Luka Modric / Signs for Real Madrid

Scholes and Carrick haven't notched up many assists either in the last seasons.

They probably have dozens of assists to assists though. How many great passes have the likes of Berba, Scholes and Carrick played to Valencia, Nani and Ronaldo on the wings over the years, only for them to put in a cross or a pass to get a goal.

I reckon that is what Modric would be doing for us as well. We play down the wings, and we need central midfielders who are good at getting the ball to our wingers in good positions.

Has there been anything even remotely tangible/reliable linking him to United apart from him being a relatively obvious like for like replacement for Scholes?

SAF said a week ago that Modric was his player of the season I think.

So who is buying them for £40 million?

Plenty of good passes. But do central midfielders who get more assists not play lots of good passes to wingers as well? If you're paying top dollar for a player they should be doing as the best in their position do. Else they arent worth those huge fees and wont be until they add it to their game.

Yes.

The first letter of his surname ('M') is also the first letter of 'Manchester' .... that's about as rock solid as it gets.

That and our (M)anager praising the shite out of him a few weeks back.

A source told the News of the World the former Dinamo Zagreb star is ready to consider a transfer.
'Luka has enjoyed his time at Spurs but he has had a taste of Champions League football and he wants more of it,' the insider said.
'There are no guarantees Tottenham will qualify on a regular basis and he would listen to offers from any club that can offer those guarantees.'
Should Modric confirm he is interested in a move, Manchester City are also likely to join the race for his signature.

But, won't Fletch be back? I mean, for the midfield holding role.
De Rossi is not really that creative, is he?

I personally think our need for another DM is more pressing than a creative midfielder.

I'd go with him for sure. Top young player. Pure "box to box" as it's called.

And M'vila too.

Both of them for the price of Modric.

I think Defour has just signed a new contract, that means nothing these days though.

Other than increasing the transfer fee of course.

He's shit anyway. Don't know why people keep mentioning him you guys don't even watch him play. It's like years ago when people kept mentioning Halmstaed because he said he was a United fan...

Modric would be my dream signing this year, even ahead of the likes of Sneijder and Sanchez.

Do it!

If he was 'shit' we wouldn't waste our time by keep sending scouts to watch him.

More likely to cost £35 million. It wouldn't suprise me if we tried to offer cash + Berbatov.

Tbf, this may be the summer, value goes out the window and we get our men at all costs.

It's not just about looking to get, at the very worst, reasonable value for money. The other considerable argument against paying crazy fees is that it creates a millstone around the neck of the player. The expectations on Modric would be ridiculous and the vast majority of players aren't like Ronaldo, who probably felt rather insulted that Madrid only paid £80m for him.

Myth. With the right man management, the price of the player shouldnt effect the player at all. The player has nothing to do with the price the club paid for him.

It's not a myth at all. When you sign a player for a ludicrous fee, who is expected to make an immediate impact in the first team of one of the world's biggest clubs, then more often than not it will have some effect. Berba might has well have had ''£30.75m'' tattooed onto his forehead since the day he joined us.

We are not going to sell Berbatov. If we do, then we most definitely have to sign a striker. We cannot expect Rooney or Hernandez to lead to line every week. They need a rest. Owen if he stays is injury prone.

Not so sure if Berba is definitely going to stay. If reports of him isolating himself from the rest of the team prove to be true then he'll be shown the door like Ruud was. Him leaving would not necessarily mean us signing another striker but it would be a bit of a gamble to have Owen, Welbeck & Kiko as the reserve strikers.

If it is decided he should be moved on then I can see us try to offer him in any deal to sign Modric.

According to one Guardian journalist, Berba wasn't even at the club's post-match function.

What doesn't make sense? Modric is not a winger...

£15m for a good player who's out of contract in a year like Young, vs £20m for an excellent player at a top 5 club (who enjoy taking us to the cleaners) with years on his contract like Modric...I believe this may have been his point.

A fair one too, but both fees have been forcibly removed from the journos anus anyway so meh.
