Yeah, that's the bit that's confusing me over all this.

I've seen comparisons to the De Jong situation, but that was over deferred wages when Barcelona restructured the deal mid-contract. That's an unusual scenario. This is the run of the mill situation where a player is just being sold before the end of the contract but has received all wages up until then.

If compensation of millions is due to Maguire based on the wages for the rest of his contract, does that mean in situations where the player is the one pushing for the move then they have to compensate the club for millions of the transfer fee for 'breaking' the contract mid way through?
 
Imagine being stripped of captaincy, losing your place in the starting 11 and still refusing to leave. Shows how big of a mistake it was making him captain in the first place. Awful player with an ego far beyond his own capabilities.

A lot of us do! Mount signing seems to have woken quite a lot of people up though. We are absolutely abysmal at dealing with the blatantly obvious issues in the squad. Wouldn’t be surprised to see us go out and buy a left winger before the close of window. Casemiros legs will be gone by Xmas with no help in CM and no back up options.
Mount will be Ten Hags Maguire. Same way a lot of us saw he was no where near good enough for the club before Ole decided he was going to be our new captain fantastic.
 
If he demands more money, it just shows that he's more interested in money than playtime or his career. He obviously doesn't care about the club and is acting like a spoiled child, taking a player's spot that could have been given to someone young and ambitious.

Maguire has been fully unmasked and is showing his true colours. If we acted like a proper big club, we’d have his replacement in already and ten Hag would stop the bullshit in the media of demanding Maguire fight for his place.
 
This is where I don't understand the finance people at United. Surely selling a player for £23m (factoring in Maguire's payout) is better than keeping a player on £200k+ per week, who will now sit out his contract on the bench. That's £20.8m just on gross wages and doesn't even factor in employer's NI and pension.

This is before you consider the fact he isn't good enough for United and the manager doesn't want him. Why keep a player who is happy to sit on the bench and club cannot even rely on him when required?

We never learn any lessons. The zoom in of Maguire and Henderson chatting to each other at half time speaks volumes. Neither should be near the club any more and both have value.

It will be sorted out in the end. Just some posturing and negotiation probably being handled by his agent and without much input from Harry himself.

No, we're not paying him additional to his WH wages, it's about the difference. The problem is we can't just move him without his permission. And he's fully right to demand the salary of his contract.
It seems greedy and we have every right to boo him, but it's not his fault the club made him bigger than he is.

But the privilege also costs some sacrifices. For Maguire, chance to play in a starting XI of an EPL club (and have a shot on England squad) is a privilege.

He may stay here in reserves, but he won’t be offered any contract in 2 years and will have to retire early.

He has to significantly drop his salary to leave and also drop down in size of club. What would you do in his situation?

The only person to blame is Woodward giving average players way above average salaries. None of them want to leave for that reason.

As if. The amount his salary will drop will be like £50,000 plus a week and shifting his family to another part of the country. He's originally from Sheffield so would be further away from his roots. It's not as easy as people think.

And as for the 'hatred' towards him and his family that's all online nonsense. I can't imagine he has too many incidence in real life. He doesn't even manage his social media so probably blind to all the hatred thrown towards him.
 
I don't think he should dropped to the reserves. Keep the current status quo: 3rd choice rcb, 4th choice lcb. He's the one risking his England chances for his money (his right to choose of course).

I knew his wages would be a problem getting him sold to a mid table club. Where are all the "he's worth £30-40m" people?

I was all against booing him. He tried his best.

Now he is actively making the club in a worse situation. I dont blame him for not wanting less money, but the consequences is him being booed and more disliked, and thats fair now imo.
 
He's entitled to whatever his contract says or just to stay at the club even if the club doesn't want him. Whether that's because of money or because he doesn't want to relocate his family is a different matter... Shite for us, but whatever. He obviously doesn't care about his footballing career anymore
 
Reading the Guardian article, I still think this gets done.

United will take the £25m and give the remaining £5m to Maguire.

And I really don't get why people don't understand that this is generally the cost of moving from a big club to a smaller club, which you as a player sometimes need to do because it's better for your career than sitting on the bench at a big club with "failure" virtually branded into your forehead. The player is perfectly entitled to prioritise the money and stay, but then there's a career and reputation cost to be paid. If he can persuade the selling club to take some of the sting out of it by making up some of the difference then he's fortunate, but it's not like this is something that can be expected. It is something that happens only exceptionally.
 
I am still optimistic, he will leave anytime soon. Especially after todays ETH interview where he says that “… if he’s not ready to fight he needs to go”, I think he’s losing patience with this dragging on.

We must find a solution for all parties, even if this means we’ll need to compensate him with a certain amount. Actually, I think this would be the best solution as we lose someone earning 200k per week, and can get immediately Pavard.
