you have some valid points and genuine concerns, but at the same time you are the far extreme to the likes of those saying do nothing and it's not a real problem.

I think somewhere in the middle is the most sensible and logical answer.

I live 1/2 a mile from the schools where there have been two confirmed cases. That was last week. The student who came back from Italy spent an entire week at school before he showed symptoms and went to goodness knows how many other public places. But there have been NO MORE confirmed cases since last week. The teacher was at school for over a week too and again, no more confirmed cases.

It could very well be that we may see many more in the next few weeks and months, but the point is two people have been confirmed in a very small area and nobody else has symptoms despite both confirmed cases having contact with thousands of people.

Yes we need to be cautious and yes
everyone should be vigilant and yes contingency plans need to be made and ready to implement, but fear mongering and over the top measures are definitely not the way to go.

As I said, the priority is we, the public, need a consistent, honest and 100% accurate update on the virus. We need to know everything and also need to know the plans in place for coping with the epidemic and what happens after. I also think the media should be used to give information and advice and not spread fear and widespread panic as it has been.

feck all apart from a global message on washing hands. Self isolation is also mandatory if you have similar symptoms or recently visited one of the hotspots (though shockingly I don't think they've updated the list to include Italy yet)

We're a 24/7 manufacturing site though, so the biggest portion of the workforce need to be in for things to happen. Even the engineers (like myself) can't really function if we're not there - even if our jobs are technically desk based.

The Boris message of hand washing falls apart as it’s not expanded to;

“Wash your hands. Every single time you touch anything, before touching anything else”

Which is obviously impossible for anyone not just sat on their ass in the House of Commons.

Nope. Although - I've shared information directly from those who were in China when this broke out. In fact, if you go back and read some of my posts, I spoke about how my colleagues parents are in Shanghai and how the situation has been quite calm since the lock down.

Although almost impossible, if the entirety of the UK took upon the advice, then the spread could easily be controlled - sneeze/cough into a tissue, isolate at the first sign of a fever, keep your hands away from your face etc. Most of my office of around 200-300 seem to be taking this seriously. We've sanitiser installed around the the place and I see more people washing their hands more thoroughly and longer.

I agree, its a difficult conversation to have with family when a loved one gets ill. With older people, there is superadded difficulty in treating sepsis if there is delirium in the picture which often involves depriving liberty to treat which puts an enormous strain on families. Haven't even come to the difficult conversations of resuscitation and ceiling of care.

What I can say though is there is general advice regarding this virus making immunocompromised and frail/elderly/patients with comorbidities more ill is based on calming general population. We have to triage appropriately. The panic buying is one thing but there are people actively going to GP practices as they are worried about the symptoms in addition to ignoring 111 advice because they want "treatment" and aren't happy with the conservative management approach due to paranoia. So from a public messaging point of view, pointing out that most people will be fine isn't to callously disregard those that won't be but to offer perspective so that we can make appropriate use of resources.

I think it's helplessness, and preparation, as much as callousness. Parents are being advised that it's less hazardous to their kids than to their parents/grandparents. Working age adults are being told that work might need to be organised differently, but that it continues.

Those concepts do prepare people for behavioural changes, though some of those changes are going to be hard to take and may have other consequences. Do you still go and see family in care homes? Do you still rely on the grandparents as child minders? Hopefully, people will also themselves the question - should I go to work or the gym or the match, even though I've got a bit of a "probably nothing" cough.

For the oldies, the question it asks us, is are we going to stay in our own houses and avoid other people for the next week, month, year? If not then what gambles are we willing to take? Family visits? Holidays? Trips to the shops or the library or the "socially prescribed" coffee morning chat group or health walk?

We need to hear it before we prepare ourselves to handle it. Some behavioural changes have a huge impact on us emotionally and psychologically as well as physically and economically. My first big decision this week is do I go and watch the derby today and even that's a tough choice.
 
I've noticed that the YouTube videos of that doctor regularly get posted here but apparently he's wrong on certain stuff. There are no 2 strains as of today.
 
This is problem here in a nutshell.

Here in a ni an amateur footballer was tested. The results take a few days. In the meantime he played for his local football team in an away match. They travel by car with 3 other people. After the game he stays in the clubhouse and has a few drinks, there is a darts competition so its quite full.

That night the go to one of the biggest abd busiests nightclubs in the country (Kelly's portrush).

The results come back and he is positive... how many people has he infected since his test?

We dont need to mass panic but for feck sake self quarantine if you might have it.

Hes a young fit lad and will likely be perfectly fine but he could easily be responsible for the deaths of elderly people who will come in contact with unknown transmitters because of his selfishness.

People like that should be charged the same way people with known stds still have unprotected sex.

I think for all of us, we have to think if something/somewhere we might normally have gone to can be missed out. Yes, it can get boring staying at home, but it's not the end of the world. It's not as if we don't have TV/internet/books/games etc.

That’s a danger in itself. it’s ruined game of thrones for me. In my self isolation I started reading the books. Dany is 13 in the books! She is a hugely attractive adult woman in the series. Totally ruined it for me.

On the epidemic preparedness index Italy are 35/195 of countries with a score of 56/100. The UK is 2/195 with 77.9/100. Italy is more comparable with Eastern European states than even other Southern European states apart from Greece which they are one place lower than. They’re not really comparable to Western European nations according to the index in having the infrastructure to cope. South Korea would be more useful to look at as they’re in the highest bracket of preparedness at 9/195 and a score of 70.
