What would be ownership of her actions be in this case? Apart from a sincere apology and resolving not to do it again, I don't really know what you can do to show that you have shifted your attitude if you don't repeat your behaviour.
Plenty of American racists did not repeat their behaviour between 2008-16 when there was a black president only to resurrect those attitudes when they were endorsed by the next one. It's not enough to say you'll never do it again because it doesn' t mean you've shed those values.
I've posted what she said from the NYT article. It's not enough. She gives a cursory "sorry" and then deflects by stating there are people and causes she cares about that this is overshadowing. If you've truly changed it shouldn't be a problem to say that you recognize how hurtful those comments are to those communities. There are no excuses for them, of course we all understand that you say dumb shit when you're young but when you grow you recognize why the things you said or did were wrong and own them you don't just give a hollow apology and deflect.
