Aston Villa vs Manchester United

Does not look like they are sure if he will recover in time but he was on the bench today. The following was said by O'Neill before the Arsenal game:

"John is really struggling at the moment,"

"The discomfort seems to have moved from his back to the front thigh area. He is in discomfort, we will see."

Carew was visibly struggling towards the end of the Uefa Cup win against Slavia Prague in the Czech Republic last week, but O'Neill remains optimistic that his absence will be a short one.

"He had scans that have come up pretty decently. He is going for tests now with the specialist, so we will see accordingly,"

Right, thanks.

Heard a Villa fan saying on the radio after the match that it was the likes of Barry and Sidwell that set them in such good stead today, so our midfield selection could prove vitally important.

However with Ronnie, Nani and Anderson off to Brazil for a friendly, we might not know till fairly late on to what extent this compromises SAF's Starting XI.

van der Sar/Kuszczak/Foster
Evra/O'Shea

Vidic/Evans/Brown
Brown/Neville/R. Da Silva
Park/Nani/Giggs
Carrick/Fletcher/Anderson

rafael ferdinand vidic evra

ronaldo anderson carrick nani

rooney berbatov

The thing is, this thread is bad timing for Eric's Collar because Villa are due a result against us and will be buoyed by their win at the Emirates. If they do us over, the Caftards will go mental that this thread was not done "properly." I think it's hilarious and should be used as a template in the future though!

---

Tough game, in all seriousness. They have got some real quality talent and are a compact side in midfield. We won't have it all our own way. They do tend to give you a chance though, so I just hope our boys have their shooting boots on.

Ashley Young is in great form so no Neville please. Brown, even if he shakes his injury off would lack sharpness. Rafael still a little raw for such an assignment? I reckon Sheasy will get the nod.

VDS - catch the ball this time?
Sheasy - Cruyff.
Rio -return to normal service would be much appreciated.
Vidic - will be difficult to rape Carew. He is capable though.
Evra - yes.
Ronaldo - less sulking please.
Carrick - passing.
Fletcher - BMITW.
Park - marathon.
Berba - running; verb; to go quickly by moving the legs more rapidly than at a walk and in such a manner that for an instant in each step all or both feet are off the ground.
Rooney - goals please.

Narrow win.

Currently i think Park is the best option for us. Intelligent and skillful player that doesnt mess around with the ball which is what we are better upfront unlike Nani.

i'm worried about the likes of Ronaldo, Nani and Anderson. South America is a long way away, and i'm not even sure they'll be back in time. what's the fecking point of having these international friendlies so far removed? FFS!

Park also will be on Arabia playing World Cup qualifiers.

Tough game, we can't afford to drop any points. Still I expect no more than a point, Villa will be up for it and they looked very organized at the back yesterday at the Emirates. We must play a midfield three to match Barry, Petrov and Sidwell / Reo-Coker, otherwise we'll get overrun.

They played that middle three last time and we took them apart, I doubt we'll get overrun.

Me too, but Petrov is a different player this season. Their drop of form started with his injury, on the day he has returned to the side they beat Arsenal.
If he wasn't playing in this game, I would've been much more relaxed.
Still, however we should win this, Villa play attacking football, as we do, it should be one hell of an entertainment.

Considering our away form this season and the fact that Villa look much better than last year I'm worried nevertheless. We do possess the quality to tear them apart, but Fergie needs to get the tactics right. We were outplayed in midfield at Anfield, Emirates and in the second half at Goodison Park, so the key to success obviously lies there. A solid back line would help the case though, at the moment we concede too many stupid goals due to individual errors away from home.

From their first 13 games last season they got 24 points, including a very impressive 2-0 win against Chelsea.

They really don't look much better than last year.

Although to be fair they defended well against Arsenal, but they were very poor against Newcastle and Middlesborough.

Bah my winning run stopped at 1 game :(

Anyway Team should be....

GK: VDS

RB: Brown
CB: Ferdinand
CB: Vidic
LB: Evra

RM: Ronaldo
CM: Carrick
CM: Anderson
LM: Giggs

CF: Rooney
CF: Berbatov

Subs: Foster, Rafael, Evans, Fletcher, Park, Nani, Tevez,

Wont be as easy as some years after their win at Arsenal so 1-2, Ronaldo x2 for us

Giggs on wing is crap so keep Ronaldo there and put Park on the right. Fletcher ahead of Ando on the middle for this one IMO. If Brown isnt fit that looks likely then Oshea there like last game.

Park will proberly be away with Korea while Giggs will have the week off, he'll play! As for Fletcher he might not even be fit for the game!

Why do I feel like if we put on a Tevez-Rooney combo we'd rip Villa apart like last season ? with Ronaldo Left / comboing Evra / Park wide right with either Neville/Rafael. C Midfield with Anderson / Carrick. Vidic / Evans

I'd suggest
Rooney
Tevez

Ronaldo Anderson Carrick Park

Evra Vidic Evans Gary/Rafael

VDS/Foster

Because they don't defend well against players attacking them from deep and committing players?

I definitely think we should use Tevez and Rooney as well.

----------------VDS
Rafael - Ferdinand - Vidic - Evra
Nani - Carrick - Giggs - Ronaldo
------Rooney - Tevez

Villa have a lot of pace going forward so I´d prefer Rafael to Neville for this one. Berbatov has started every single league game since joining the club so if Rooney is fit then I think it´s time for Berba to get rotated for once. Giggs will have a long rest before the game and will be fresh.

Your conclusions are wrong there mate. You must directly compare the fixtures they already played (for example Arsenal away), do your math and you'll see they got seven points more this time around from the same fixtures than last season. Fortunately they still have trouble with consistency, so I can see us winning comfortably if we take our chances, but looking at our away form once again, that's a big if.
O'Neill has added squad depth as well which will prove very important for the rest of the season, because it killed their last campaign after Christmas.

I dunno because it was Zat Knight' defending that was mainly the blame for us shipping 4 past them last season

3-0 United

No chance

We have a decent record against them but this match is going to be much harder than that. Their front line can cause us big problems. If we dont match them for workrate on the day they'll turn us over

Prediction:3-1 win to us. Ronaldo 2 goals, Tevez

im worried about Ronaldo and Anderson, BRAZIL is long way to be back and fit 4 saterday, though its a late kick off...i thought brazil agreed to play all these freindlies at Arsenal's ground ?

The same could be said for them, the only thing is that is more probable that United raise their game for this one. I see Villa having a hiccup after taking down Arsenal this past weekend.

Dont think giggs, fletcher, neville or brown will be fit for this one. were not sure when nani, ronaldo and anderson will be back from brasil.
Im not sure if rio and/or rooney will make it back in time either. weve a really tough fixture list coming up and even saf will have little idea who will start until thursday at the earliest IMO.
