Aiden Aslin, the British volunteer captured in Mariupol back in April has supposedly been released along with 9 other international volunteers from USA, Sweden, Croatia and Morocco.

If that's the case then give him what he wants. I dare to say the West should add secondary sanctions, it should allow Ukraine access into the NATO and it should tell the Russians to either feck off from all of Ukraine or else NATO will go in and do the cleaning up.
 
Mobilization for a war nobody really wants is not a good idea, political suicide. Then there’s Putin’s the nuclear threat. There’s some issues mind in using nukes in Ukraine, mainly alienating its last few ‘Allies’ and the radioactive fall out on Russia itself. And just how strong and equipped is Russia’s nuclear capability in reality? They’ve spent decades talking up their military capabilities and just look what a farce their conventional capabilities have turned out to be. The Yanks, on the other, are hiding their true strength.
I expect that we will see Russia annex a large part of Eastern Ukraine the next few weeks, then the Russians bleeding a hemorrhage fighting a long drawn out guerrilla campaign by the Ukrainian resistance & army. Meanwhile Russia will be significantly and permanently weekend militarily, and will eventually seek for peace and withdraw from Ukraine (thus achieving the polar opposite from what Putin intends to achieve) when the inevitable regime change takes place.

Russia doesn't seem to have the capability for that, and mobilizing a ton of people won't change that. I'm rather thinking that this ties in with the 'referenda' planned for this weekend (I think it was?), and that Putin will use these 300k people to set up what will amount to a kind a human wall along the areas Russia will certainly claim for itself after the weekend.

What the Russians are doing are not protests. They are peaceful marches. Fairplay to them for doing it, but it won't do anything except get a few of them beaten up, mobilised and sent to the Ukraine frontline. Sorry.

We saw even bigger protests in February, and they died out to silence and nothing changed.

Interesting. Can't see how they won't limit travel abroad given that a sizeable chunk of the population would likely flee if they didn't.
 
This shit is crazy. I really hope they can overthrow the government, but i highly doubt they will. He still has a lot of support

Not to worry, you can be useful in other ways. You can go there to help distribute humanitarian aid, for instance. There are foreign volunteers in Ukraine doing all sorts of different tasks, If you're not in Ukraine right now it's because you don't want to. Not because you can't be useful in some way, that's an excuse and people with their balls in wheelbarrows don't need excuses.

And how do you know I haven't or am not planning to? How do you know I have or haven't had a few refugees in my home?

@harms , I remember when you posted a while ago about recovering from some health issues. I'm really sorry to hear that it was an accident that also cost the life of your best friend, I can't begin to imagine your pain. And having to go through it all while the country you're from and live in engages in this horrific conflict that I know that you're against.

Thanks for your continued posts here which provide a lot of clarity and context as far as what's accurate and what isn't coming out of Russia. Stay safe, man.

I just found it funny, because why did the protests kicked off now? Apart from those genuine people (like yourself) on 25th of Feb. The reason is because people in Moscow/Leningrad didn’t care enough as long as Ukraine was slaughtered by some chechens, buryats, prisoners, low-lifers and alcoholics from the most remote and poorest parts of russia.

Surely someone with balls of that size already has some, if not there are a variety of different tasks to do.

People living under authoritarian regimes have to protest and work against it in a way that satisfies @spiriticon's standard of bravery, but @spiriticon will help in their own way and don't need to prove anything at all. Russians doing things in their own way? Cowards, gulag or bust. Ukrainian refugees are cowards as well under that standard, I assume.

A lot of those are the same people that went on the streets in February. This is just the single most notable change in Russian internal/external politics in months that could’ve lighten up the spark with less political public, hence the reaction — while all the other time those same people are protesting the war by different methods.

I doubt that the people that you think are getting out would’ve went out today, certainly not en massé. They’ll need time to understand what’s going on and to figure out the way to state their disapproval. And yeah, I fully share your frustration about that part of Russian society, especially those that weren’t truly convinced by Putin’s propaganda but simply went ahead with their lives since it was easier.

So easy for certain people on here, who've probably never had to undergo that much real hardship, to turn their noses up at people who live in a country where the system can and does kill and imprison its citizens for prolonged periods of time without any justification.
