Anderson

I strongly disagree that he's regressed as a player, he has definitely improved, just not enough.

I thought he was good in the first half, not so good in the second. Depending on whether or not you've already made your mind up about him this either means he's useless fat feck or it's encouraging to see him playing with at least some semblence of form.

Our whole team looked flat after half time tbh (apart from Nani, Valencia and Kagawa anyway). Playing Barca is physically and mentally exhausting at the best of times, so that was one hell of a work out for a pre-season game. Anderson has been out for a long time so will take longer than most to get fully fit.

Oh and he's not fat. Look at the footage of him walking off. He's wearing a fitted shirt and it's hanging off him. No gut visible at all. That's not what a fat footballer looks like.

I do have to admit, he didn't look out of shape last night, probably wrong to pass judgement because that was our first pre-season game I watched live and in full.

Yep. Two pictures from last night's game:

I agree with the rest of your post. Started off alright but wasn't as good in the second half. It was a good game for him to play in and help build up his fitness.

He has a big fat round head doesn't he, it skews peoples perception of him.

It really does. His big fat round head has a lot to answer.

For a long time it made him look cuddly/friendly and hence, immune to criticism. Now that people are on his case about his development stalling, that same friendly big fat round head is a trigger for dog's abuse about his lack of professionalism.

Bollox, Anderson is a good player, with the potential to be great.

When he gets a run of games, he bosses midfields,

The potential to be great???

How? Where? When has he demonstrated for us he could be 'great'?

He has alot to do this season. I hope he does. I'd love him to become the player we had all hoped.

But the only thing he has shown thus far is he is a good player occasionally when fit...and unfit alot.

Did well last night. Who would thought a midfield two of Scholes-Anderson would cope so well against Barca.

Not completely match fir yet so wasnt even at his very sharpest but he stayed disciplined in his positioning and got through so much running he must have lost a couple of stone. Faded towards the end but that was to be expected given its pre-season the work rate involved in that match.

I can see the Scholes-Ando combination being preferred by fergie quite often this year.

Not me.

Out of all the midfield combinations, the Scholes-Ando partnership has been by far the worst these last few years. They did well last night but I wouldn't want to see it much in the season ahead. Scholes doesn't have the legs to track runners and Anderson doesn't have the awareness.

Yeah..that midfield would get tatered.

Admittedly not me either and I realise it was only pre-season but they're not going to come up against a much better midfield/attack than Barcelona's. Like I said Anderson's disciplined positioning impressed me last night and his awareness of runners didn't seem a problem. He was only ever exposed by the brilliance of Messi/Iniesta. Maybe the penny has dropped for him.

I think that's fair...Fergie has given him an opportunity. I think this may be his last mind.

Hopefully he gives himself the best chance and stays fit. Some goals early on in the season wouldn't go a miss!!

he and rooney should play on Friday night

they will benefit from the workout

lets hope this season, even if he is in and out of the team, he can stay fit for a prolonged period

I seem to recall that he and Fletcher actually struck up a really good partnership when they were forced to play together for a while.

 I love this post. So true, though.

be nice to see them play together again sometime!

come on fletcher

if we had a fit fletcher we'd have a lot of versatility in our midfield with combative, skillful and creative midfielders

carrick, scholes, cleverley, anderson, fletcher, kagawa, giggs, powell

definately room there for a dynamic player, a leader though

Turned out pretty well against City.

Yes, and that match depended on the central midfield, didn't it?

Stupid, petty comment. We were the better team until the sending off, and the entire team lost shape at 3-1.

Pretty confident first half we had the possession both in general and territorial, our attacking players were pretty woeful on the ball though. Their goal came from our flank where Milner I think was allowed to go unchecked. In fact most their second half goals came down our left where Young and Evra had a bad day and just didn't track runners.

Either way the Ando/Fletcher partnership only had about 45 mins in that game where as I said I'm pretty confident they were on top of the midfield even if we didn't use the ball our best. Once Evans went off it was always containment and the last few minutes were just a farce by all involved. Easy thing to blame the midfield though. The attackers had a lot to answer for in the first half given they had plenty of the ball and there were serious questions defensively. Had Evans not gone off though it's entirely conceivable we would have got back in to it.

States it much better than I can. The midfield was not the problem in that game.

Doing "well" in a preseason friendly even if it's against Barca means next to nothing. When the big matches with all their pressure come then we'll see the true worth of players.
The combo of Anderson/Scholes is one I hope I'll never get to see when the season starts.
If this was a competitive match, with the same line-ups, Barca would have easily won (again)

Cheers mate.

Tbh I think if we don't sign anyone Ando is probably the most likely to come in for Carrick if he's fit. I thought he was alright tbh against Barca, looked to have more concentration and helped keep it solid. We weren't that bad against them and alot of the joy they got in the first half was due to Valencia not having the positional sense required. We still had plenty of chances that we could have utilised better and Ando broke where he could.

He's not been spectacular so far but he's shown a bit more maturity both defensively and in possession for me which is a positive sign. Just needs to stay fit.

Say what you will about Ando, but his through passes are and have always been of a very high quality.

The Cleverley-Ando partnership works. It really does.

I want more of the lofted pass from edge of box into the box. He was all over that start of last season.

Definitely finding his range, over the last couple of games. Hopefully he manages to continue this into the season.

Strongly disagree on this Top. His hollywood balls have been one of his worst attributes here, they can be extremely ineffective.

Only when he tries them in the air, I feel. His through passes on the ground are usually very effective and dangerous.

Granted, some don't come off, but he's generally quite good at them, like he showed tonight.

You think? Always found his through passes in general to be very weak. Sometimes they come off but the majority of them just don't work.

I think he tries too many of them for a player with his passing range, basically. If he was able to limit the amount he did try and pick the right moments to play them, then of course it'd be a big improvement.
