Abdul Rahman Baba

I'd be happy if he moves to Roma. Good step up in class from Augsburg and will most likely be a starter since Roma don't have a left back.
A move to Chelsea now will stagnate his development.
What happened to Cashley?

So hes going to rot on the bench like Felipe Luis then, good on ya lad

We'll see what happens, I rate him as one of the best fullbacks in Europe so it'll be interesting to see how he does at Chelsea given that Jose is meant to rate him highly. Looks like it will be a big bid too. around 30m euros.

They paid quite a big fee for Felipe Luis, and Azspi is also highly rated.

Different paying big money for a proven player like Luis. Paying 25m euros for a 20 year old is a big risk if he's not going to play any football. Personally I think it will take time but he'll break through at Chelsea this season.

Surprised it's taking so long.

Chelsea always get their business done so quickly and efficiently dont you know.

As for the player though, will Chelsea be looking to start phasing Ivanovic out, moving Azpi to RB and starting this guy? Ivanovic really looked like he was starting to struggle at fullback yesterday.

Yes that's what I thought too when I heard Chelsea were going for him. Ivanovic is not getting any younger and he's been exposed a few times now due to his lack of pace and attacking. Them losing to Swansea probably sped this up so Mourinho has better depth at the fullback positions especially with Luis leaving.

But I don't expect him to start anytime soon. I imagine Mourinho will try Ivanovic out for a few more games first as Montero was superb.

Ivanovic just had a poor game against a speed deamon, he wasn't getting much help at first from his midfield either.
However we're talking about one of the best RBs and defenders in the league, the vice captain, he ain't getting dropped.

Terry and Cahill were also very poor.

This guy will be warming the bench like Kurt Zouma

I do think that there is a possibility of Rahman playing als LB, Azpi as RB and Ivanovic rather playing as a CB with Terry getting some breaks from time to time.

He won't get in ahead of Azpi, unless Azpi will switch to RB and Ivanovic is shown the bench.

Done deal according to Stefan Reuter, Augsburg's director of football. He passed the medical and just needs to sign the contract now. He said his goodbuys to the team today after the Bundesliga match.

Wasn't Augsburg's entire season budget something like 28mil?
Fantastic piece of business. Lets hope they use the money wisely.

With Ivanovics poor start to the season he could be pushed into the starting lineup almost straight away. He'll be dynamite though, exciting player.

Never seen him play. What are his strengths? Offensively or defensively strong? Maybe a palyer he reminds you of?

His defensive play is very good and his strongest asset. Excellent tackler (his best attribute i'd say), strong in the air, good interception very pacey. His attacking play isn't as good but he's good at crossing and likes to dribble so combine that with his pace and you've got a player that will cause the opponent problems.

As for similar players... I guess he's a bit like Shaw except he's stronger in the air and better going forward. But he's also a year older than Shaw. Mourinho will love him though because he's a proper athlete, big strong build, pacey, runs everywhere, big game player.

Sounds good. So will probably be a starter sooner or later for them. Will be interesting to see if Azpi or Ivanovic go to the bench.

My bet would be on Ivanovic. Azpi has pace and is a terrific defender.

Sounds like good business for Chelsea then? But will Baba be first team or more likely to be a squad player?

That's the magic question, I imagine he'll be used like Zouma initially. But depends on Ivanovics form and whether Mourinho might use Baba to give the squad a kick up the arse.

Good player, the transfer sum seems to high for me although in todays market it's propably the normal price you have to pay for talented players.
I think the move may be a bit too early after "only" one really good season but to be honest, I thought the same after Carvajal went back from his loan to Madrid after a great season with Leverkusen but he had no problems at all and immidiately became a starter for Real.
Lets see if Baba can do the same, the timing of his transfer might be perfect for him with Chelsea struggling right now and Mourinho looking to be ready to bench a few players of his starting squad - especially after Ivanovic had a hard time now twice in a row against quick wingers.

He is a very talented and well round full-back. He can do a job at both ends. I am just a bit worried, that he is too attacking for Jose. Azpilicueta isn´t going forward at all and only covers for Hazard. It would be a shame, if he doesn´t play.

I would love him to start next game directly and shift Ivan to cb and Azpi to rb.

He is so poor defensively.

I've never quite understood the hype and thought it's mental how much Chelsea paid for him, but he's nowhere near as bad as he looks so far this season. He made the step to a big club too early and chose the worst big club to be at this season on top.

He was clearly a much better leftback than Christian Fuchs last season for example, yet Fuchs looks quality for Leicester in a well organised team this season while Baba looks completely lost. It's really difficult to judge him so far. I hope he can make it longterm and won't regret the move. He showed enough to be considered a great talent.

He was still quite raw, when he joined Chelsea (1,5 in the 1. divisions and one in the 2nd division). Chelsea is a big step up and are in a state of chaos. It is always difficult for new players to establish themselves in a dysfunctional team. Additionally Jose managed him poorly.
