Russian invasion of Ukraine | Fewer tweets, more discussion

He neglects to tell his viewers that his tidal wave wouldn't wipe out the UK's ability to incinerate every major Russian city (and plenty of smaller ones too) in response, using just one Trident submarine.

Do you happen to know if the PM can change the content of the letter of last resort? I presume she or he can?

Germany was completely occupied, so German society could be completely turned around. How is that possible in Russia? Germany was completely at zero ( Stunde null ) and shattered, but Russia is very far away from that. To think that you can fundamentally change Russian society from the outside ... is, let's say, ambitious.

Also…should raise a lot of moral questions? The way some people talk about it, the solution to Russian imperialism is Western colonialism.

In a way the solution isn't Western colonialism, but the end of colonialism. Russia is the last existing colonial empire. It often isn't realized that huge amounts of what is today Russia was colonized at the same time like the Americas etc. This colonial/imperial mindset still prevails and we have seen it vanish in almost all former colonial empires (except the Brexiteers who dream about returning to imperial glory, but that's a different story...). The Russian colonial empire has to be broken down, the colonies freed and be welcomed into the world.

I believe this would be possible to be a step in the right direction, as we for example see a country like Kazakstan, which is a former Soviet Republic, being close to Russia but still not supporting their war in Ukraine.

I agree with the point about colonialism. I don't mean to be pedantic or to derail, but the UK and France (to name two) are still imperial states. The UK has a very recent history of mistreating colonised peoples.

I love the way the Russians stand there telling lies and keep a straight face.

I remember watching Donald Trump do the same thing

I also remember Boris Johnson doing it.

But when it comes to Donald and Vladimir I think they actually don't care if you know they are lying because they nobody can challenge them.

I don't know. I'd imagine they can - because who is going to stop them?

Edit: If it were my letter to the captain (and I could be absolutely sure that the contents were kept secret), it would say "do nothing, just ensure as best you can the survival of yourself and the crew."

Because if deterrence had failed and a wholescale nuclear war has erupted to the point where the UK had been wiped off the map, I would see no point in simply adding to the destruction and lessening the human race's chances of survival.

ok then
Imagine for whatever reason you are in the British (or wherever you are from) army. It’s a war and a superior officer says to shoot an unarmed guy.
If you don’t he and the rest of the troop will shoot you.
It’s very clear if you refuse that they will shoot the unarmed guy and then kill you anyway.
What do you do?
I’ll give you a clue - not many people choose the honourable option when the shit hits the fan.
I suspect you would be no different so you can stop the moralistic holier than thou shit, which I strongly suspect (like 99.9% of us) you know feck all about

Stop talking nonsense mate it's not the thread for bullshit hypotheticals to justify committing atrocities.

Associated Press has filed a story saying that the Ghost of Kyiv, an unnamed fighter pilot who was praised for supposedly shooting down several Russian planes, is in fact a myth.

Ukrainian authorities admitted that the legendary pilot was a myth.

“The Ghost of Kyiv is a super-hero legend whose character was created by Ukrainians!” Ukraine’s air force said in Ukrainian on Facebook.

The statement came after multiple media outlets published stories wrongly identifying Major Stepan Tarabalka as the man behind the moniker. Tarabalka was a real pilot who died on March 13 during air combat and was posthumously awarded the title Hero of Ukraine, Ukraine’s air force said last month.

But he was not the Ghost of Kyiv, the force said in Saturday’s statement. “The information about the death of the The Ghost of #Kyiv is incorrect,” Ukraine’s air force wrote in a separate post Saturday on Twitter. “The #GhostOfKyiv is alive, it embodies the collective spirit of the highly qualified pilots of the Tactical Aviation Brigade who are successfully defending #Kyiv and the region.”

Ukraine Wants F-16s, But USAF Officials Say That’s ‘Not A Recipe for Success’

RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany—Ukraine is calling for modern American fighter jets to face Russia’s overwhelming air advantage in the contested skies over the war-torn country, but senior Air Force officials say American F-16s, which require lengthy training, are not yet part of the aid picture.

More than 40 nations gathered at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, on April 26 to consider what type of weapons to supply, including air power assistance such as F-16s, to Ukraine. The war is now shifting to the eastern front in the Donbas region, an area where long-range weapons are desperately needed.

“To effectively protect our territory, Ukraine requires at least one squadron of modern fighter jets, such as American-made F-16s or F-15s,” former commander of the Ukrainian Air Force Serhii Drozdov wrote in an April 19 opinion piece.

“According to our estimates, our pilots can learn to fly such jets at an accelerated pace of two to three weeks,” he added.

That’s an extremely accelerated timeline. The Basic course at the F-16 schoolhouse at Luke Air Force Base, Ariz., takes about 9 months and includes academics, simulation training, and flight sorties. But even before students arrive at Luke, they must complete six months of basic flight training in the T-6, seven months in the T-38, and six to eight weeks learning basic fighter fundamentals and advanced fighter maneuvers in the AT-38.

:lol: :lol: :lol::rolleyes::rolleyes:

I'd guess it's more the latter. Ukraine has had years to prepare for the possibility of a further Russian invasion, so it's likely IMO that they embedded many agents inside Russia during this time.

That’s a good point. And historically lots of Ukrainians travelled to Russia to work (not sure if that’s changed much since 2014), so I guess opportunities for getting people in were quite prevalent.

Earlier today a Ukrainian Bayraktar TB2 successfully attacked two Russian patrol boats.

The Russian Navy lost their main air defence asset (the Moskva) and now we start to see the effect of that. They can't operate safely any longer.

Interesting, Ukrainian successes can’t be denied in Russian propaganda. They are now pretending Putin is “losing intentionally”. The propaganda is reaching insane levels of absurdity…

He has a very high dan in judo. Consequently, he knows how to lead an army.

It's ironic how he claims Russia is exhausting the Ukrainian army, while in reality Russia is losing troops and material they can't replace. Meanwhile heavy supplies are just now slowly reaching the frontlines and will presumably only be available in numbers when Russia will already have lost their ability to futher attack.

Ah the good old "throw tens of thousands of lives away to make the enemy think they're winning".

That'll make 'em think twice about trying to send landing ships to anywhere on the Ukrainian coast.

Translation: "The Ukrainian army attacked a Russian staging point near Sulyhivka in Kharkov. Five armored vehicles (MT-LB, BMP and possible BTR variants) and at least 1 transport vehicle, and one T-72 tank were destroyed."

The people onboard those boats must be extra dead. Can carry up 23 including both crew and marines.

According to wiki, 17 of those have been built, and only 3-4 operate in the Black Sea, so a rather big chunk of them taken out.

It's astonishing that Russia committed two-thirds of its entire ground combat strength at the start of its invasion of Ukraine.

When you consider that it has since had to pull in units from elsewhere, and also that some of its ground combat units need to stay in places like Kaliningrad, Transnistria and the disputed islands of the far east, it must mean that Russia - short of declaring war and a full mobilisation - has very little ground combat strength left to commit into Ukraine.

A week today it will be the 9 May parade in Moscow. Anyone care to predict what will unfold between now and then? It could of course just be more of the same attritional warfare followed by a grotesque speech by Putin (presumably by now on more pills than Elvis was in his final Vegas concerts) that the struggle against Nazism continues in 2022.
