Plenty of American racists did not repeat their behaviour between 2008-16 when there was a black president only to resurrect those attitudes when they were endorsed by the next one. It's not enough to say you'll never do it again because it doesn' t mean you've shed those values.

I've posted what she said from the NYT article. It's not enough. She gives a cursory "sorry" and then deflects by stating there are people and causes she cares about that this is overshadowing. If you've truly changed it shouldn't be a problem to say that you recognize how hurtful those comments are to those communities. There are no excuses for them, of course we all understand that you say dumb shit when you're young but when you grow you recognize why the things you said or did were wrong and own them you don't just give a hollow apology and deflect.

Lab grown meat doesn’t interest me at all, just doesn’t seem appealing. When meat gets banned, guess I’ll be eating more veggy kind of protein.

I don't know, I read her apology and I don't really know how much more comphrensive her apology is supposed to be. I frankly don't think anyone but herself and people who know her well would know how sincere she is and how sincere her apology is. She apologized about it 2 years ago as well. I can understand why it makes sense to be cynical about people who have made racist or homophobic remarks in the past, but I wouldn't lump all people who've done something like that together. I think it's pretty clear she's not a maga type as well. I think it's also pretty clear the reason this is biting her in the ass again is because of the recent attack on asian americans, but again her tweets were 10 years ago. I don't really think there is much more, I can say about this, I have never heard about her before untill this thread, so overall I simply wouldn't be able to jugde what she is really like as a person.

Why, though? If it looks like meat, smells like meat and tastes like meat, what difference does it make? It's basically just another GMO, which we've done for thousands of years, really.

I'm not saying I'd eat it now, but I am definitely looking forward to the day where those things are true.

Fair enough. Thanks for posting that, it's better that what the (apparently failing?) NYT reported. That said, I still think it's understandable that she was sacked.

I know your logic is right, just the thought of a slab of meat just growing on a table in some kind of lab seems weird to me.
 
The Dutch version of Monopoly (the board game) will be revised. Things like "you win the 2nd prize in a beauty contest and earn 100" perports the stereotype that being beautiful makes you superior and should be taken out of the game.

Some voices say the game should be banned alltogether because it celebrates extreme capitalism since the goal is to eliminate all others.

I guess it's fair enough that Teen Vouge magazine don't want to have staff who have negative connotations attached to them.

Replace Asian with Black in those tweets, and there's no way she escapes censure. Let's see, "stupid black TA" or "swollen Black lips" will get your ass cancelled, so why the double standards?

I agree with you, context is important and her role as EIC at Teen Vogue was not compatible with those racist views (especially given high Asian teen readership). It was a stupid role, advertisers paused ad spending and she was canned. Good riddance to Alexi, she'll find another job.

Because we don't really take racism against East Asians seriously.

I don't know what it's like in the US but I remember reading a book which stated East Asians are actually the most discriminated against minority here in the UK. This was only a few years ago but I'd be surprised if that's changed.

What’s the point of being a teenager in the first place if you can’t feckup and learn from it. If the magazine really knew its audience, and assuming she had learned from it, it’d have hired her to make exactly that point.

Well I would tend to agree that you if you don't believe that people can have a shift in attitude and learn from their mistakes especially teenagers, then what is the point of all of this in the first place? However I feel i've already said pretty much everything I feel about this case already. I'm not of the school of thought that there can be no redemption, forgiveness or change, but it obviously also depends on the severity of transgression.

We managed to allow approx 8.5 million registered members of the nazi party after WW2 to move on (more or less) so there’s a benchmark if you like. ( have I just Godwinned myself?)

Agreed, we don't take racism against East Asians seriously in the US either. I don't know why that is, but I've seen abuse/violence towards Asians grow dramatically in the last year, and it's concerning. Media/police have also been complicit in underreporting especially when attacks have been perpetrated by other minorities. There was a case of a Japanese jazz pianist who was violently attacked in Harlem last year as he was exiting the subway and jumped by a bunch of thugs who broke his collarbone and sent him to the hospital for a long time with injuries that fecked up his piano playing ability. NYPD didn't iniitally consider this a hate crime, and NY Times didn't pick this story up until it became too big to ignore.

Asian means coming from the continent of Asia though, not a skin colour, fairer to replace it with European.

When I did my international relations degree East Asia was basically everything East of the Asean countries, so China, Korea, Japan, Mongolia.
South was India, Sri Lanka etc.
No-one ever talks about West Asia- I guess technically it's the Middle East?

I think traditionally, Mongolia and the strip of Manchuria would be considered north as well

Ah, yes; Mongolia is quite unique because of its intermediate status, and upon closer inspection, the hastily labelled map does have a few short-comings — could definitely be considered a region of the North because of shared ancestry with the Yakuts and Buryats, Central-ish because of upland steppe and pastoral nomadic influences, Eastern according to the United Nations breakdown and a lot of contemporary effects. Was initially tempted to go with Inner Asia or High Asia or perhaps North-Central/Eastern Asia, but those term's meaning isn't exactly set in stone either, soo... :lol:
 
I'm just not used to seeing East/West Asian designation. Middle East and Sub-Continent always seem to be very different from SE Asia and East Asia.

Didn't Turkey used to be Asia Minor?
