There are bad apples everywhere in all walks of life unfortunately.
Given that they know they have bodycams they obviously think they can get away with it because they're cops or they have a very low IQ
This wasn’t one rogue cop though. There was a bunch of them involved. Why on earth didn’t any of them speak up and tell everyone involved to calm the feck down? At no point was this an even slightly dangerous scenario for any of them.
He was just in a car accident so it's feasible that he'd hit his head and was experiencing the negative effects of that, too.

I don't disagree with you, there's not usually 1 rogue cop, they operate in/as units, in small towns that might be the entire department!
Sometimes you can understand their actions whilst not excusing them, in cases like this there is no way to understand or excuse them

Yeah, a lot of times I see videos in this thread and can see how the cops actions might be justified. It has to be scary as hell to do their job in a country where guns are so easy to get hold of. And scared people will sometimes overreact if they feel threatened. It’s the complete absence of any sort of threat in this video that makes it so hard to understand.
I understand it OK, they're power hungry think I can do what I want cops, probably racist and misogynist as well

I think in this, the first cop is alright in his handling of the situation, seems calm, professional while trying to ascertain why someone is running from an accident on a busy highway and is clearly in a mental health/drug induced crisis. It's then the escalation when Keenan runs away, then everything goes south and all the police pile in and panic.

Pretty sure we have an LAPD officer on here, right? Would be interesting to get his opinion but understandable if hesitant to do so.
May not be allowed to, either, although this may be arguable from a corporate media enquiries perspective.
The force may also monitor internet activity for mentions of LAPD etc, so officers could be reluctant to self identify especially when it directly concerns the department.
Yeah, the first cop handled the initial encounter pretty well. Although I don’t think the way he suddenly starts screaming his head off when yer man runs away (but immediately stops/puts his hands up) helps the situation.
It’s the lack of empathy that gets me. If any of them had even made the tiniest effort to show some humanity to the guy, none of that needed to happen. He clearly wanted to comply. The comments from the Uber driver on the video you posted does make me think this was some sort of mental health crisis. He seems paranoid to the extent he’s losing his grip on reality.
Whatever, if that many cops couldn’t subdue and restrain an unarmed man (who never made any effort to attack them) then there’s something seriously wrong.

I think the first cop wanted to try and scare him into staying still so he didn't run away into traffic/die/cause injury to others etc, he'd been softer earlier and empathetic to the guy and he then ran away, so probably wanted to change approach in a ham fisted way.
I feel, speaking to cops I know, it only takes a few times of people exactly like that who you approach in a softer manner, who then pull a knife, a needle or a gun, for your empathy and self preservation to take over and you to be more guarded/hostile to people.
But you're right, it's brutal all round.
I used to do psych on call in a North London hospital in an area with a shit-load of Somali immigrants. Whenever a big delivery of khat arrived you would inevitably get a few vulnerable blokes (always men, for some reason) tipping over into a psychotic episode. These guys would completely lose the plot. Ranting and raving and generally being super agitated and scary to deal with. Every single time the cops would bring them in for assessment without a mark on them. No need for tasers, or any kind of violent restraint. Just strength in numbers and basic competence at restraining an agitated individual. Doesn’t bare to think what would happen if the thugs in the video ever did a work exchange.
Yeah I've seen a lot of stuff around the fact that USA cops have guns subconsciously escalates interactions. Combined with the level of crime and poverty seems to be so much greater.
There is a video someone of US cops watching UK cops deal with a machete wielding person and they're shocked he isn't killed.
They're shocked that most UK cops don't carry a gun!

That is a crazy percentage. I just checked what it is for my state over here, and ours is 4.5% of the total state budget.
In general American police seems to be poorly trained and inadequately supervised.
I don't think that's the case in general, police unions are very strong which makes firing them very difficult at times and then when they do get fired they just move to the next town
Both poor training & ineffective supervision are true, also flawed applicant screening. Unions do bear a lot of responsibility for the morass though.

Amazing that cops are not the biggest anti civilian gun people in the world. Instead, that profession seems to attract the power hungry guys that like guns.
I’ve made the same point here a few times. It boggles the mind.
Crazy video. I'd wager the guy was carrying illegally and once they found the knife he knew they'd find the gun and he'd be facing charges, hece the sudden change in his demeanor.
That being said I don't know why Americans feel the desire to carry in the first place. The only places I'd feel comfortable carrying are those where I'm more likely to meet bears, mountain lions or wolves instead of people.

Yes, those types are very strange as well. He's probably disappointed he didn't get to play policeman and shoot the guy himself.
Those types must scare the police too because they could also pull their weapon out and in the confusion the police can't take the risk the nice guy won't now turn hostile. Or shoot them by accident in the melee. Just a crazy situation all round.
That covers most states in the US, don't forget the alligators and crocodiles, coyotes and if you're in Texas, tigers
Ooh yeah I'm Canadian so only thinking about what I might bump into here. Coyotes didn't make the list because I've encountered a lot of them these last few years and they are pretty easy to manage.
