Nani

Yes, Nani has played some fantastic through passes since his first season. The problem was that he also used to play plenty of not so good ones at wrong times, and his general passing sometimes let him down. Everyone used to slate him when that happened and he probably lost confidence in himself, so we saw less evidence of it than we might have. Now he's confident he'll be trying all sorts of things and right now they are coming off.

Its interesting to say that you think he's more exciting than Ronaldo, but I can understand that point. As with Ronaldo he was here a good amount of time and we knew exactly what he was capable of. With Nani we're still in the discovery period. We dont know his limits yet. But if you look at the good things he's done so far, if he can have a fantastic season where he pieces everything together, then he's going to be pretty devastating. There's no reason at all why he couldnt mature into a player about on Ribery's level. He's no Ronaldo or Messi but thats a big ask. He can be the best of the rest if he continues to improve.

I think he has more variety to his general play than Ronaldo. He has better first touch, better through pass, cross and is generally a better passer and his dribbling and close control are much better. He also tracks back better than Ronaldo. Ronaldo has more variety in his finishing, better acceleration, physique, arrogance and more tricks up his sleeve. I think if Nani finishes his career at united, he'd make more impact overall than Ronaldo did.

Why Nani lost his landlord and chauffeur when Cristiano Ronaldo left United

Nani lost his best friend, landlord and chauffeur when Cristiano Ronaldo left Manchester United.

But the Portuguese winger believes he can now emerge from the Old Trafford shadows.

Nani, 22, was heralded as Ron Mk II when he followed the same route to United from Sporting Lisbon in a £17million deal two years ago.

But he has been a peripheral figure in Sir Alex Ferguson’s team – despite a medal haul that has seen him lift the Champions League as well as two Premier League titles and the Carling Cup.

Nani said: “Everyone knows it was more difficult for me when Ronaldo was here. It was difficult for the manager to play with the two of us.

“Now I can show my ambition and I will work very hard. This is going to be my season. I have played a lot of games and done some good things, but I need to improve. I come alone now when I drive, but for my first couple of months I lived with Ronaldo and he helped me by teaching me the roads. In Portugal, we drive very fast, but over here it’s not the same and the police aren’t the same!”

After his father walked out when he was a young boy, Nani’s brother, Paolo Roberto helped him survive in the tough Lisbon suburb of Amadora after the family had moved to Portugal from Cape Verde.

It was then that Nani learned to perform his famous goal celebration - a cartwheel dubbed the 'Leap of Death'.

He revealed Wayne Rooney can also do the celebration. He said: “Wazza can do it. One time he said ‘Nani, look’ and then he did it very well. I gave him nine out of 10.”

Yesterdays article. But im posting it anyway.

Somehow I dont think Rooney can do his celebration as well as him. Hope he doesnt try to replicate it during a game because we cant afford him getting more freak injuries.

I love Nani, but this is bull.

Good news for Nani

Ferguson rules out Nani sale
Portuguese staying put
Last updated: 29th November 2009

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has insisted he has no intentions of selling Nani in January.

The Portuguese winger has admitted his frustration at being unable to hold down a regular first-team spot this term.

Following the exit of Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer, Nani was seen as the heir apparent but that has not transpired.

The likes of AC Milan and Benfica are both said to be keen on the 23-year-old but Ferguson is adamant he will not be selling.

"Some big clubs have been mentioned for Nani, like Milan and Benfica, but there has been no contact made with us - and we wouldn't entertain selling him anyway," Ferguson is quoted by the Sunday Mirror.

"He is only 23. If someone came in for Nani in January we would tell him that he is going absolutely nowhere.

"He's a young boy and he wants to play - and he might get a chance against Spurs in the Carling Cup this week.

"He has suffered because Valencia's form has been excellent and because Obertan has emerged as an interesting player.

"It is no criticism of Nani, but the way things have developed in the last few weeks have gone against him.

"I have spoken to him and told him that he must take his chance when it comes along."

Nice to see Fergie offer an olive branch. Hopefully he can start against Spurs and give us a performance we know he's capable of.

Wow, what a deluded load of rubbish.

Good to see that Sir Alex wants to give Nani more of a chance though.

Only thing stopping Nani making it at United is Nani himself. I remember Fletcher had a dip in confidence when the crowd got on his back, but he rolled up his sleeves and worked ever harder. If Nani follows Fletchers example then theres no reason he can't become a top, top winger for us.

