League Cup, 5th Round
West Ham v Manchester United
30th November 2010, 19:45
Upton Park, London

Hello Upton Park!

Another game for Manchester United's youngsters in League Cup, which is an ideal place to gain some experience and say to two well-known people in football's world some words. To Fergie: "I'm feckin' ready" and to Mr. Florentino Perez: "I'll be your transfer priority in 2013". It's a competition where a lot of stars have been given a great chance to play for the first time at highest level in senior football (there was a Cockney back in 1992, you know).

What comes to my mind when I think 'West Ham'? Well... it's Freddie, Frodo, Ham, Hammer, Bubbles. No offence, I respect that club. They have a lot of passionate fans (yes, hard to believe, but Frodo really isn't their top supporter), a nice stadium with good atmosphere (that's really good we are away on Tuesday, lucky bastards those who travel there) and they have his seventh manager since 2001 (previous seven led the club not nine years but... 69. Don't think Avram wil remain there till 2070). To my mind comes also their shit form this season. Last position in the league isn't something they expected before start of the season (Avram is sad, he was in the European Cup final 30 months ago!). 2 wins, 6 draws and 7 losses is very bad result, so we can be sure they will fight for that win.

Let's smash them!

Kuszczak
Brown Evans Smalling Fabio
Fletcher Gibson Anderson Park
Hernandez Macheda

Why?

Van der Sar to rest, the same as our four defenders, don't think I need to explain it. Fletcher after an injury to find some minutes, Gibson, Anderson and Park are for me quite strong (and we'll have a fresh midfield - Nani, Carrick, Scholes, Giggs for Blackpool). Rooney with Berbatov are on a good form, but that's type of match for Hernandez and Macheda, let them play Fergie and have Rooney on the bench.

feckin' shit. We may have 11 different players in our line-up on Saturday if I am right. That's called a quality bench.

MANCHESTER: The English League Cup may not be top of everyone's priority list but for Manchester United defender Wes Brown it's helping extend his Old Trafford career.

The 31-year-old's contract with the English giants is due to expire at the end of the season and Brown, an ever-present in the League Cup this season, is eager to prove his worth again should he be selected by Sir Alex Ferguson for United's quarter-final away to Premier League rivals West Ham on Tuesday.

"I am not getting any younger now and every game I do play I just try to enjoy and do my best for the team," he said.

"You have to give everything for the cause. That is the most important thing for me," added Brown, who has lately been playing at full-back, where he started in the 2008 Champions League win over Chelsea, rather than in the centre of the defence.

"Staying focused is the most important thing when it comes to defending," he said.

"We do a lot of repetitive drills in training to help you do that.

"We have this thing called wave games, where we basically attack and defend, over and over again.

"It helps drill it into your head what you need to do in one-on-one situations."

United have won the League Cup for the past two seasons and although it lacks the prestige of the Champions League or Premier League, let alone the FA Cup, the Old Trafford club's record in the competition is a source of pride for midfielder Michael Carrick.

"We set standards here," said the England international.

"They have been set by different teams over the years and it carries on through each season.

"We want to try and reach those standards as often as possible.

"Sometimes you can't do it, but when it does comes together, like it did against Blackburn, (thrashed 7-1 in the league by United) on Saturday, you get the feeling you should be doing it more often.

I would like to see:

...........................Kuszcak........................
Brown.......Smalling....Evans...Fabio
Obertan...Gibson......Oshea.....Bebe
..............Macheda....Hernandez..........

Would like to see them getting more minutes on the pitch. Who cares about the League Cup anyway? Only Wenger, maybe.

I would too to be fair, but not all at once in a tricky away tie in a cup thats there for the taking. Theres not much mobility or creativity in a centre midfield of Gibson and O'Shea and i can't see Bebe playing from the start. I would expect Obertan to feature however.

West Ham will have no other choice but to rest players for the trip to Sunderland. They have to prioritise the League I guess. Our players are good enough to beat their mixture of researves and a few first teamers and without Parker. We can try playing Hernandez leading the midfield forward and supporting Macheda to add crativity to the middle of the park.

Good news. Parker is out :

West Ham talisman Scott Parker is out of Wednesday's Carling Cup quarter-final against Manchester United, along with five other key players.

