Jonny Evans set to sign a one year contract

Retirement Home Charity FC

Hope this is true for the simple reason that it makes Maguire's leaving more likely (and frees up more funds as well as saving us from the intermittent 'noise' around if and when he should play, if he's going to move in Jan etc).

That would be curtains down for Harry, I think. We now have two each of right and left footed center backs.

Absolutely pathetic. To think a lot of people were having a go at me by saying "It's only a 2 game deal for pre-season!"

I'm ok with it. He's a mentor more than anything but he is still a PL level center back. Basically will be 4th choice at RCB, 3rd choice at LCB (maybe even 4th if you consider Shaw going at LCB). He won't be ahead of Lindelof or Maguire if he stays as depth so it's more just insurance, extra cover for the odd full rotation game.

Did we need someone for the homegrown rule or what's this about?

No problem with it. 4th/5th choice CB and great experience and leadership by all accounts. Will be on a sensible deal. ETH isn't fecking stupid or blinded by nostalgia or doing charitable deeds. He'd only do it if he looks fit for the intended role.

Can cover both CB positions, no fee, probably lowish wage and will be more than enough against teams in the bottom half of the table/league cup/fa cup.

Homegrown as well, will be an important consideration. Not a lot to dislike but nothing to jump about at either.

At least one of Maguire, Lindelof, or Bailly must be leaving.

Not sure what the point is, he can't cope with the pace of the PL anymore. I'd only be comfortable seeing him start in Carabao Cup games against League 1 teams.

Yeah fine with it. Evans as your 4th/5th choice CB and £25m in the back is much better then keeping Maguire.

Ultimately it's very difficult to sign a 3rd/4th choice CB.

Always liked Evans. Happy with this. He is an SOS signing / cover, as it could really happen that 2-3 of our CBs are injured/suspended for a few games.

I think I'm ahead of Bailly in the pecking order. Hopefully those Saudi rumours are true.

Agreed.

I was impressed by Evans, he looked nimble and composed on the ball. Signing him on a free on "low" wages makes perfect sense to me. He's better than Maguire, and probably better than Lindelof as well.

Wahey. Great to see Evans back at United. Also something weirdly comforting that the remnants of the Fergie era carries on for one more season.

Martinez-Evans to start the season in front of Onana?
lol

He’s still a good PL defender. There’s nothing wrong with this move. This might also mean that we could reinvest the money from any Maguire sale into a different position this summer. If the budget is somewhat limited, it makes sense to kick replacing your fourth choice centre half down the road for a season.

We all hope none of the back up defenders get many minutes…because that will mean Licha and Varane will have had injury free seasons.

But adding Jonny back into the squad will enable United to sell one of the others, even if a deal comes very late in the window.
