It’s weird how many people are glossing over the reason for us being unable to keep up the pace we set in the first half hour. We played a tough game on Thursday night. With the exact same line-up. No wonder we were leggy. Ralf needs to get to know the squad (which will take time) and start to rotate a bit more. Poor use of the squad was one of Ole’s biggest failings. Hopefully Ralf will do better because we need to share the load better than we are.

Fantastic first half, just needed to be a bit more clinical in attack. Second half dropped off as expected after Thursday night and the upturn in pressing. Dalot excellent at right back, can’t see AWB getting back in at this rate.

Some credit has to go to the players for being willing to get their heads around it in such a short space of time. Particularly as they won't have had loads of hours on the training pitch rehearsing position play. However, it was obvious second half that they ran out of steam. Honestly, that's fine. We've been in a complete spiral of doom this season so a hard-earned win against a resolute Palace team in which we kept a cleansheet is more than adequate. Conceding goals has been our undoing so the fact they were completely shutout points towards Rangnick appreciating our defence needs to be the focus. I don't think people are getting carried away, they are optimistic based on what we've just seen. The pressing and shape in the first half was fantastic and will require more time to be consistently implemented.
First half of the first half was pretty amazing. I don't even remember Leipzig under Rangnick looking that good. The only player who looked out of his depth with the new system was McTominay. Not sure if it's beyond him or he just needs time.

Both Telles and Dalot can actually play and both AWB and Shaw should be benched for a while. Fred is a mixed bag for me can't pass and doesn't understand the game but his energy is infectious and his crossing can end up in the net.
Lindelöf was fantastic, Maguire should be benched when Varane is back.

Most importantly we looked comfortable throughout and I really like that.
Clean sheet! Unbelievable. We were lively in the first half hour too, that's not been the case for most of the Last few years. 3 points in the bag, job done.
3 points and a clean sheet. Good first 30 minutes. Sloppy passing is a worry. Hopefully most of these players get a rest during the week. Thrilled for Fred and thought Dalot played well.

Rangnick himself said pre-match he couldn't just expect the players to become pressing monsters overnight. He specifically brought up the example of Klopp's first season when Liverpool got tonnes of muscle injuries, just because he was trying to switch to a pressing style midseason.
We can't yet expect our players to be able to do what they did first half for 90 minutes. They need time to get used to it. However, its impressive that with basically one training session they managed to execute the gameplan so well for so long. With how Rangnick trains forward play and decision making under pressure, I expect us to get better at capitalising on the moments when we have teams boxed in as time goes by.
I'm pleased by the start we've made and positive about where we might go from here.
Exactly. Barring one set piece Palace didn't get change out of us. Which is a HUGE difference from what we've seen this season, where any team has been able to drive a coach and horses through the middle of us at will.

We played well for 30-35 minutes and should have capitalised in that period. Given the time since the last game and the fact basically the same players played (not happy about that), this was as good as it gets.

wierd game. absolutely hectic, which you'd expect i'd say because the players know that pressing will be the buzz word but haven't been told what to do yet. we carved out very little of consequence, but did keep the ball away from our goal for nearly the whole game. probably deserved to win based on a good start and good defensive performance. i quite liked the shape

Great 30-35 mins then the fact we aint used to this pressing caught up with the team. Not so good second half, goal apart. It will take time, but you can see a style already, especially first half. This feels right.
I only saw the first half but it looked promising and glad to see we secured the 3 points, important with West Ham beating Chelsea yesterday, Spurs winning today and Arsenal likely to beat a hapless Everton tomorrow.
Ironically I think we did press well and even if not for the full 90, if we can get somewhere like 65 to 70 minutes of it per game, we will do very well. We were very solid; that's what i'm actually expecting from him, a bit similar to Tuchel in that sense. I don't think we'll concede much.
In terms of our attack, it was clear that Rangnick focused more on the defensive and pressing aspect than the quick attacking play his teams have. We are a good enough team to get away with it in the short term, especially as we still created chances in this game. Rashford should be dropped for Mason. One fact is, Fred will start, but we may need to buy his partner in January.

They couldn't get out and we turned the ball over maybe a dozen times. Encouraging. A team with our quality is going to win a lot of football matches under those circumstances.
Greenwood showed with that one piece of close control inside the box for Fred's goal why he should be starting over Rashford until he gets his mojo back

McTominay has no place in our starting 11.
Given that he's not played for a week, I'd have given Matic 60 minutes and brought on VdB or McT for him. He'd have a whole week to recover for Norwich.
I am also surprised people are surprised Sancho got subbed. He played 90 minutes in three games in 10 days before today.
We've seen how Tuchel and Pep rotate and we need to get all our squad into the same rhythm, so when injuries occur, they're not coming in cold.
I'd have also given Lingard a game as a sub but not sure what's happening there with the transfer situation.
Fred and Dalot were impressive, Telles was great too. Sancho good in the first half. Ronaldo played well bar his finishing. I have never seen him to play for the team like this while he was at Madrid. Rashford needs to sort his shit up asap. McT has a very bad spell. Maguire is solid again, but Lindelof is the better of the two.

Really enjoyed the intensity of the first half even if we found it hard connecting our forward play. Second half a little disappointing but I'm sure it will ll come together. Dalot deserves to keep his spot. Lindelof very good game. Fred will always have some brainfart moments but hopefully "the worst player of recent times" will be put to bed in the coming months. Only disappointment for me was Rashford. Rangnick lost a little bit of goodwill taking off Sancho instead of Rashford but he got it back and more when he finally took Rashford off for Elanga.
