MERGED: Rooney signs new contract!

I can't forgive the contempt Rooney has shown to the club, manager and supporters, not anytime soon. But to be fair to the gimp, who's to say he buckled down and signed the original contract that was tabled to him in August? No one has actually seen the thing and all sorts of figures came up assuming United actually offered a far bigger payrise.

And Fergie did said it was the best offer in the country.

He had 18 months of wages, now he has 60 months of wages

If it's 150k, isn't that what he was going to be offered anyway? I still think it has much more to do with his endorsements than salary, since he'd be a less valuable spokesman were he to leave in such disgrace following his prostitute scandal.

Read the Rooney statement again. At what point does he say "I want to leave"? Fact is, he doesn't. He says he wouldn't renew his contact due to the result of a meeting with David Gill regarding the clubs future. None of us know what that meeting was about, was it to do with money? was it to do with Sir Alex? Was it to do with ambition? No one knows. Instead, alot of you choose to make your own stories up.

Watch Rooney's interview. The key part of it was he felt he had no where to go until Sir Alex said the door was open. Does that sound like a player who desperately wants out of the club? No, it doesn't. Those words from Sir Alex have been the key to all of this.

My guess is Rooney and Sir Alex had had a fall out stemming from the revelations about Wayne's private life. Their relationship has deteriorated and Rooney, who looks at Sir Alex as a "father figure", has taken the knock. Add that to on going contract negotiations (which may I add should have been sorted a while ago), poor form, constant media attention, marriage problems, persistent injuries and the presence of Paul Stretford on his shoulder, things have spiraled out of control.

I imagine there are worries around the playing staff about the Glazers. I mean us fans are scared enough. The G&G campaign has been in full flow and every other week the newspapers print how the club is in free fall and things are falling apart. Is Rooney wrong to be concerned about this? No, he isn't. Not one bit. The fans want answers and so do the players. You can't argue with that surely.

A player, who is on record from his own mouth, stating he wants a life contract, he wants to emulate Ryan Giggs and Bobby Charlton, he couldn't play for another club suddenly doesn't change their mind.

Again, we don't know everything there is to know about this fiasco. I think United have questions to answer, as do Rooney and Stretford. One thing I will say, is I won't stand and boo Rooney as who am I, without knowing whats gone on, to do that?

No one knows what is in his new contract when it comes to money, so why do you all persist in listening to the very media sources that told us Rooney would be gone in January? Will some of you not learn? Clearly not.

Yes, this whole thing has been a fiasco and yes I have lost some respect for Wayne Rooney as a result of it, but the situation is far from unattainable in my eyes. There was no transfer request nor was there any holding the club to ransom. Fergie has handled this brilliantly, and if he has decided Wayne should be able to stay and we as a club should move on, who am I, or any of you, to question him.

After all, what do we really know?

I'm delighted he's staying. There's absolutely no doubt that he's been an complete idiot in the way he has gone about the whole issue. Who knows if it was really his idea or something that was concocted by Stretford? But as has been said, if he genuinely wanted out due to lack of assurance over the future squad then there is no question, for me, that those concerns are completely justified. If there was no reason to be concerned then there would be no green & gold and no LUHG.

I don't agree that he's dragged the name of the club through the mud. I can only see that the club and SAF have come out of this completely unscathed and with the utmost dignity. Rooney, however, obviously hasn't....and rightly so.

He certainly has a lot of making up to do. To the gaffer, the club and the fans. I for one will not boo him. I'd never do that to a player who still wears the shirt. Others most likely will....that's their perogative.

The legacy that this whole fiasco will most definitely leave behind though will be expectation. Expectation on Rooney himself to prove that he meant what he said when he said he wants to be here for life....as well as the expectation that his performances and future conduct will justify his new pay packet, whatever that may yet turn out to be.

Most of all there is now going to be a huge expectation from the fans (and the media) on the Glazers to make sure that the club can fulfil the assurances they have apparently given Rooney on the future state of the squad. Could this be the silver lining from this week's whole cloudy situation? As always, we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

It'll be water off a duck's back, to quote Fergie, if he comes back to form and everything goes on as usual. If he plays for us for a few more years, scores tons of goals and leads us to trophies, he'll be an Old Trafford legend, and these past few days will be nothing more than a sentence in the combined history of Wayne Rooney and Manchester United.

It's unfortunate that we've had to go through that this week, but it's over and I'd rather look to the future. I'd also like to trust the manager who we've all supporter this week. If he wants Rooney as part of his team, that's good enough for me.

I still think he'll be off in the summer. Probably just a gentlemans argeement which will mean we get his full value when he goes.
 
If the events of this week lead to an immediate improvement in form as he seeks redemption on the football field, at least some good will have come of all this where it matters

People didn't invent Rooney refusing to sign a contract in the summer, refusing to sign a contract only a few days ago, publicly questioning the ambition of Manchester United Football Club, releasing a statement further reiterating all of this, only hours before a game...
 
I honestly don't know what to think about all that.
It's a weird situation really.

On the other hand I'm as pissed off as before he signed a new deal, purely because of the way he has behaved, on the other hand I'm glad he has signed a new contract.

I have lost much respect for him, that's for sure.

People need to rationalise the effect of outside influences on this whole scenario. Outside of the key actors (SAF, the club & Rooney basically) how much influence has the Media, fans forums such as this one and that agent cnut had on the situation turning into the frenzy?

What a bizarre week, you could just not make this kind of stuff up without being called off your rocker.

Anyway, the bond between the fan and the player has broken for me and I dont know if it will ever be the same again.

Id love to know what really went on all this week, but I guess we will never ever get to know.

Indeed. Pretty much everyone* credible has turned round and said that Rooney would be a fool to leave. That has to have had a massive influence.

*Well, everyone except Paddy Evra. :lol:
 
Ancelotti is pretty like-able but Jose is most obviously going to be our next manager.
