So How do Liverpool lineup

From a team under Roy:

Reina,
Carra, Skrtel, Kyriagos, Konchesky,
Lucas, Poulsen,
Miereles Gerrard Jovanovic
Ngog / stroppy-Torres

To:

Reina,
Kelly, Carra, Agger, GJ,
Lucas, Miereles,
Kuyt Gerrard Suarez
Carroll

At a net cost of £15 million. I'd say we're looking better in the same formation than we were at xmas. Lots of donkeys removed in one fell swoop.

I honestly don't think it's a question of displacement. I think Kenny simply decided that he is not just a rightback but a fullback for both flanks.

Kelly does look very promising, but I think the competition he will be facing is from Aurelio. Johnson will play when fit. What flank comes down to who is doing better (largely hypothetical with Aurelio always injured) of Kelly and Fabio. With Konchesky and Kelly as the options, that was a no-brainer.

Tbh, with carra out, I wouldn't mind Kelly displacing Skretl in the centre if Aurelio is fit. He has been abysmal.

Kelly has got a surprisingly good cross and loves running in behind. As long as he can get forward with Kuyt drawing inwards we should get just enough crosses.

Glen on the other side has a sweeter left foot than I thought. Should see a few crosses coming in that side too. Both Glen and Kelly will need to be marked throughout matches which effectively puts teams on the back foot allowing the likes of Miereles/Gerrard/Suarez time and space to do their thangs.

Something like that for the tougher games, maybe Maxi Rodríguez would still start out wider, Lucas / Meireles wouldn't get in, Gerrard would be deeper and Suárez / Kuyt would be behind Carroll. Agger might get the left back slot quite often, but we all know he doesn't want to play there. Otherwise:

Kuyt Meireles Gerrard Rodríguez

Joe Cole will get in every now and then, but I think he's looking at playing left wing all the time now (when not warming the bench). Personally, I think that's where his best performances have come from even though most people think he's the type of player who should play 'in the hole'.

If Johnson starts performing maybe he'll get the Right Back slot again or even Left Back. Or, he could potentially be turned into a winger, though that could mean leaving the likes of Kuyt on the bench. Poulsen hasn't impressed, I think he'll be a back-up central midfielder like Lucas was when Liverpool still had Mascherano and Alonso. N'Gog is the other bench warmer who's still developing but looks okay.

It doesn't look too bad for Liverpool despite losing three top players in recent seasons, but I'm not sure if it'll be enough to challenge for a Champions League spot next season.

Agger will start ahead of Skretl. The former has been carrying the latter since his return. Skretl is a wreck at the moment.

And Johnson has begun performing. He will start under Dalglish, whether at rb or lb.

Also reckon Lucas has the holding role sewn up regardless of who else plays in midfield.

Dalglish will be looking to recreate the style he used in his first stint with Caroll as the Aldridge figure, Suarez as the Beardsley role and Gerrard playing like Ray Houghton - and advanced midfielder. He just needs a Barnes type now but I guess Kuyt or Maxi will fill that until the Summer.

(I might be completely and utterly wrong about this - it's just something I thought when trying to understand his rationale for the transfers)

No you're not wrong Crust, that has been mentioned to him and by him a few times.

We may be putting an (over the top?) bid for Ashley in the summer as well after seeing what else is missing from now 'til then. And obviously some CBs but that's boring.

They don't quite have the width to make full use of Carroll's aerial ability, thankfully. Not sure if Daglish will force a 4-4-2, or try a 4-3-3 to make better use of the players he currently has.

Pretty sure they'll go hunting for wingers in the summer.

I would go...

--------------------Reina-------------

Kelly----Carragher----Agger-----Johnson

----------------Meireles---------------

Kuyt------------Gerrard-----------Maxi

---------Carroll--------Suarez--------

They still lack decent wingers but it's better than having one decent forward.

That defence will be exposed to penetration more than a prozzies snatch

Thats why I see Gerrard pushed onto the wing again. That way they continue with Lucas holding and Meireles pushing on, and Maxi can continue on the other wing. Kuyt misses out which isnt the worst thing in the world

--------------------Reina

Kelly----Carragher----Agger-----Johnson

------Lucas---------------Meireles----
--------------Gerrard
----Kuyt------------------Suarez
---------------Carroll

something like that i would go for. remains to be seen if suarez can play wide properly, if he cant then they are gonna have to go with a pretty narrow and shite 4-4-2. laughable that they havent got any proper wingers still.
