It's an 11 man game. A shaky defence will spread uncertainty throughout the team, and we don't have the greatest midfield as it is. The strikers may well be having an off day but again, how can you judge them when they aren't getting any service?

When the defence is broken then the attack suffers because the midfielders are more mindful of protecting the defence. This leaves the strikers isolated.

I can't believe people are blaming this on Fergie. The team has a makeshift defense and the midfield didn't look good to me in the starting XI. Fulham have a good experienced manager which clearly used our defensive problems to motivate his team.

But our best CM play at CB instead of the missing players. We're lucky to have ridden our luck occasionally, and therefore we're still in the hunt. No club would have coped better missing 5-6 defenders.

Or we'd have given another shit performance - there were a few recently, with the same players; Berbatov would have been ineffective, Obertan would have played like Nani and Fabio would have looked as bad as he did against CSKA. Result - we lose, and the tactical masters wondering if we should have played 3-5-2 with Fletcher at the back.
Because there's no service from midfield. And an under par midfield playing in front of a shaky defence doesn't do the front men any favours does it.

I thought the midfield was more to blame really. Never gave the forwards anything to work with at all and it's been the same for weeks now. We have had 2 really good performances all season at Spurs and Chelsea. The rest have been average or poor. This kind of result has been coming with the injuries and poor form of so many players.

FFS, some of the overreactions on this thread are well over the top - to the idiot saying Sir Alex fecked it up - what are you meant to do when you don't have a single defender fit? Playing midfielders in defense will always cause problems, primarily us losing possession because they dont know how to play the ball out of midfield. When we're playing our first choice midfield in defense, we automatically have a weaker midfield and shit service to our front men.
We have injury problems and can hopefully go on a run once they're behind us. I doubt any premier league side (Chelsea included) would be able to perform away from home at Fulham with seven of their first choice defenders (Rio, Vidic, Brown, Neville, O'Shea, Evans, Raphael) out of action. Just think about how Chelsea would get on with Terry, Carvalho, Alex, Ivanovic, Balletti and a couple of others out of action?
