Russian invasion of Ukraine | Fewer tweets, more discussion

A member of the EU and NATO. Hungary demonstrates why Serbia shouldn't be allowed into the EU until it aligns with the rest of Europe.

I can understand Hungary being in the EU, but Orban’s policies seem completely antithetical to being in NATO. I suppose it’s easier to have the likes of Turkey and Hungary in the fold than allow them to drift towards the Russian sphere

So Russia claims they have revenged the attack killing hundreds of their mobilized last week, by seemingly taking out 600 UA personnel in Kramatorsk. Yet Reuters journalists in Kramatorsk are saying they don't see any evidence of an attack has taken place nor any casualties.
As if UAF would be that daft to hold 600 soldiers or more in a few buildings.

Wouldn't mind kicking them out tbf.
That's short sited and counterproductive... We are in a Union with Hungary the country (the people), not ony with Orban's regime. He will go away at some point... Kicking Hungary out of EU or NATO would be doing the Russian regime a big favor (Same with Turkey in NATO...).

Ate you saying Orban is falsifying elections or he is fairly elected ? The threat to kick them out should be the last chance they wise up to elect somebody normal before they are turned into autocracy.

Not seen this before and don’t know much about the Kursk but, interesting.

From Wikipedia:

The nuclear-powered Project 949A Antey (Oscar II class) submarine APL Kursk (Russian: Project 949A Антей Atomnaya Podvodnaya Lodka "Kursk") sank in an accident on 12 August 2000 in the Barents Sea, during the first major Russian naval exercise in more than 10 years, and all 118 personnel on board were killed. The crews of nearby ships felt the initial explosion and a second, much larger explosion, but the Russian Navy did not realise that an accident had occurred and did not initiate a search for the sub for over six hours. The submarine's emergency rescue buoy had been intentionally disabled during an earlier mission and it took more than 16 hours to locate the sunken boat.

Over four days, the Russian Navy repeatedly failed in its attempts to attach four different diving bells and submersibles to the escape hatch of the submarine. Its response was criticised as slow and inept. Officials misled and manipulated the public and news media, and refused help from other countries' ships nearby. President Vladimir Putin initially continued his vacation at a seaside resort in Sochi and authorised the Russian Navy to accept British and Norwegian assistance only after five days had passed. Two days later, British and Norwegian divers finally opened a hatch to the escape trunk in the boat's flooded ninth compartment, but found no survivors.

There were foreign rescue teams on the ready with the required equipment to dive to the submarine as soon as on the afternoon of the incident. But all requests to provide assistance were denied by the Kremlin, who relied on their own rescue teams. However, the Russians just did not have the right resources to make a successful rescue attempt. It's the 5-day delay that killed the survivors through oxygen depletion.

The point is that Putin, like any other dictator out there, shows no concern whatsoever for human lives beyond his own pride. And that speech was already in the open 22 years ago.

as if that is telling. The real telling point about putin is when he bombed his own people to win an election.

Of course! And it wasn't just Thatcher, all the Western governments always knew who Putin is, no matter what they say in public. Putin destroyed Grozny 23 years ago, he hasn't changed since then. It wasn't a secret who Putin is.

All the Western governments that worked with Putin did so for one reason only: money. Putin has bought a lot of friends. Now some of them (for example, Merkel) pretend they are shocked... like they never imagined that he is such a ruthless dictator.

Agree. But they really have to find a way to not fund him until his regime is kicked out. The values of the current Hungary are completely at odds with the European Union project

All Raiffeisen-Banks are cooperatives, this is the common central bank of Austrian cooperative banks, so the answer is: lots of Austrians

Interesting. I would hope that there'll be a lot of Austrian members of the bank writing to the board about this offer then. I would find it completely unacceptable that someone make an offer like this effectively in my name if I were a customer.

Or are there no members because they're all members of the sub-banks?

It's almost as if it didn't stop Hungary drifting towards the Russian sphere?

It's a bit funny that Margaret Thatcher lectures someone on humanity. But in this case she's right.

For many people Kursk was the first reveal of Putin's true nature. His interview with Larry King afterwards especially — King asks him: "What happened with Kursk?" and Putin answers with a smirk... "It sank". 118 people died under his watch with Russia bottling the rescue mission and he was joking about it.

Skip to 1:20 (what sounds a bit like "ona utonula" is him answering "it sank")

edit: wow, the author of this video actually added some text in the end saying that this is all a montage to make Putin look bad. I guess the same "fake news" techniques were used 8 years ago too

Yes, it's mostly this indirect ownership afaik, so an additional layer between individual cooperative members and this central bank.

Well it's stopped them doing much to support him other than empty words and slightly delaying some sanctions perhaps. A truculent Hungary on Ukraine's border is less of a concern than a Belarus style country tied in with Russia more directly.

Its still a bit surreal that Putin once appeared on Larry King LIVE. It would be a bit like Medvedev appearing on the View when he was President.

What is the EU project?

Not enough faces to facepalm.:wenger:

If they think they will motivate enough men to join the service with that, good luck.

Swedish foreign minister Tobias Billström confirmed today that their next aid package will include the Archer artillery system, this is probably the most advanced artillery system in use today and has been requested by Ukraine for a long time.

Normally im not into the whole military porn thing, but damn that system is impressive. It can literally drive by shoot it's massive shells and be off before the first one lands. Russian military leaders must stay up at night knowing monsters like these are on their way to Ukraine.

Exactly! We should have already provided F-16s to Ukraine. There are more than 4,600 F-16 produced, many countries use them, there is no shortage of parts, and there are well-established training courses and military simulators that can accelerate pilot training. If we give 200 planes to Ukraine, they will probably be able to gain air superiority and destroy the Russian artillery that operates inside Ukraine.

The Russians have a hard-on for Soledar, north of the Bakhmut at the moment. I remember some people online saying how Soledar itself was harder to take even if Bakhmut fell.

Apparently, they are for the mines there, not just for the political reasons.
