Manchester United vs. Marseille

They've moved Mbia back into midfield, haven't they? He's a big, strong unit. Think I'd rather Heinze at full-back and him pulled back into defence tbh.

It's an interesting one - Mbia's certainly better at centre back and Heinze's arguably better at left back, it gives them a bit more bite and presence in the middle and leaves them less exposed against pace but I think it definitely weakens the centre of their defence.

He is huge but the player they took out in place of him is hardly small, and Lucho and Cheyrou are a bit lightweight in that sense - talented passers but not very adept at grafting or imposing their presence when they're up against it, which I'd assume they will for a lot of it.

Carrick, Giggs and Scholes could easily help us dominate the midfield and if they do those two might be overworked. It's a more attacking line-up from Marseille really, I'm surprised.

Taiwo's very hit and miss too, which could easily go our way.

Scholesy we don't have the midfield strength to compensate for the absence of Vidic, Rio and to still gamble on playing such an attack-minded inconsistent full-back like Rafael especially in such an foward thinking lineup in other areas of the pitch O'Shea is a sensible choice and if we need to go turbo mode, I'm sure Fergie won't hesitate to being him on. Chilax.

Rafael won't come on, things like that never happen.

I understand this is a high important match, and we are at risk with the away goal rule. But we have better attacking players than Marseille and a better defence and goalkeeper. Why not show this and pick Rafael, who can defend also, and dominate the match.

Love that people can foresee us going out based on a fecking team sheet. Spastics the lot of you.

.... So If dundees Duncan goodwilly joins marseille I can imagine the commentator now ...
So its goodwilly on to Fanni .... Bah hah hah ...

Seriously though I've no qualms about defence tonight I think wes is a good player and jj is a cracking young centre back.
If he keeps on at his current rate he'll be first choice soon enough!!

Poor Berba

The problem is the moment SAF picked Giggs/ Carrick/ Scholes in midfield Berba was not going to play as we played with the same 3 against Pool and we got over powered. He is going to play Hernandez to push their defence back.

Carlton Palmer claims fergie told rio at the start of the season he wont be talking about a new contract because he is injury prone and he might be shipped out at the end of the season..
why the feck would he offered a new contract in the summer of 2010 when he has a contract till 2013 :/

I hate it when rubbish 'pundits' pretend to be Itk.

Like against Liverpool?

Marseille are set up for the fast break and to push us hard on set pieces they defend very well.

Am I the only one on this site who's noticed that Rafael's form has dropped noticeably since his concussion? I've mentioned it quite a few times in a few different discussions, but I've yet so see anyone else mention it or agree with me (or disagree for that matter).

How the hell can Carlton Palmer know that?

I can only see us winning this game if Marseille do not try to force us on the back foot as our midfield will crumble.

If Marseille as expected come to play on the counter and leave us with more possession we might have a chance but the midfield need to put in a performance.

He was pants against Liverpool but played well at the weekend I thought.

He was bound to have a dip in form at some point anyway. He's still just a kid.

Rooney sat on fanny all night. he stuck to fanny all night. didnt let him have a sniff

ten sports

actually I think he has not played much since....not sure it is for teh reason you suggest.

hope not :nervous:

what utter bollocks

So Nani, Rooney and Hernandez. Pretty fast front 3. Looks like we're giving them the central midfield and possession (which is logical since we're kinda pants there) and hope to hit them on a counter.

Liverpool played Meireles, Gerrard and Lucas - they're considerably more combative and difficult to bypass than their midfield three. We're in danger of being outplayed with that midfield more than overpowered, I feel.

You've seen a lot of Marseille and how they set up according to different threats or are you just making an general observation that goes along with a(n unsurprisingly) pessimistic viewpoint?

Rafael has to play, everytime, he is a superb player. Barcelona wouldn't drop Alves if they had O'Shea and I want us to be like Barcelona.

Anyway, I am very happy with the line up overall.

Everyone is so relieved to hear that. Thank You!

Steve McClaren...

'I don't know if Evra can speak English'

Nish one Shteve.

Why is Berbatov on the bench again

Because we need a bit of energy considering our midfield is not too quick young except Nani.

And Rooney and Hernandez have formed a good partnership recently.

Berbatov hasn't scored in the CL for long.

Hopefully Fanni won't go in hard on Punani's barely stitched Gash.. forget the magic sponge, we'll be needing sanitary towels.

Vidic is a loss but there's no reason to panic, yet. Our defence is good enough but really it's up to our attack to win us this game. I hope we will spend more time on the front foot than them, to ensure the pressure on our back 4 is minimal.

We've got good pace and movement up there. Let's rip them to pieces tonight.

They are a physical bruising side - not very technical but strong and fast - its why I was surprised Hernandez started as I expect them to deal with his pace. Against berba they would just end up fouling him.

If I did play Berba I would drop Scholes and play Giggs in the centre and Rafael out wide - currently Giggs/ Scholes / Carrick combo do not fill me with confidence especially in front of our 2 centrebacks.

FWIW I would have gone with Berba to start.
