Obviously you have to make changes because of fatigue but there wasn’t a player on the bench that I thought could change anything. Suddenly the squad depth looked dreadful tonight.

That's a bullshit excuse. There isn't anyone on that bench who could be worse than Rashford today. At worse they would be just as bad, so worth trying if anything to refresh the team and inject some energy.

It wasn’t about that. Fresh legs were needed. We had them pinned back but could see we were tiring and dropped off. Should have made a sub or two at 70 minutes and then push for the win the last 20.
Not run them into the ground for 100 minutes.

It isn't even that. With Ole it's either obsession or cowardice but he always leaves Rashford on however bad he's playing or injured he looks. Greenwood the first to be sacrificed cause he's more junior, even if he's playing better and looks more threatening.
He had Dan James, Mata and Amad on the bench if he wanted to change things up. He could have brought VDB on for Rashford too and moved Pogba at LW. He had options. they might not be the best but they're better than just leaving the same team for 100 mins. He's just a bit of coward and out of his depth.
He brought Fred on for Pogba and settled for heading to pens with a keeper that couldn't save a pen in 100 if his life depended on it.

Also as others have pointed out, 3/4 of those players I mentioned are his purchases. If they're so bad they can't be brought on as subs against Villarreal then the failure is still his for wasting money on shit players. There's literally no excuses for him on this.

Otherwise presumably much of your posting history is demonstrations of bewilderment every time a manager brings in on a sub, arguing that it cannot possibly make sense as the player coming on isn’t as good as the player coming off else the player coming on would have started in the first place.
Everyone needs to pause and consider that now we’re even pretending routine substitutions are baffling occurrences in football to defend his game management.
Managers will nearly always pick their best team and subs aren’t just there in case someone gets injured.

I think the problem is Ole is not a strategic coach, he's a man managment coach. He cant "afford" to upset any of the best players, he doesnt have the balls to take Rashford or Bruno out, he wont do a thing that compromises the atmosphere of the dressing room.
Greenwood was having a good game and Rashford had his worse game in a long long time, still he subs Greenwood.
He's the type of manager that puts the best players out, works on them being happy and hopes that enough to produce performances and results.
It's quite the psychoanalysis of you think about it. He hated being a sub, he hated what he is famed for, thus he hates substitutes...and he will spend his coaching life trying to rid the game of them.
You're telling that Amad wouldn't have at least injected some energy and skill into the side when Rashford was languishing around for the entire match putting in a performance fit for a Sunday League player? You could say he was playing for penalties, but then why persist with DDG? Instead, he took off Greenwood who was one of our better players, still looked sharp, and has been in much better form in the past month or so than Rashford. Sorry, that's just poor management and/or cowardice. Besides, the likes of James, VDB, Amad, are all (presumably) Ole signings! If you're claiming that he can't trust said players to put in a 30 minute shift to win us a match, then the manager himself is to blame. He put himself and the team in a position where he needs to rely on his bench, but feels like he can't.
Look, it's common sense that you can't win cup titles if you're afraid to replace your bad performing players in crucial games for risk of upsetting them.

I think its a bit of both, I dont believe the has an strategy besides putting your best players out there and hoping for the best. So he doesnt make substitutes because he doesnt know how to impact the game properly and he is to afraid of fecking it up so he persist with the same players eventhough its clearly not working.

The reason he never makes subs is because, rightly or wrongly, he only trusts about 13 of his players.

Bringing on Dan James or anyone else who was on the bench tonight. Oles done a great job of trimming the squad, what we need now is to add the attacking options, maybe Amad will be ready next year but he is too raw at the moment, DVB offers nothing. We need proper competition for places and that only comes with either time or investment. Add sancho and Ings for example, get Martial back to fitness and there’s a bench that offers attacking options. As it stands we don’t have that unless we start with a more defensive side.
If he subs Henderson in for the penalties (as we were all screaming for) we win that. How could he miss that? De Gea cannot save penalties.
