Alex Salmond and Independence

Not enough for Glasgow and I expected a better turnout. Unlikely that Scotland will become independent. A comfortable win for No.

It's done.

Turning down independence must be a very strange experience for a country. It'll be interesting to see what happens next, though nowhere near as entertaining for outsiders as a yes vote would've been.

Do people really expect there to be a fundamental shift in the relationship between Scotland and the rest of the UK now? Or will this basically result in a few surface changes while the balance of power essentially remains the same?

The campaign is over and Nicola Sturgeon still can't answer a straight question.

Will you sit and work with Westminster to thrash out a devolution deal or will you wait for an offer then react?

Cue a minute of vague dancing around the question.

The yes campaign in a nutshell.

A bit unfair, she can hardly decide that on the fly.

The Yes campaign is already coming with excuses such as "The establishment!!", the media, Westminster, the supermakets!!!

She wouldn't have to decide that there and then; I'd be very surprised if that plan hasn't already been made. But it was probably a bit unfair, I'm sure a statement like that will be part of Salmond's first speech in the morning and if nothing else she was probably not aloud to make that announcement.

It's too late/early. I'm off to bed.

Night night x x x

Slightly disappointed that Cameron buckled and promised more devolution at the last minute. Just means us English tax payers will see more of our money go north of the border, to prop up the Scots even more than we do.

Public spending higher in Scotland than in England, free university tuition, free prescriptions, free long term elderly care and one of the biggest welfare bills in the EU. The Scots had £1600 per person more than us English. All propped us by English taxes, kind of almost wish they got independence....

The poorest and most disadvantaged people in our society voted to leave the union. The third largest city in the UK voted to leave the union. Our country will never be the same again politically.

Hope the English will at least get a parliament out of all of this.

Looking like a no vote to claim victory. Though it's not a 'No' vote in its truest sense because even the no vote wields much change down the line from Westminster.

A side note - let's hope the people react well whichever way it goes. In today's world it's becoming increasingly rare to see any reform done so in a peaceful and respectful manner. Scotland should be proud of its people.

Now it's official, how do our Scottish posters feel?

Promises were made so Westminster will be granting more freedom down the line but is it enough to satisfy the people just yet.

The Fat Controller has slunk away and left Nicola Sturgeon to deal with the media. Yesterday he was all over it, now he's a hermit.

Not even man enough to face the music. Some leader!

Not cut and dried about what new powers there will be. English MPs are rightly pissed off about these carrots being thrown around willy-nilly by Cameron et al.

There will need to be something in this for everyone, not just Scotland. English people are starting to get fed up with Scots getting preferential treatment.

Many countries in Europe has this same situation. The Northern Italy cities has to pay for Sicily inefficient and often corrupt administration. The Bavarians have to do the same with the poorer regions in Germany hell even us Maltese have to fork money to the Gozitans who produce little, strive in black economy and shame us in front of tourists with their three tier prices (Gozitan, Maltese and Foreign). Its quite a shame that piracy has stopped in our part of world because they used to do us quite a favor in taking some of them off our backs.

The only difference is that the Brits are probably the only one happy to carry the burden. If the Maltese/Italians were given the choice then we would probably have given it to them immediately and would be followed by probably a year of celebrations.

Absolutely. I live close to the Welsh boarder and that's all they're talking about. Mind you, historically speaking they've learnt the hard way about what Conservative governments can give, and more importantly, take away.

Good point though, NI, W and E all have a right to voice their opinion on this and what liberties aare granted now it's confirmed a 'No' vote. Miliband will no doubt use it as vote bait as soon as the dust settles.

The thing that pisses me off about that kind of talk from these people is that it assumes that Scots voting No can't have done it for any good reason - it must be because they were manipulated by Westminster, the Media, the Illuminati etc. Sort of carrying on from the whole Team Scotland vs Team Westminster shite, very exclusionary and divisive discourse.

Thank God, and thank you Scotland for saving our country. :D

Good to hear we are going to look at bringing in measures to block scottish MPs voting on English and Welsh matters as well.

What the extent of this result shows is that the "Undecided" voters before the referendum weren't actually undecided - they were No voters who were cowed into silence by the disgraceful behaviour of a large number of Yes supporters who would scream down any opposition. They just sat and waited then delivered their killer blow. Good on them.

It would be fascinating to see the demigraphic info of the votes too ie ages, statuses, employment sectors, etc.

It's the correct decision, as much as I can understand why Scotland wanted independance (and it will happen some day) now wasn't the right time. Salmond and the SNP made a mess of the whole thing, by not being able to answer the most important issue for the voters then he was never going to get the full backing of the people.

Absolutely, and Cameron has just said he's going to address the West Lothian question. He now has the perfect opportunity to do that.
