Danny Welbeck

Good to hear he's 2/2

2/3 but yeah it is good to see him doing well. He is probably just above Championship level in my eyes if he can be consistant.

He is a good player Danny, still reckon he has a great chance of making it at United just depends on what level of importance he will achieve in the squad.

He has scored 2 goals in his last 2 games

He has only played 2 games for PNE? And scored in both?

3 games I believe. Still it's irrelevant, what is however is the performances he's putting in, the attitude and workrate.Seems to be heading in the right direction so far

Welbeck is one of those players that has the ability to play the United way i.e. with skill and fluidity. Many players like this take a little longer to produce results. I can't see him ever being a big goal scorer but is the type of player that United needs to maintain their flowing football that has been the hallmark for so long. It is the reason why United always creates many more opportunities than the opposition and why blown scoring chances don't hurt them so much.

I'm sure this is in SAF's thinking and that's why he's being patient with the lad.He has gone on record as saying that he's nowhere near physical maturity yet and also he's predicted as being 6 ft 3ins in height eventually

They're happy with Welbeck and ready to murder the rest. Good stuff.

Welbeck - Another great goal, was looking for runs but no one passed to him - 6

Brown and Welbeck were our only good players IMO.

lonnergan - 5
hart - 0
collins - 4
st ledger -4
nolan -5
wallace - 4
jones - 0
chaplow - 5
mellor - 2
brown - 2
welbeck - 8
subs
carter - 0
beast - 4
flock of seagulls - 4

Tossers the lot except welbeck, ledger and treacey

Welbeck - 6. We're letting his talent go to waste. Must be wondering what the f**k he's doing at North End because of all the wasters behind him.

Why? His movement and positioning are very good when he's played centrally and he's a fine finisher.

Am I the only one who thinks having to do a lot of off the ball running for a mid-table team might actually be very good for his development? He's used to playing for teams who dominate possession and create plenty of chances, if he can't afford to be quite as languid for Preston as he at times has been for us, that's not a bad thing.

I can see where you're coming from. If you watch him for the reserves his workrate is excellent, and he showed that against Wolves in the Carling Cup after Fabio got sent off.

I think he just needs a consistent run of games rather than intermittent reserve games, then benched with the first team squad and the odd game. It's hard to get any rhythm in his game and the crowd were getting on his back (unfortunately) so it's a great chance for him to get some games in a competitive environment away from the pressure of Old Trafford and our fickle fans.

Yeah, at times it can be, in fact I've paradoxically defended his work rate many a time in the past. However, he does have games where he waits around for the ball too much and I guess what I meant to say was hopefully playing for a team like Preston will eliminate that instability.

I think what he means to say is that Welbeck is more likely to be a scorer of great goals rather than a great goal scorer..

Very early days to say that I think he is easily capable of both. One the championship will help is his heading and general presense in the air. Its an attribute that somewhat behind the rest of his game imo.

Great to see him scoring though, people who wrote him off purely based on what they had seen in his few 1st team appearances now get a chance to witness why alot of us rate him so highly.

That was not my opinion on it.. I was merely speculating about what he possibly meant..

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said he tried to persuade Rossi to stay, promising the striker he would be given opportunities at Old Trafford.

But he added: “He wanted to have a go at first-team football. We’ve got a clause in his contract where he could come back to us at some point.”

Take what you want out of that.

He had an interview saying he wanted to come back and fight for a first team spot at United about 3 weeks before we sold him. In the meantime we signed Tevez, making our list of strikers : Solskjaer, Saha, Rooney, Smith and Tevez.
We sold Smith and Solskjaer retired early in the season, but both happened after Rossi was let go. You can see why he might have felt he could no longer fight for a spot with all those senior players in front of him. Signing Tevez no doubt sent the wrong signal.

From Preston fans, he's getting rave reviews, they seem to absolutely adore him there!

Did this surprise anyone else? Not taking anything away from the lad as it was a good solid debut however, from what I saw, he hardly touched the ball - well at least compared to some of the other MOM candidates. This wasnt his fault, I felt for the majority of the match we seemed to bypass the centre midfielders opting instead for the wings or a more direct play.

Welbeck was absolutely superb tonight. The first time I have seen him show his true class and potential - hopefully a sign that he has settled in. From his turns, first touches, running at the defenders, hassling and how he closed everything down not giving them a second on the ball - my MOM.

Most players played well, in particular Sedgwick and Parkin. I thought Parkin and Welbeck were far more effective than Brown and Welbeck. Parkins first touch tonight was sublime. His flick ons and how he held the ball up every time it came to him ready to lay it off to Welbeck impressed me.

