Luka Modric / Signs for Real Madrid

So who is most disappointed about this, us United fans or Glaston?

With Fergie naming him as his player of the year, repeatedly speaking of his admiration for him, and Modric clearly stating he wants out, I'm expecting a bid. Several players before have spoken of clubs as if it looks certain they will only join them, such as Silva last summer, before signing for another club. Perhaps the interviewer only asked about Chelsea as only they have bid, or maybe he spoke of them only for the same reason. At least give him an alternative.

depends how it plays out, if he does go to Cheski and we end up signing no central midfielder I think we'll be the most disappointed. However if he goes and we sign Sneijder or Nasri I think Glaston will be the most disappointed.

I'll probably be made to regret this but I honestly don't see the 'wank fest' over Modric. He's good but nowhere near the 'world class' £30 million+ player. I honestly would think our money is spent elsewhere.

I'm not even slightly disappointed. A little pleased even. I'm not at all sure he's what we need, I'm not sure he's what Chelsea need either and they are going to have to pay very big money if they want him.

The most shocking aspect in all this is Chelsea being described as one of the best clubs in the world.

did you just make that up?

Dont play with my emotions like this... :(

That quote? nope

Luka Modric reveals he wants to leave Tottenham for Chelsea | Football | The Guardian

It was just conveniently left out of the mail article

Sounds like Luka does fancy another option to come in if possible. It reads to me as "they are the other ones who have made an offer and are currently my first choice, however.... should Madrid, Barca or United come in for me and I'll re-evaluate that first choice"

Absolutelt exhilarated we're not signing him. Close thread, delighted.

He's a tidy little player and would improve us greatly but I think Players like Sneijder or Nasri would have a better impact on us and uplift the players and fans more. Hopefully SAF is thinking the same thing.

Cant understand this. He's exactly the type of player we need and yet people are glad we're not signing him?

Oh but when it comes to Sanchez everyone is threatening mass suicide

People don't want him because of the pricetag... In reality, a 25m would be a max bid anyone would go for Modric but insane numbers like 40m have been mentioned etc...

Not to mention Glaston trying to say Levy/Harry has the cash, doesn't need to sell... and with better players out there... This could pave way to many other exciting prospects.

Are either Sneijder or Nasri suited better to our normal 2 man midfield though?

Yes!

The same nonsense was said about Modric for ages, "he can't play in a 2 man midfield" and it was tosh.

I've seen both Sneijder and Nasri play centre mid and they both can, and hey, if Ryan flying winger Giggs can!

Sneijder, Nasri and Modric are all very good players but I'm not sure any of them really fit what we need the most if we are to sign one midfielder.

I think we should be looking for a Keane, Ince or Robson type signing if at all possible. Not many of that type around but the right player is out there somewhere.

No, but you never know with Fergie he might be looking to change the formation again. I don't think Modric is suited to Chelsea's formation but they seem to want him anyway too.

I think we need a better ball player and these fit the bill. I'd obviously be delighted if we bought both a ballplayer and a general, that would be the ultimate.

As much I'd like the lot of them over here, we very rarely pick up young midfielders from the Iberian peninsula. Can you see us going for any of them? Sadly, I can't.

I wouldn't be too surprised if we made a move for someone like Martinez, to be honest. 2 of the most successful midfielders in modern Premiership history are Spanish and we've had our arses handed to us by Spanish midfielders twice in the last 3 seasons. Internationally, Spain are now what France were a decade ago. Simply put, the quality of players produced in Spain is currently unrivaled. But, obviously, you're right about us historically not buying a lot of Spaniards.

Modric is a player I have followed for some time and I will be so disappointed and fearful if he goes to Chelsea. He is a superb player and would be the dream signing for us.

De Rossi? We still need more imagination in the final third which is why i feel Sneijder and Nasri are key.

Can't see us changing formation. We always have two wide men and can't see Fergie dropping Rooney/Hernandez.

Surely fans should only ever be concerned about price (if ever) should the money be spent on players that the team doesn't need like I dont know another defender and another winger.....

Surely the potential of more league titles and possibly champions league titles with a much improved midfield (which Modric would make us have) is worth whatever money we're willing to spend?

In a world where Liverpool are spending 35m on Carroll whether we all take the piss out of them for doing so or not Modric is easily worth 40m

When have you seen Nasri in a 2 man midfield, because Arsenal sure as hell don't play with only 2 in there, and Sneijder's best form has been playing in a similar position for club and country as Rooney.

Modric hasn't stepped up to the top level yet. He's definitely capable of doing so though.

You (and not just you but many others here) speak as if we always played the very same formation. All the time. There will be rotation. There will be different tactical approaches to different opponents.

And if Darron Gibson was trusted to play in a two-man midfield (or really, to play at all) I can't see why Wesley Sneijder or Samir Nasri couldn't hack it against the likes of Stoke or Newcastle. The obsession with two-man midfields here has, quite frankly, reached ludicrous levels now.

By all accounts he was part of a 2 man midfield against England and ran the game

2 man, 3 man, so what, he played as the deeper midfielder and excelled there, that's all that matters. He wouldn't have a problem playing alongside Carrick in a 2, as I said, Giggsy can do it despite spending 50 odd years playing as a flying left winger. Pretty certain he played centre mid in a 2 vs England too or?

I loved Sneijder at Madrid playing in a 2.

I would be happy if we paid £35m for him. In todays market that is a fair price as far as im concerned (not that it is my money). More than that starts to become somewhat excessive, although for me he is the best fit to bring in to our midfield - that in itself drives the price up.

In reality they would have never spent that if they wasn't desperate and had £50m for Torres. Chelsea spent £50m on one player but still don't think Modric is worth £40m so i wouldn't read into that. He's worth £25-30m tops

These types of players are very rarely existent in the modern game.

The goal is to have a disciplined and technically sound midfield. They will not score many goals, but they will provide excellent support for the defence and retain possession. Modric would be ideal alongside Carrick.

Carrick is a superb modern holding midfielder, similar to Busquets.

It is impossible and unfair for us to try to replicate the play of Xavi and Iniesta, but Modric is a very interesting player whose style is almost a hybrid of the two.

Ok ignore Carroll what about Henderson? 20m for him? You telling me Modric is only 5-10m better? Course he's not, he's on another level to Henderson

Carrick is good but not as good as Busquets and we don't play like barca do. Modric with Carrick would be okay but a midfield opponents would fancy getting at I think.

Its quite harsh, but in reality we never do go into bidding wars unless we had a prime target... IF our prime target for example Modric wants to stay in London... Paying even 50m wouldn't change the fact that he doesn't want to come to us...

Lets move on.

Modric is a great player, however... There are better players out there who are capable of becoming an even better player than Modric.

We don't need a really big name signing who needs to use up a first team spot ( right away that is ), we can easily sign a good prospect and as SAF says we do well with youngsters, then lets keep doing what we are good at.
