Sorry if old but I just saw this and it boiled my blood. Dude throws a rock, runs away, decides to stop and surrender and he gets executed. Washington Police chief said it was justified.
 
The family have filed a $25m dollar law suit against the city.

America in a nutshell: guns and law suits.
 


57 year old Indian Citizen out for a walk after coming over to look after his grandson. Police determined he couldn't understand a word of English, then when he didn't respond to their questions - because he couldn't understand English - they responded appropriately and slammed him into the pavement, paralysing him.
 
I've never been and realise this is a gross generalisation, but Alabama scares the shit out of me.

I saw this earlier today and was horrified. It is absolutely disgusting what the police get away with in the USA. There's been one arrest in this which is ridiculous.

The Latest episode of This American Life podcast is worth listening to. The way these cops treat non-White people is disgusting. Fecking racist monsters.

I'm sickened by that. The man was clearly unarmed and running away then turned with his hands clearly in the air. What fecking part of that is justified?

So far in recent months you can get shot for being a parent, shot in a supermarket, shot by the Police for anything they feel like shooting you for (especially if you are a person of colour) you can get shot by a rent a cop on neighbourhood watch, you can get shot for throwing stones, shot teaching kids how to use guns safely (oh the irony) and you can get shot for taking a parking space..................... and on and on and on and on. Yet it's not GUNS that are the problem? Some believe that guns aren't even part of the problem. The mind boggles.

It seems in the US they are training the police to be soldiers rather than actual police men/women. Although this doesn't excuse what happened here.
 
Honestly, he shouldn't have thrown rocks at the cops and not run off. But still it seems police are often justified with firing weapons whether the extreme force was called for or not.

How do police forces in other countries handle these kinds of incidents?

Not shooting dead blatantly unarmed people, for starters. Seems obvious, right?
 
All of these police shootings paint a rather distortedly morbid picture of life in America, which seems to be fanned by the herd mentality/groupthink culture of the internet.

Wow. Chase him and arrest, or just fecking ignore him. Its a rock. Shooting should have entered their mind, all 3 shot multiple times because he threw a rock, ran and then surrendered. Until Police in the great USA start getting prison sentences for this kind of cold blooded murder its just going to carry on.

So you just had an object hurled at you from a very close distance, the perpetrator runs off, you're now in pursuit, the perpetrator then turns around - are you sure this person is not armed?

I dunno as I've never been in that situation where I had to think in a split second if this individual is going to attack me or retrieve a concealed weapon.

Just playing devils advocate here. Personally feel the police could have stunned the man from multiple angles versus using lethal rounds. Only one police attempted to stun him and either missed or didn't connect.

Factually, there are numerous PDs in the US that use these types of tactics versus lethal rounds. We only hear of the lethal stuff. It does seem to me the US is becoming more of a militarized police but I also weigh in the areas where crime and racial tensions are much higher, understandably why PDs are more likely to use lethal rounds (neither just or unjust).

I simply would not want to be a policeman in some areas of the US. Actually, I have zero desire to be a policeman. I do feel there are good and bad cops, just like there are good military personnel and bad military personnel.

The Police do seem to be one of the few remaining large sets of people who it's ok to judge as an entirety based on the actions of a minority.

Obviously there are good and bad law enforcement officers, the same can be said for a myriad of other examples, but that's not really the point here. The point is how many people have been shot dead when they are unarmed or surrendering. Add to that the vast majority are black and you can see why people are getting pissed about it. The fact that so many of these blatant executions (that is exactly what they are) have been caught on camera and STILL nothing is done about it.

As for many departments using non lethal weapons, that's a step in the right direction I suppose, but they are all still armed with hand guns as well. Darren Wilson (the policeman who shot Michael Brown) even said he never wore his taser because it felt uncomfortable on his hip. Presumably his glock felt just peachy.

How many more criminals are now going to carry a gun or shoot first at police simply because they think they will be shot regardless? It's a nasty vicious circle.

In most of these controversial cases, they are technically, legally justified in shooting to kill. The problem is the deeper socio-cultural aspects of when a white cop shoots a black person and the ensuing social ramifications of the history of racism in the US.
 
Considering this tidbit in the usatoday article posted above, the police were likely on high alert when confronting him...

--Zambrano-Montes was arrested early last year for assault after throwing objects at officers and trying to grab an officer's pistol, court records show. Police this week say Zambrano-Montes refused to comply with orders to drop what he was holding and withstood a shock from a stun gun.--

I don't really believe we can sit here behind our laptops in our comfy chairs and know what it's like to be in these situations. Yet another reason why I never wanted to be law enforcement. I'm fairly certain some police want to dispatch their own versions of justice, possibly motivated by racial aggression and hatred of their views of society.

I've never had a single problem with a police officer when pulled over for traffic violations, stopped on the street for taking a drunk piss, etc. I've also never became belligerent, ran away, attempted assault, etc. But I also weigh in that I'm Caucasian and most likely to be dealt with differently than someone of another race in the same position as me. So I understand the psychology behind other races reacting the way they do towards police officers.

The outstretched empty arms would be a hint, that's for sure.

I do have some sympathy with the cops. Policing in a fecked up society where guns are as prevalent as they are in the US can't be easy. Couldn't be more different to the way a similar scenario would be dealt with in a more civilised country, such as the UK or Ireland.

That said, even in America, it seems obvious that this dude posed no threat. What more could he have done to let them know?

I study psychology and attempt to see both sides of any event, issue, etc. I understand the ideology behind radical religious extremists and why they choose to commit the atrocities they do. Yet that doesn't condone their acts. Same with police that could be dealing with multiple stressors and react in such a manner. That does not condone their acts either, only attempts to understand the reasoning. We've witnessed it with military personnel that were brought back from experiencing serious shit overseas and immediately thrust back into the civilian world, then snapped and killed their spouses or others.

I’m not arguing that they are Policing in a difficult environment, but they aren’t the only Police force in the World to work under such circumstances. I for one (like many others in here) grew up in a Country that had a well- organised terrorist organisation (IRA) that wouldn’t think twice about killing a Police Officer, yet they didn’t go around shooting anyone who looked suspicious in their eyes. My Dad was in the Police and he was targeted several times (as was my family) and he came within inches to death, but he still brought me up to respect both sides of the community.


There seems to be a shoot first ask questions later policy in the USA, and on the face of it their actions are being condoned by the lack of convictions for what is blatant murder.
 
I just realised at the start of the video they blatantly shoot across what looks like a busy street. No concern for collateral at all. Absolute scum of the earth.