So overall a good team performance and a decent debut from Matty James but for there was no question about the MOM, well done Danny Welbeck.

Agreed. He was top class tonight, just shows what happens when we actually give him the ball. He loves that little flick round the defender and their only option is to foul him as he is simply too quick!

Parkin & Welbeck could cause Blackpool lots of problems :gentry:

Agreed with the above. If I had to pick one it would have been Welbeck.

Well done lads.

Bring on the sand flickers!

He seems to be settling in well there. Big game for them on Saturday at 1pm against Blackpool at Deepdale. Almost tempted to pop up for it.

They seem to think that he may have picked up a knock to his lower back, although he stayed on. James came off with cramp.

Welbeck, Well Happy
Posted on: Tue 09 Feb 2010

Preston North End striker Danny Welbeck played a big part in both North End goals and he was delighted with the three points from the Sheffield United victory.

Welbeck set up his fellow Manchester United loanee Matt James for the first goal and was sent tumbling in the box in the second half for Preston's crucial penalty winner and he was happy with his contribution to the game.

"It's not all about getting the goals just for myself, I'd rather the team win as we did tonight," Welbeck said after the match.

"It was good to get back to winning ways, to get the three points and put in a performance like that, it's what we were all looking for and now we are just looking forward to the next game.

"I think the start we made gave us the momentum throughout the game. When they got the goal near the end the last ten minutes was a bit of a struggle but we all held out and we battled to our best.

"I'm just looking forward to working hard, getting games under my belt and playing football."

The Manchester United starlet paid tribute to the Club's management and coaching staff and revealed that he is getting a double dose of Ferguson advice with Ferguson Snr and Jnr both giving him pointers as to what he is doing right and wrong during matches.

He said: "Darren's a good manager and we've got good coaches behind us and we are just getting together and gelling as a team and working well with the coaches - it looks like it paid off tonight.

"Darren's turning me into a more penetrative player, I'm looking in behind a lot more than I did at Manchester United, at United it was a bit more tippy-tappy football, coming in and dropping off and everything but at Preston I am a lot more effective going in behind and that's what's been drilled into my head.

"I've spoken to my other Gaffer after the games and we just talk about with reference to what I need to improve on and what I did well, it's good to get feedback from everyone."

Welbeck made a key contribution in setting Matt James up for his 10th minute opener and he admitted that he's looking forward to continuing a partnership which has already been developing for several years.

"I have played with him since I was 12. He is a quality player, you can give him the ball in any situation and he will get out of it most of the time. He's got great feet, he's confident on the ball and because I have played with him since I was 12 and we still play together now we both know each other's game.

"He knows how to find me and when he turns I know where to run and he knows where I am going. Hopefully we will be playing well together. I spoke to him about the club and I told him that it is a great club to come to, it's got great fans and I told him that he would enjoy himself here.

"I think that goal will boost his confidence, he looked comfortable throughout the whole game so I am really happy for him. I set him up for one so he has got to set me up now, I am just waiting for him to return to the favour."

With three points in the bag, Welbeck and his PNE team-mates can now look ahead to Saturday's big derby against Blackpool, it's a game Danny is really aiming to get his teeth into it.

"A derby is a derby and I love derby games," he said.

"We've got our heads up high now and hopefully we can go into that one and pull a result out. Every derby is massive for every team at every club, for the fans for the town and everyone connected with the club, so I am looking forward to it."

Good to hear, he's always had that potential to be that player constantly on the last line, running in behind, letting players play off him and being a great target-man once he's filled out a bit more, so as long as he keeps learning this part of his game it'll undoubtedly be a successful loan.

Might even lead to him getting more game-time up front than he had done previously.

He was very unlucky not to score. His touch in the box was superb and took him to goal but he was brought down when he looked clear to score.

Now given a run of games he looks to be getting stronger.

Honestly I'll be shocked if in the future the lad isn't naturally prolific in front of goal.

I agree, I think he is going to become a top, top player that scores 20 goals a year for a top club, well at least I hope he does. He is extremely promising showing various technical abilities that will help him score goals in any league v any defense. He is one for the future and is certainly yung and lernin.

Im glad to hear that Darren Ferguson is focused on making him into a more direct striker. Welbeck sometimes suffers from a lack of goal threat when he has played for us despite having all the technical attributes. I would like to see him become a more dangerous striker who gives nightmares to defenders.
