He has been kept waiting by too many political leaders lately, so he tries to restore his sense of self-worth by keeping everyone waiting now.

Potentially a very concerning escalation tonight. We are closer to a nuclear war now than since the Cuban missile crisis.

Until Mr Putin makes the speech I'm a bit uneasy in criticising what might be in it. I think we have a tendency to dehumanise foreign leaders and forget that this is a person with a family and dogs. Have you even considered that he might be using this speech for something positive like announcing he's got stage 4 cancer and is dying?

Putin is likely late because he’s trying to determine the route to the studio without any windows. Wouldn’t want to fall out of one.
Unfortunately I am quite serious. The issue here is that Putin has nowhere to go but escalation now and if he declares this is no longer a military operation but instead a war then essentially all countries supplying weapons to Ukraine will be indirectly in a war with Russia. Not only that, given the terrible performance of the Russian military to date I fear that Putin may escalate the attack on the ground with the use of chemical and/or nuclear weapons. He is backed into a corner of his own making and if he loses this conflict his career and power in Russia is over so all bets are off.
The west need to try and give him an 'out' somehow where he can claim some sort of victory and de-escalate the situation otherwise I really do fear what will happen.

Russia deciding to fire a nuclear weapon at a wester country means Putin and a number of his subordinates all agreeing that they are to essentially going to all commit suicide and take most of Russia and most western cities with them.

Yes but if Putin announces this is now a full scare war his response to situations such as this could be quite different.
It's not about appeasing him, it's about giving him a way out. If he has no way out then the world becomes a much more dangerous place for all of us.
It is unlikely anything will happen other than much stricter sanctions. Nobody will fire a nuke back because they use one in Ukraine.
Russia would lose all support from any allies they have left. They would be a rogue state at that stage shunned by the international community for decades to come.
Nothing different will happen.All that means is they can then draft Russians to the war which makes sense since they’re so short of numbers.

There's no chance they'd nuke Ukraine. They've already seen the West arm Ukraine, what's to prevent the West from giving Nukes to Ukraine? They can't fire a nuke at the West otherwise that will spark WW3 so there would be no way of stopping Ukraine in that scenario. It's just dick swinging bollocks. "my dad would beat up your dad" shite. It's bully tactics, nothing more.
Ukraine will also simply say that any referendum is a scam and they'd have a good point too given the amount of people that Russia have forcibly moved away from those regions.
They have, repeated strikes in the Belgorod area, as well as strikes on Crimea which is (according to Russia) Russian territory.
It's not even in the power of "the west" to give him a way out. Russia is fighting a war against Ukraine and it is on Ukraine and Russia to decide the terms to end this, not on any other state. Claiming that the West could decide how this war ends is essentially the same arrogance towards Ukraine that Russia has.
In a way yes, the Americans were always going to back down over their missiles in Turkey because they weren't actually essential for their own defence, all Kennedy had to do was find a way to spin it as a victory, but it is different for Putin, for him this is existential.
Sure, but this has always been the case for nuclear war, at least since ICBMs. That doesn't mean the fear of nuclear war during the Cold War was stupid.
Nobody will give Ukraine nuclear weapons. There is zero chance of that happening. The only way the west would respond with a nuke would be if there was a direct nuclear strike on another western nuclear country.
That goes without saying. I’m more than confident saying it, if I get it wrong we will likely be dead anyway.

We shitting our pants every time Russian politicians or propagandists mention nukes is exactly what they want. It has worked really well for the past few decades but I think it's about time we stand up for ourselves rather than continue being pushovers.
