World Cup 2018 & 2022 bids

This isn't any other major tournament though. It's the biggest and most attended in the World. I'd worry they can cope with that many people...Not to mention whether it deserves it simply by virtue of being able to...I'd like to see them qualify for it first. It's a bit of a joke to have the tournament hosted by a team who's never played in it..it's like (as someone said above) moving the ashes to Dubai..

That said I think the fact it'll be good for the M.E as a whole is it's redeeming quality. ...aside from all the money.

In all honesty if they were going down the ME route then an emirates joint-bid would have been the most sound outcome - it tackles the space issue for one.

Come to think of it Iran would make a great host on paper, its got the stadiums, size, mild climate, :nervous:

By the looks of it Baltimore could also use those stadiums

Hey, Baltimore has this:

Ravens_Stadium.jpg

Which happens to be surrounded by a nice downtown area extending 4 blocks then about 10 miles of what looks like Calcutta.

How do they deserve it ? Because they haven't done it in the past ?

Let's give it to Afghanistan instead.

Russia is a footballing nation with millions of fans following the game for many decades, the biggest country in Europe. They played in the World Cup since 1958, won the European Football Championship in 1960 and reached the final in 1964,1972 and 1988.

Considering that a country like USA hosted the event in 2004, it's only fair that Russia will finally get to host the event.

In geographical terms it's both Europe and Asia. Either way there's no rule stopping China from bidding for 2024 is there?

At one time it wasn't considered to be in Europe, until a Swedish geographer came along. Not that it matters anyway....

They've got 2 more World Cups to try for. They might just go and buy the entire Nigerian youth set-up - that's how they got their steeplechase world champ.

Beeb got it wrong first time...

So basically, if anybody voted tactically to screw us over, it was Russia. And we then handed them our vote. Well done once again England.

Wondering this myself.

Qatar would let Israel take part in a World Cup on their territory despite not recognising the Jewish state, the head of the Persian Gulf nation’s bid to stage the 2022 event said. Israeli athletes had competed previously in Qatar, such as Israeli tennis player Shahar Pe'er in 2008, In addition to another Israeli that participated in the Doha 2010 Indoor Championships.

Far too close to Blatters Secret Moon Base in which he spends his free weekends, these of course being the weekends when he's not off clubbing baby Seals or chopping down trees in the Amazon.

Hey! I won't allow you to sully Canada's good name by associating Blatter with one of our proud traditions. You take it back.

You have to laugh!

No, considering their won't be a WC in 2024, there really isn't much point bidding for it.

As for 2026, China is not allowed to bid (under current rules), but said rules can be changed at Blatter's discretion.

Cool cheers for that.

Water-cooled airflow systems? Outbreak of Legionnaire's disease on the way...

World Cup usually occurs in summer. During this season in Qatar, the temperature can get to 40 degrees Celsius. But Qatar says that it will be able to pull this problem off its list. A section from Qatar 2022 Bid official site explains,

"Each of the five stadiums will harness the power of the suns rays to provide a cool environment for players and fans by converting solar energy into electricity that will then be used to cool both fans and players at the stadiums. When games are not taking place, the solar installations at the stadia will export energy onto the power grid. During matches, the stadia will draw energy from the grid. This is the basis for the stadiums’ carbon-neutrality. Along with the stadiums, we plan to make the cooling technologies we’ve developed available to other countries in hot climates, so that they too can host major sporting events."

Such cooling techniques will be able to reduce temperatures from 40 to 20 degrees Celsius, which would be comfortable for players and spectators during matches, the bid also proposes these cooling technologies to be used in fan-zones, training pitches and walkways between Metro stations & stadiums.[20]

In a couple of decades fish will be a rare commodity, look forward to Faroe Islands 2030, the next European bid. ;)

I meant 26 smart arse. Right that answers that then. So there's no point in us bidding for 2030 at all then either as I imagine China will fancy it. SO 2034 bid it is then. I'll be 58, my daughter will 32. Shit.

Pretty sure England voted for Holland/Belgium. What likely happened was the three-vote CONCACAF bloc switched to Russia.

...five stadiums?

Gotta laugh at all the hurt souls in this thread."Qatar shouldn't have got it !!"

Simply put they shouldn't have. Their bid is based on no real substance other than money. I'd have supported an Iran bid more.

Actually, currents rules rule China out of 2026 AND 2030.
