Anderson

If you think anyone at Manchester United would be allowed to get away with an attitude like that then you are extraordinarily naive. There is no issue with his desire, his match fitness will improve as he gets more of those thingies, erm, matches, that's it.

I really do hope that's the case. He's had 8 starts so far this season and so by this point, after a week's training and rest, I would personally be hoping to see some signs of improvement in his match fitness. There were none tonight. Same old Anderson.

Spot on. The defensive side of his game is very lazy. Maybe he is just unfit? Maybe he really is a natural attacking player?

He has a long way to go in any case.

He needs to do the simple things better. This is what he is poor at.

Wow. This is your stance after watching tonights match?

On that bombshell, I think I'll call it a night, dictators have less blatant agendas.

I think its fair comment to question his fitness levels in general, over the 3-4 years he's been here he hasn't lasted as many games as he probably should have. That being said, its also fair to say he's picked up a lot of injuries. So, rather than argue over who's right and who's wrong (frankly it could go either way), lets give the lad a chance and see how he kicks on this season now.

Well said.

I thought he has a fantastic engine tonight. Although he still is struggling to last the full 90, he's being more and more active in the 70 or so minutes he is at full pace.

Give him a run of 5 or 10 games and I'm sure he'll get up to 90 minute fitness.

Carrick is taking much of the blame for the goal conceded tonight but he had no options at the time and his midfield partner was standing still 20 yards up the pitch.

I think undoubtedly his best position is furthest forward in a central three because he then has two behind him doing the important midfield work and he can use his better attributes such as linking play and running with the ball. Although his lack of goals is a problem in that position and the fact that we rarely play three central midfielders. I'd be happy enough to start him there against Arsenal and Chelsea with Berba dropping out.

Many mentioning his fitness must have watched tonight, he did two mend running for 70 minutes and was repeatedly signalling to the bench.

He was completely fecked in the last 20 minutes. Trotted over to the bench to take on some water and then we were eventually able to get Fletcher on for the last few minutes.

As an attacking midfielder there's no-one in our team to touch him atm...bar Scholes. He's strong, a fighter, loves muscling players of the ball and makes some scitillating forward passes through defenders.

His fitness is slowly improving too, for the first two of his last 3 games he's worked tirelessly for the full match. He did seem to tire a bit today but that was most probabaly from excitement after the shock of scoring a goal...and a good goal at that.

He's going to come real good real soon is the lad.

Is that not what I said?

He ran for 2 men for 70 minutes making up for Carricks abysmal performance, in the last 20 he was shattered and was signalling repeatedly to come off.

It's such a shame his stamina is still shit, we know he won't start against Arsenal.

Even with Scholes injury it's probably Giggs or Park, not Anderson.

Just looking at the MOTM thread, literally every single person who's contributed has Anderson down as the best player tonight....everyone bar one individual....

Tells a story.

Yes, it tells us that nobody was paying attention for the last half hour of the match. I don't want to get in to a ''I was at the game and others were watching on TV'' type of argument but you really do see a hell of a lot more of the game when you're in the stands. Particularly the off the ball work, which is Anderson's real issue that he has to improve on.

He didn't though. Carrick was easily doing as much midfield work as Anderson for the first 65 minutes. And the good thing with Carrick is that he can last the full 90.

What do you mean, ''oh dear''?

This is the part of the problem with Anderson. He gets far too much credit for doing far too little.

I blame the dreadlocks, the cool name, and the cute chubby face.

Are you joking? the lad puts in a top level display today and scores a vital goal to ensure a howler from Carrick didn't end up costing us top of the group (last season Carrick cost us our champions league campaign), he also ran the midfield wonderfully well and by everyone's consensus was comfortably our best player tonight, yet even when he does all that there's still people such as yourself who are determined to run him down over the slightest thing possible, he tired in the last 20 minutes big deal, that happens when you've been out for most of the year and only started playing regularly 10 days ago.

Far from getting to much praise it seems your not allowed to praise the lad on here at times, if he doesn't deserve praise for that performance he might as well not bother.