So Nani, lets see what you're really made of.

SAF didn't rule out a summer exit then?

Fergie should have just saved his breath for that isn't going to happen anytime soon.

I love the potential that the lad appears to have but sadly he appears to be in need of psychological coaching more than footballing

If he is injured then well enough, but if not then I really don't know why he doesnt even start games like these.
What's the deal with him? Is he now really injured or not, because one thing I know for sure, he is ten times better on the left side than a Wellbeck or Obertan.

Cant disagree

All we know is hes injuried but really can we say he would be better in these types of games? In every game since October he has been so inconsistant and everyone always bitches about him, i mean when he plays its "get obertan on" when hes not in the team hes seen as a saviour

He definetely couldn't have done any worse than Welbeck or Obertan did today, but then again, neither could Tosic or Park.

to be fair he could have dived about and rolled around a lot. might have earned us an extra minute or two of added time.

So much bias against him it's unreal.
That he is inconsistent is not a secret but I can't remember a single game of him that was so shit like what Welbeck and Obertan showed today.

He can make the difference in games like these, a moment of brilliance or an assist out of nothing like he did in his last game for us... The reaction to him on this forum baffle me every single time

Thing is, he is just better than them, at least on the wing.
Well and I agree Park would have done better, because he is also better than them on the wing, but he will probably start against City so I see why he wasnt starting, but I really don't get what's the deal with Nani

Not hard really, in a game he sees so much of the ball but his end product is inconsistant, beating a man can vary, and finally his decision making on when you release a ball/type of cross leaves a lot to be desired. I do agree that he does give us a unpredictable component to our attack and in a 433 he could be really good on the right

I give you my word, you will never see something like that from me

There's a surprise!

Oh and I don't see Nani as a saviour, and who knows whether he would have change the game today, but all I want to know why the hell he isnt used at all anymore and we rather play a young boy out of position instead of using him

You are to Nani what Tevez' Mum was to Tevez.

I wouldn't put it past him.

Of course you wouldn't, you thought Nani was terrible against Wolves earlier this season - a game in which he was 20 times as good as Obertan and Welbeck were combined today.

In fact, most of the people who gets on Nani's back always state he only delivers against the lesser teams, so it's not unreasonable to think he'd have been able to do a lot better than Obertan and Welbeck did today.

if nani is not injured then i think its stupid not to play him.

He clearly is injured.

We could do with him back, at least he gives us SOMETHING.

If god forbid Giggs or Valencia get injured for a month or 2 then we're fecked.

He definetely couldn't have done any worse than Welbeck or Obertan did today, but then again, neither could Tosic or Park.

Actually he could have. And he has done.

Sunderland at home, for example.

Actually, maybe not worse as such but it's hard to separate one truly awful performance from another.

The crucial difference here is that both Welbeck and Obertan are a good bit younger than Nani and neither of them have been playing first-team football with United for the last three years.

What does this make for a difference to whether he should get games ahead of them on the left wing?
Welbeck just isnt a winger and Obertan is not quite there yet.

Well but you are right it shouldnt be about whether he could have done so much better, but all I want to know is if he is really injured or not, because I don't know why he doesnt even make it to the bench or is picked ahead of a Welbeck on the left wing when he has clearly shown on many occassions that he is capable to produce something against lesser teams

It makes no difference whatsoever. But it means that we can afford to show Obertan and Welbeck a lot more patience than we can afford to show Nani this season.

I can only assume Nani really is injured or he would have played against Leeds. Either that or SAF was resting him for City. Still think he would have made the bench if fit though.

The last thing Ferguson said at the start of the year was that he has started training again so it will probably be another couple of weeks before he will be available for games. He is nowhere near as bad as people make out. He has a lot of ability so it is frustrating when he does not deliver what he is capable of, but he seems like he needs confidence to deliver his best and on occasions he does under perform but he always produces moments in games where he creates a goal or very good chances.

Don't think he will play against City...It will most probably be Park and Valencia on the wings, and rightly so...but against teams like Leeds he really should deserve to get a start if he is fit I think

If he's fit, he should be playing these sort of games. Regardless of what he's said to the press or not. We're weak on the left, and aside from Giggs I think he's our best option there, though that doesn't say a lot.

If he's injured, fair enough.

There you have it.

City game is probably too soon for him so.
