Rooney was the best player we have had for some time and it will hurt to lose him. But I won't be wishing him ill. He almost carried us single handedly last season. Some great memories too.

Its a little bit early to start the comparisons really. I mean Rooney could in theory end up deciding he wants to stay and sign a new deal. Or he could insist on signing for a foreign club.
However, he's started this all very very badly. The timing of him saying he wants to leave just as the season is starting, and the lack of any good reason why he might want to leave, mean that he's got some work to do if he's going to leave in a better way then Tevez did. But its not beyond him.

Ronaldo of course. I know people say a lot about Ronaldo but he was A) twice the other two on the pitch PUT TOGETHER and b) always honest about his goals in his footballing life. For me I've always looked at Ronaldo, barring the on the pitch antics, as a classy individual. He talks about United with pride and nothing but praise. He's in touch with Fergie and looks at him as a father figure. He feels a certain debt to the club.
Rooney, if all of this is true, is an Englishman, who has never had any fondness for our rivals. And unless he wants to go back to Everton (

That's not necessarily true though. You have to look at the specific cases, of which I assume you're thinking of Rooney, Tevez and Ronaldo.
Ronaldo moved to the only club that has more pulling power than United. And considering he was a foreigner in England, and Madrid was his 'childhood' club, there's no need to use this as an example of United not being able to hold onto players.
Tevez wanted to stay but needed more opportunities to play first team football (or so he says). United couldn't guarantee him that, but that's what you have to expect when you're playing for one of the few biggest clubs in the world - you have to earn your place. Then there's team dynamics, game-plans, etc. that need to be considered when selecting the side. Tevez' move to City wasn't really an indication that United can't hold onto their best players.
Rooney... Well this is all yet to be seen for now.

This could well be the case here too. If he's being offered silly money then we're priced out of keeping him. Just like Everton were. If he wants out of the UK because of the media circus, well, we have to respect that. The thing is that we know feck all yet the amount of hateful comments here is staggering.