Injuries rule out Valon Behrami and Danny Gabbidon, as well as long-term casualties Mark Noble and Manuel da Costa, while Lars Jacobsen is cup-tied

The league cup is a good chance to give fringe players a game but that doesn't suggest we should just throw any random midfield together just to give minutes, still should be a balanced team with a good chance of winning. May not be the biggest but it is still a cup and the only one we won last season.

A mix of (i) squad players #12-#18 & (ii)players who recently came back from injuries needing match time & (iii) youths who needs to be blooded in

--------------------------Ben Amos-------------------------

--Wes Brown--------Smalling------J.Evans------------Fabio--

--Obertan----------Gibson--------Anderson-----------Giggs--

-------------------Hernandez---Macheda---------------------

Subs: Kuzczak, O Shea, Eikrem, Bebe, Fletcher, Rooney, Berbatov

I personally hope it won't be Anderson and Gibson in a 2-man midfield. That combination has been a disaster pretty much every time it's been tried, as I remember.

Any chance of a surprise appearance by Hargreaves?

As long as we maintain a strong spine to the team we will be fine.

I really really don't wanna see O'Shea in midfield.

Any danger of this not going ahead due to the snow? id have thought West ham would have a decent under soil heating system to be honest, hope this isnt ruined by the shitty snow.

Travel safety will be a bigger problem. There's tons of snow coming down here and none of the roads are gritted.

Just read that Ravel Morrison is in the squad, let's hope he gets some playing time.

Yeah true is the forecast for heavy snow for the rest of the day or is it supposed to die down a little later on?

Considering the conditions at the Riverside for Middlesbroughs match at the weekend and the fact that still went ahead is encouraging.

Yeah, but they're probably prepared for it more up there.

All of the roads here are ice, andthe pavements will be the same way by the afternoon.

I wouldn't be that surprised if it was called off

Bugger, well fingers crossed, must say im of the thinking our game at Blackpool on Saturday isn't looking to rosy at the moment either, Blackpool don't have under soil heating and by all accounts the pitch is a mess right now, can easily see that one being under inspection to.

fecking snow, is amazing how this country almost goes into total meltdown due to a bit of shit weather when you think of what other country's deal with perfectly fine.

Not sure if this match will take place at all, it's fecking thundering down here at the moment:(

the state of the pitch will not make a differance , it will be fine , but the problem will be the roads and surrounding area , if it is really bad , the game could be CANX , this happened V City last year.
Hopefully it will go ahead.

I see you point , but you can salt and grit every road and pavement.
I thought PL club had to have undersoil heating .

We haven't had any snow really in Blackpool so far, it's just the ice that's worrying.

Wtf? Did they learn nothing from last year?

We were only supposed to get "light snow" until tonight, and at about 6am it wasn't looking that bad, but it bucketed down between 6-7 and has carried on since. I think it's caught them off guard.

Right now we have more snow on the ground here than we had at any point last year, and, no word of a lie, I was watching cars try and drive up the small hill near my flat this morning, and the heavier ones were all getting to a point and then sliding back down again

Anyone who drove into work has been at least an hour late, and at least two have had accidents on the way in.

The thing is, a lot of people going to the game later will be heading out from here, and the only train line is a mess at the moment - missus got into work but said everything going the other way is cancelled atm

No doubt they'll leave it until the last minute to make a decision as it's now stopped snowing....not sure what the forecast is for later mind.

Though I would have thought they'd have to make a decision pretty soon for the team's sake unless they travelled up last night

Game on

West Ham United's clash with Manchester United remains scheduled for this evening, despite the inclement weather conditions.

According to the club, the Carling Cup quarter final clash remains on despite worsening weather conditions that have seen the South East of England coated with a layer of snow overnight.

Ticket office staff were briefed at 9am this morning to inform supporters that the game is set to go ahead as scheduled, although that is still subject to change throughout the day.

The most recent first team fixture to be postponed as a result of adverse weather conditions was last January's Premier League clash with Wolves.

That particular fixture was cancelled due to 'health and safety concerns', despite the streets around the Boleyn Ground being almost entirely free of snow by the time the game was due to start.

I'm in London now and it's snowing hard, but the snow isn't settling.
Like someone said earlier though, it'll be more the transport problem than the pitch being unplayable.

If the game goes ahead and the trains don't sort themselves out, I'm going to cry.

If anyone has 2 tickets spare, I will happily take them! Im london based and so could collect anytime or meet at stadium at 7pm?

Please PM me if anyone can help!

I would imagine that road conditions will be fine as cars will have been driving all day and the grit should have kicked in.
