At least 25 people have been killed in a series of simultaneous attacks by terrorist gunmen at seven sites in Mumbai, India's financial hub, according to local television reports.

A.N. Roy, a senior police officer, said several people have been wounded, and police were battling the gunmen. Among the targets were two luxury hotels, police said.
"The terrorists have used automatic weapons and in some places grenades have been lobbed, the encounters are still going on and we are trying to overpower them," Roy says.
The gunmen attacked two luxury hotels, the Taj and Oberoi, both of which are frequented by foreign business travelers.

Mumbai, on India's west coast, is the Asian nation's most important financial center.
The Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus train station in southern Mumbai was attacked, as was Leopold's restaurant, a Mumbai landmark.
Attackers were still holed up in the Oberoi hotel, which has been at least partially evacuated. The Oberoi is adjacent to Mumbai's main business district.
Other attacks took place at a movie theater and a hospital, reports said.

I was in the Oberoi just a few weeks ago.

This is ridiculous. Apparently the terrorists have stolen a few cars and are driving around shooting randomly. No one knows how many of them are there.

This is a new tactic.

Any idea who the terrorists are, besides the usual suspects?

I'm guessing the elections are around the corner.

Fcuk sake, what's the stupid police doing! There'll be a 100 dead before they have this under control!

Edit: 40 dead, 150 injured so far.

Aparently they have been shooting tourists at VT Station as well - some news reports saying 80 dead already, guess we wont know the reality until it all calms down

crazy stuff

Times of India reporting death toll at 80

this is beyond description. Will India see major changes to its "homeland security" after this or will this type of thing continue?

This is bad, all these high frequency terror attacks in last couple of years are gonna bring about a big change in political landscape of India. Something really drastic could happen now.

I don't think living in a big city in India is safe any more.

The head of the anti-terror police has reportedly been killed in an exchange of fire at the hotel.

250 injuries throughout the city it is being claimed.

40+ hostages, specifically asked for British and American passport holders apparently.

Christ this bad. :(

What's with the hostage taking? That's not the typical MO. What are they planning, you dred to think.

The Oberoi hotel is on fire.

BJP trying to divide country over terrorism: Sonia Gandhi

26 Nov 2008, 1530 hrs IST, PTI

BEHROR: Accusing the BJP of trying to divide the country on the issue of terrorism, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday said the party
which is giving "lessons" to the government should instead rein in organisations associated with it.

"The opposition has no social issue to raise in the polls except terror, terror. They have always tried to divide and rule. They are disturbing the communal harmony and national unity," Gandhi said addressing an election rally in Bhiteba village.

"How dare they talk of terrorism? It was there leader who escorted terrorists to Afghanistan and the Parliament was attacked when their prime ministerial candidate was the home minister," the UPA chairperson said referring to the 1999 Kandhar plane hijack episode.

In a veiled attack on Sangh Parvar outfits, she said "they should control their organisations instead of giving lessons to others.... Terrorism has no religion but it is the country's worst enemy."

On the allegation of failure to control Naxal menace, she claimed the violence by Left wing extremists was rising in states ruled by BJP.

"They have selfish interests. They talk of Naxal violence but it is occurring in the states ruled by them.... They are trying to poison the atmosphere."

Interesting this happens the very day Sonia makes this speech.

Deccan Mujahideen claims responsibility for Mumbai attacks

Major gun battle underway at the Taj.

NDTV's reporter is nearby and speaking to camera now.

A large fire is also now bruning and getting worse.

My god.

NDTV reporter says that screams are coming from within the Taj, fearful of the fire. They're on the fifth floor, jeez.

Some appliances have thankfully arrived, hopefully they can get o them.

Sky News saying 1,000 wounded.

New attack now being reported.

This time outside a pub near the marketplace. Unconfirmed reports of fatalities among the police.

An eyewitness who escaped from the Taj has said that a stairwell in one of the wings is full of dead bodes.

:(

I think i'm going to turn this off for a bit.

I know that this question, coming from an American is kinda rediculous...

But what if anything have the terrorists claimed as their motivation for taking Americans and Brits?

Or put plainly, have they (the attackers) declared a motive for this attack?

The Bastards were even attacking hospitals which is sub human behaviour.
Depressing.

Absolutey agree, although there is sadly prescedent for it, in Iraq and more pointedly in Ahmedabad earlier this year.

Just heard that it is believed that at least some of the attackers may have arrived by boat, a few with discarded equipment have been discovered apparently.

If they're going to storm the hotels in search of the hostages they best be damn sure of matters, we all know how things can go wrong/become chaotic in such situations.

The focus it seems oculd be shifting to the Oberoi hotel.

:(

This is truly terrible. The sad thing is that acts like this have almost become part of life in Mumbai.

Further Breaking News - A new hostage situation has developed, up to five terrorists are now holding people at an office block in the centre of the city. It is known that two had definitely escaped police earlier in the morning but whether they are involved it cannot beconfirmed.

How come The Sun have main stories on Gordon Ramsay and Nicola McLeans tits on I'm a Celebrity and hardly feck all on this atrocious situation...???

Terrorists don't have mistresses or big tits apparently.
