Consider the context in this case. When Man. City started going after him, Valencia were in dire need of money and looking to offload players to make up for it. City went in and got him on that basis. Other teams don't necessarily need a talented yet unproven winger, and we probably weren't going to pursue him once City came in (Ferran would have rejected us anyways to play under Pep).
Am I the only one who thinks it's a bit rich of Benfica to be indignant about false stories linking them to players? Seems strangely familiar...

I remember when he was the subject of much hype coming through at Ajax, although I never got it - he was a centre half built like a school girl. Imagine him having a £900k clause in his contract. There was a point Ajax could have fleeced someone for much, much more.

You always have to consider the context in different situations; there are no absolutes when it comes to football transfers. Technically, I can name tons of English players, but you probably wouldn't find them useful for United. Daniel James is one of them (British, not English, but still relevant), and people aren't giving him a chance. Ferran Torres also won't be starting for City anytime soon; he's nowhere near any of Mahrez, Sterling, or Bernardo Silva in terms of productivity and consistency.

That is true, but only really for the last 3/4years when Rashford was the first to break through and a few have followed. There hadnt really been any good ones before that for quite a while really considering our history of youth

NO, I think he is a very good player, can play out wide or up front big, strong, fast, works hard, good in the air, good technique, decent finisher.......despite all that though, they paid a fortune for him and I cant imagine him being sold for less than £65-70m and tough I really rate him, that is just too much
Totally agree on Richarlison, very good player who is strong in all areas pretty much but not a £70m player.
Eriksen I disagree on though personally, 28maybe he has actually peaked and I know will get slaughtered as he is of course a good player, but for me, I always thought he was massively over rated being mentioned as one of the premiership greats often. For me he was a clever technical player but definately not a stellar player for the premiership, would never have signed him personally and certainly not now.
We are the perfect move for him in my opinion and he is also the perfect signing for us. £50m odd I genuinely think would be looked on as a steal in a few years time. I really really want us to sign Sancho AND Grealish but I think Camavinga is the one player I would sign instead of Grealish if it comes down to it, we are woefully short with just Matic there at the moment
Dont buy it myself. Dortmund have always been more negotiable than Bayern, that is a Bayern type of stance. I dont think we will get much of a reduction though, maybe down to £97-100m, I think the deadline is important for us with such a small break before the season starts to get it done anyway

I like Eriksen and think he was great for Tottenham in general. I was just trying to think of a “smarter” transfer than Grealish.
I know it will probably end up as 50 with add ons on top, but if we could pick up someone with enough talent to step in and cover for less, we could focus on other areas, and just as importantly, let go of more players that don’t contribute.
If Villa stick in and around 80 million, we should be prepared to move on and not mess around.
Agree with the orignal poster about costs of English players and regardless of the context, other sides are doing great deals price wise with bargains, we havent for a long time, Daniel James is just another example of one of our bargain signings that simply isnt very good, he wont be a top player for me at all.
Totally agree on Torres though, may be a great deal for CIty, but Sane I think is better and Torres will struggle to get games even though very talented as the other wingers are all of a very high quality.....reminds me a bit of when they signed Jesus Navas who was a very good winger but couldnt get enough games and for me he was a better player than Torres and the other wingers werent as good as they are now, not sure its actually a good move for him.
Even without the clause and corona, he is probably the most wanted keeper in the world. When you look at the fees paid for top keepers in or league, no way he would go for less than £75-80m anyway. Like Romano but its almost a nothing story, of course they wont want to sell him and of course it will take a massive fee to do so
