SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

I'm terrified now. It really seems like nobody has any exit strategy here. If we loosen up on the lockdowns, it will come back. Only vaccine can save us.

Fair enough mate. Just thought in an off-chance you might have found that helpful. Did you decide to come home or?
Still talking to her about it here.
I can get that London flight although I don't fancy the idea of being stuck in an economy seat for 13 hours straight.

Oh, FFS:

I'm not self-employed so this doesn't affect me but, after seeing numerous tweets from self-employed people who are losing their crucial income, I can't help but be angry at the 'socialist hero' Chancellor. 'Making more money than usual' indeed...

Not a future great PM after all. Who'd a thunk?

Containment is the only way. Get the confirmed number of infections down to a manageable level, then do mass testing to find and trace as many of the infected as possible. Then it's a constant game of tightening and loosening restrictions to keep this thing in control without having to shut off society. In that time, increase your health care capacity (beds, ventilators, etc) and hope an antiviral comes into play - which is more likely than a vaccine. An antiviral would be an immediate game changer because it can increase your capacity to treat people by 10 - 100x.

Every day is another day in advancement and preparation. A vaccine might be a long way off, but treatment for symptoms could be on its way before that.

The idea is to get it down to manageable levels and then keep everyone monitored.

A country like China has had zero to 4 new locally transmitted cases a day recently, in a country of 2 billion.

The world will be very different after this, but slowly, we are getting more and more prepared to fight it.

It's unhealthy in that endurance athletes have an increased risk of upper respiratory tract infections. That's not "nothing whatsoever."

@FeneR, actually the studies show that an athlete “can” be at an increased risk during periods of heavy intense training and a couple of weeks after a race only.
They also show that moderate activity may enhance immune function.

So, being a marathon runner absolutely is healthy, or can be, depending on the individual runner and their current training. Whereas you made out it’s anything but which was way too wishy washy with the facts.

I think he's actually right to some extent. Some self employed people are going to be making hay because the sun is shining incredibly brightly right now.

You could allow people to apply on the caveat that if they bring in a certain amount between two dates they are liable to pay it back by a certain date but how do you police that? People will use all sorts of accounting wizardry to ensure their accounts are beneficial to them when the time comes to evaluate if they should pay it back or not.

Just go check a few more sources please before you start posting fake news
Where did the 2009 H1N1 flu virus come from?
The 2009 H1N1 influenza virus (referred to as “swine flu” early on) was first detected in people in the United States in April 2009. This virus was originally referred to as “swine flu” because laboratory testing showed that its gene segments were similar to influenza viruses that were most recently identified in and known to circulate among pigs. CDC believes that this virus resulted from reassortment, a process through which two or more influenza viruses can swap genetic information by infecting a single human or animal host. When reassortment does occur, the virus that emerges will have some gene segments from each of the infecting parent viruses and may have different characteristics than either of the parental viruses, just as children may exhibit unique characteristics that are like both of their parents. In this case, the reassortment appears most likely to have occurred between influenza viruses circulating in North American pig herds and among Eurasian pig herds. Reassortment of influenza viruses can result in abrupt, major changes in influenza viruses, also known as “antigenic shift.” When shift happens, most people have little or no protection against the new influenza virus that results.

but yeah cool let's ban china from the world ?

Yes, it's not a simple process. If you want to be quick and offer a flat fee, then there is the risk of undercooking the numbers for some self employed workers. Self employment 18 months ago might have very different accounts to now.

And why does it matter if some lose out on a flat fee?

The key is moderation. Too much or too little is bad for you. How do you know what is too much or too little is difficult.

I remember seeing a video talking about the cyclists in the tour de france and the commentator said that by the time they are finished, they have the bodies of old people in their eighties, given what they have to go through.

So is it only the Swedish in Europe left following a very different path, or are they thinking again?

Same path really just people seem confused about it and think everyone is doing it differently, not really understanding that each country is different and is on a different timeline with the spread.

Sweden has passed new laws to shut down when the time is right, that time is not yet.

Italy were too late, possibly France and Spain too. Sweden are still early doors and are following the scientific advice rather than giving in to public pressure. We have currently brought in the military to build a massive field hospital at the Stockholm exhibition centre.

When we close in on critical numbers for the health services, we’ll lockdown, just as others have.

Denmark & Norway went early with much stricter distancing so we’ll see over the next weeks if that had any effect.

Tbf, I'd say it would be quite hard to come up with an exact exit plan before you see how the virus plays out in a given country. Everywhere will be a bit different.

Once it's under some sort of control and if there's sufficient testing & contact tracing then it should be possible to model a way out, I'd have thought. Whether that's by gradually lifting different measures, relaxing restrictions in different cities at a time or whatever.

So my brother returned to Shanghai a few day’s ago and is being held in a government hotel quarantined for 14 days. Upon arrival they are checking everyone’s temperature multiple times over a period of time. My brother showed no signs of a fever so he passed by doing the actual test.

So now he is locked in a hotel room for 14 days. This is for everyone entering China, it is impossible to skip this. Someone just got deported for trying to skip out before 14 days. Upon completion of quarantine people are given an Id number and a green card linked to their WeChat and phone numbers marking them as being cleared from quarantine. Cities will be starting to open up over the next weeks. To enter any building the green card and your id must be presented.

Not sure how it works for people already in China as he didn’t mention it. But I assume the must do something to also receive the green code.

Yeah we just need to have the phone code thing on Alipay or Wechat and present it when entering places. Shanghai is starting to get quite a lot of back flow cases, so unfortunately these measures seem a bit necessary for now.

Don't they get an average of the last so many months?
I think as it stands it is just SSP £94 or whatever it is . My wife is a carer , does ridiculous long hours but has been advised not to work as she suffers with asthma and has been told she will get £94 per week . Works for abacare , shite.

India on full lockdown for 3 weeks. Should have done this a week ago, better late than never though.

The maximum is 2400 a month anyway no matter what you earn.

Didn't know that. I am not affected by this yet financially, was just being hypothetical. So I suppose those with mortgages more than that are getting relief from payments, for example? I still don't know what the best they can do is.

I think you're a bit too soon for exit strategies. Wuhan doesn't start coming out of lockdown till April 8th. We're at least a few months away from even considering something of an exit strategy.
