Mikel Arteta | Lego Pep watch

The main problem for me is that there is currently no direction. He's playing players, that are half way out the door, guys like Kolasinac, who as well as being shite, now can be shite & know he'll likely be going to Turkey in a few days. Add in the likes of Bellerin to that as well, Xhaka who quite obviously wanted out yet we give him a new contract, Willian, Maitland-Niles etc.

I know it's difficult to shift players out the door, but the squad just seems so fractured. Who actually wants to play for Arsenal?

Even with all that, that defence was absolutely embarrassing today! Letting folk like Gundagon & Torres win free headers in the box? Honestly, have some personal pride, that was just pathetic.

I'd say that could be the final nail for him.

They possibly have the worst midfield in the league.

I don't blame Arteta, the rot set in long before Wenger was hounded put. He was just the wrong guy at the wrong time.

Hope he gets the sacked. He'll probably be a decent manager in 10 years time. But is not what we need right now.

Tbh atm Arsenal still has a better squad than what Ole had when he took charge. At least a similar one. We had to make do with Pereira, Lingard, Fellani, Young, Bailly ... Shaw was half the player he is now. With a dressing room full of egos and problems.

Arteta should simply stop trying to play Pep football without the players capable of. He has a lot of fast players, some fast counter attack and a more direct approach would help a lot imo.

I think this is a slight overstatement. Ole still had some bloody good players to pick. He even had Lukaku up front regardless of whether he fancied him.

You've picked out a few of the weaker ones there, the problem is, it's not clear that Arsenal have many better players than Lingard, Bailly, Fellaini in their whole squad. I think Fellaini breezes into that midfield.

You’re clearly going to miss out on top talent, but there must be bucketloads of good young players that want to come to London and play for arsenal. Surely

Lukaku was super overweight and basically shit back then. That's why Ole dropped him and played Martial. Look at Ole's front three for example. Ole had Martial, Rashford and Lingard. Arteta has Aubameyang, Lacazette, Pepe. The only area that squad is superior than the current Arsenal squad is the midfield with Herrera, Matic and Pogba.

I'm still of the opinion that Arteta COULD be a success at Arsenal, but the recruitment has been appalling

I'm not sure how transfers work at Arsenal and how involved the manager is, but ultimately it looks like it's going to cost Arteta.

If I were in their position, I would have gone all out to keep Martinez and would have been enquiring about players like Bailly, Lindelof, Kurt Zouma, Jesse Lingard etc...players you know are almost bankers to be better than what they have and who would come in and give them a base to build from.

Instead they seem to stumble from one window to the next, overpaying for players who don't improve them in the right areas.

Cnutish.

He was one of their best players of the last decade (says a lot about Arsenal...) and now he's taking the piss out of them.

Imagine Rooney or Ronaldo tweeting "Ole's at the wheel" after the Europa League final.

Wasn't Ozil forced out of the squad because he criticised China's treatment of the Uighurs, and that threatened Arsenal's sponsors? I don't blame Ozil for being pissed off about that

There will be, but the problem is shifting the players out the door. For instance, we are desperate for a right back, but they won't go out & sign 1 while we have 4 on the books. We would have signed a senior midfielder, but only if we got Xhaka sold apparently. We wanted to sign Abraham, but only if we managed to sell Lacazette.

The likes of Gabriel & Partey will come back & make us better if they stay fit. The squad behind these guys is just not good enough though. It says a lot when you are playing Kolasinac out of position when he wants to leave ahead of 1 of your signings in Mari though.

More likely he is criticising the manager who pushed him out rather than the club.

I think this is right. The signings have a very DOF look to them. They don't scream to me that a manager has picked these guys out as guys to come in and immediately impact his team, they clearly have an origin in scouting departments, data analysis and recruitment meetings. Obviously the manager will have some kind of say, but to what extent and whether he has a veto, do we know?

In the final analysis it won't matter a bit anyway. The manager's main criteria for success is getting results and if he's not getting them regardless of the origin of the transfer strategy..well...he's going to be gone.

Arteta is so out of his depth that I'm beginning to feel sorry for him,

I'm not saying that he doesn't have it in him to be a successful manager at some point in the future but it's not going to work for him at Arsenal. He should've joined a mid-table club, learnt his trade and then moved up. However, he's gone from being Pep's sidekick to trying to turnaround one of the biggest clubs in England and he can't hack it.

They have a decent run of fixtures so I think he'll get a shot to build a run from here. If he fails then you'd have to think he's out.

This is pretty inexcusable. 1 shot off target and 19% possession?!

I expect all of them to finish ahead of them. 8th is the best I could see them doing. Everton, Villa, could also finish ahead higher than them

Everton already have a 7 point cushion, a really good manager and a striker who scored goals. Add them to the certs list.

All those pundits kissing his behind last season about how good they look and how well coached they are have gone pretty quiet now.

I think that watching their games is enough to put this to bed. Their “style” is impossible to decipher and any attacking moves seem to go absolutely nowhere. They play everything though Tierney at left back and put in crosses for a striker that they don’t really even play in the box.

They are a baffling mess and that confusion is down to Arteta. He doesn’t know what’s he is doing and it shows.

There are far worse teams in the league that have far more organization and clear ideas than Arsenal.

I think the Arse will surprise quite a few people this year and snag that Europa Conference League spot!

They've shipped 9 goals already and not a single reply. Surely he can't see September. They'll be in a relegation fight if they don't get rid soon.

They're not sacking him right now for sure. For the board, I'm quite certain games versus City and Chelsea were write-offs anyway. And if you didn't sack him at the end of last season or at various other points last season, they won't sack him after allowing him to spend 130m.

However, if things don't improve after the international break, I do see him losing his job in Oct

They didn't concede so much last because they had the Process which was essentially LVG's philosophy of possession as a mode of defense with no intention of entertaining attacking football.

But I do hope they get atleast a win soon. Bantering my Arsenal supporting younger brother isn't enjoyable anymore.

He still hasn't been sacked? Are they waiting for a bad result at Norwich first?

They also need to get rid of Edu.

Absolutely nothing other than "Pep rated him".

How the funk he's still in a job I'll never know, sure it must have something to do with United sticking by Ole and them thinking along similar lines, but 8th, 8th and looking like 8th again... what the holy feck.
More like 8th, 8th and 2x8th this season.

They ain’t cracking top 10 with this form.

around the 60 minute mark arsenal had had 3% possession over the previous 10 minutes. and yeah, they had conceded again but as a cultured and smart football theologian i couldn’t help by well up at the footballing masterclass arteta had served up. the worst part was that i knew all these philistines would give him stick.
