What i dont understand is why we had all our eggs in one player's basket again as if we had not learnt our lessons from previous transfer windows.
Nothing De Jong has ever said publicly has ever indicated anything other than he wanted to stay.
And if we were not sure of his intentions, sorting personal terms in advance as other clubs (Liverpool) do would give a clear indicator where things are headed. But there has been zero news of any approach on that score which, if true, is hard to understand.

Say what you like about Manchester United but they are world-class at briefing. Probably the best there is. Not a chance this has gone bad without them sending a brief or two out.

The comments are exactly what you'd expect any club to say about their best players when questioned by the press. Hell, we've done it today with Ronaldo, when we say it, it's BS though apparently and he's gone regardless.
No club will ever say their best players are for sale. Not in a million years.

All I will say is it has the whiff of many other windows, we spent all summer chasing a particualr big signing, other potential targets move and then we dont sign said player and end up scrambling or not making other signings.
FDJ is without doubt a quality player and as a player, we couldnt make a better signings really. But its a player that has publicy said he wants to stay and the manager wants to keep, regardless of the influence of the financial situation it isnt someone dying to come here, which hasnt happened before and not ended well before.
Its embarrasing and I would be surprised if by the end of next season there is a lot of talk of other targets we should have signed that we have already lost out on.
For less thean the cost of FDJ, we could already have signed Bissouma, Kamara and Enzo Fernandes....potentially a good midfield rebuild to add to the current options.
I think Bissouma will do well at SPurs, Kamara int he second half of the season will do well for Villa as for Fernandes, not seen him but wouldnt be surprised to see him touted around for £40/50 within the next couple of years.
Yet the only signing so far is a young left back that in the short term improves our squad as Telles is dreadful but does it improve on Shaw....this, when our first choice right back options, left sided centre back options, defensive midfield options, central midfield options, right wing options and back up striker options (as there are none) are all potentially worse than left back....its crazy how inept we have been so far in what should be a huge summer with 10-15 out and at least 5...with Ronaldo going and Greenwood probably too.......I would actually say our FIRST ELEVEN needs 6 signings, really we need 8....thats why part of me doesnt want DeJOng anyway

I still think it's a negotiation ploy. We've been at this for far too long now and they want us to agree to attainable add-ons so they can say they got their money back and get moving on their other targets.

I will say that the levers activated strengthens Barca's negotiating position as they don't need that cash quite as imminently as before. This is reflected by Laporta's bullish comments today.

This is the standard procedure that a club like Barcelona will take, where the head honcho is elected in by fans. They have to be seen making it look like they were fighting to keep someone even though behind the scenes, it may have been the opposite. This is fan placation and this is a fanbase that throws pig heads on the pitch at people. Everyone thinks United fanbase is toxic. They obviously haven’t seen what these guys are like when the chips are down…. them and Real Madrid with them attacking their own players vehicles.

I think you are right, player has said he wants to stay, La porta has said well, we are happy for you to stay but you need to sign a new contract on half the money so new wages £190k per week not £380k per week and we will tell United the deal is off. I met up with a fellow united fan today who I hadn’t seen for ages, a cousin actually( And a season ticket holder) who was quite upbeat about the club and ETH this season , I said I can see 8th to 10th, he said top 3, pretty sure I’ll be nearer the mark than him.

Even if we don't get De Jong, it is not doom and gloom as we have ample talent in the academy who can be bedded in. The existing squad does have the talent to compete at the top, only problem is that they suffered from a fitness and mentality breakdown last season. Like ETH said, this squad achieved 2nd in 20/21 which tells you something else happened. There are various tactics that ETH is capable of using and I am confident he can play different tactics that brings the best out of the squad's abilities.
Finally, stop being so negative. Success is not always guaranteed at a club but as fans, we must always support the club with optimism even if the entire squad is left with 16 year olds. You always hope that the club pulls through in all their matches, rather than supporting them only if they are dominant.

I felt last summer he knew all along there was no way Messi could be retained but played a charade to make it look like he was doing "everything possible to keep him".
Its the same game he is playing here, if you listen to Romero all along he has been sure from the beginning about this transfer that's because Barca wants this deal to happen, United as well. Barca just need to make it look like they have no choice but to let him go and both clubs need to come to an agreement which look like they're very close to.
Biggest indication this is almost done is the fact that we're making bids for other players now something we weren't doing before the report of a broad agreement was reported.
Which fits in with the reports that we're only going to go for our other targets after De Jong was secured.
So am fairly confident.