The match was played at a ridiculous tempo with Anderson at the heart of it, given the fact he's only just got back to playing regularly it's hardly a shocking revelation that he faded.

I'd take 70 minutes of drive and attacking threat than 90 minutes of the shite Fletcher has been tossing up this season.

Bingo.

Scholes or Fletcher would have given him an option. Anderson was trotting around way up the pitch. Whether it was due to poor fitness, laziness, or general naivety I'm not so sure.

Sorry, it can't be a top level display if the player in question goes a long way to contributing to us very nearly losing the game. I'm not making this up, we were getting shat on for 15-20 minutes after the equaliser and Anderson was particularly at fault because he wasn't tracking runs and he wasn't putting pressure on the man in possession.

Having said that, he did link play very well at times, made a few penetrative runs foward and scored the goal. So overall, a decent performance but with a great deal of room for improvement.

Because he visibly faded physically in the last 20 minutes, due to having hardly played throughout the calender year due to serious injury and more recently being laid low with a virus, its not surprising really, he was doing so much running from box to box for the first hour his stamina left him in the final stages and he was as expected replaced as a result.

You have to remember he only came into the team and started a game 10 days ago.

He showed great stamina by taking a punch on the chin from Rooney after he scored yet still managed to samba dance with a smile on his face after!

This!

After an excellent performance like that, people are picking on something like his fitness level in the last 15 mins of the game. It's just ridiculous! lol

Try watching the replay. He had Vidic and Ferdinand and Amos to pass to but he chose to take that extra touch towards a blind spot where a Valencia man pressured him and intercepted the pass. He also didn't sprint to the rescue like you'd see so many other players do. In fact he didn't sprint until he saw Pablo on a run and then it was too late.

Manchester United 1 - Valencia 1
Freeze it at 16 seconds. Look at his options. He also had an option in midfield.
Totally his feckup and he'll be the first to tell you that.

I agree, he is always looking to move the ball to the forwards anyway, it makes a lot of his Hollywood passes more tenable and with much better results. I also like his pace, he is good at running with the ball and is a competent dribbler so I have no problem seeing him with the ball in space. I think his shooting will improve or at least he will score more if he plays in an am role, not many goals mind you but a bit more than past returns...

Carrick should have taken note of him after he turned it over as he did look in his direction. The problem with what Carrick did was he didnt defend, he just aimlessly ran back with his thumb up his ass. Then he see Hernandez and it is too late by then. Carrick had a decent game though, that was a very poor play all around by him though.

I love the fact he can beat a player in midfield with his electrifying pace and cause all sorts of dramas cause the opposition need to send a defender which opens up all sorts of gaps for out front four.

We've never really had a midfielder like that, except when Giggs has played in their from time to time.

I think he's a magic player and by all accounts he's hung like a horse, abeit it hangs with a very pronounced bend in it. Good to see we've finally replaced Yorke on that front.

Don't know about you guys, I woke up a bit late as it was 3:00 A:M in Thailand, and Jesus, I was amazed by Anderson.

Valencia had a really packed MF with lots of pressure but he just took it with ease, brought the ball forward with lots of confidence and I could hardly recall him playing the wrong pass at all ( A few through balls which failed, but if not would have lead to a clear chance ).

Also, there was a Scholes-esque pass to Nani which was like 50 yards away, if only Nani wasn't offside, that would have been pass of the match.

We were calling out for a creative MF incase Scholes didn't play, Anderson certainly satisfied my needs for the word creativity. What more could we really ask for ?

Stamina will certainly come and we've seen Anderson can run 90 mins, in his debut season, that is after he had a run of around 5-10 games. Give the lad some time.

I enjoyed his performance tonight, he adds a dimension to our side and while there are still areas of his game to work on the overall feeling from the last 3 starts as been a very positive one in my view.

Anderson plays better in CM though. Playing behind the striker, with 2 midfielders behind him occupies(sp?) extra space, and we all know that positional awareness isnt his greatest strength. This also means he isnt able to go on driving runs and burst passed the opposition midfield, as he's already one of the furthest forward.

Some fabulous through balls tonight btw.
