Anderson

It's very strange indeed.

Lads, he's just back from injury and he was poor in a game in which pretty much everyone was poor. Before the injury he'd just hit some superb form. So here's a novel idea, let's give it a month or two and see how this goes for him, can he hit that top level again quickly and if he does, can he get stay injury free and get some consistency with it? After a very decent first game back before this and that ball to Rooney, surely we can forgive him one poor game?

Wow I'm always right I don't want to give you stick mate your a United fan at the end of the day. But you are really missing the point. It is not about one game but the last 5-6 years. But here's a novel view for you we all want Anderson to be a real top player and there is still hope he will, but in reality the likely hood is he won't going by his time here. You need to honestly face the reality it's more likely he'll not be this super player we all thought/hoped he'd be. He could still be a good player but I'd not want to rely on it unfortunately given his record he is more likely to let us down.

And over the past 5-6 years I agree, but you'd be a fool not to realise his improvements this season. You won't convince me that it's not silly to wait until he has ONE poor game coming back from injury before coming in here and claiming "ahhh it's the same again with him". Before this injury he was putting in superb performances, including the match he got injured in, I'll save my judgement of "it's the same story" if in 6 weeks time he's done nothing.

Next few months will be crucial for him I think. He just has to step up. Starting to fear Fergie won't give him much time to sort himself out.

It's okay for posters to remind everyone that Ando has been a huge disappointment overall, yet still conceding that he has shown flashes of brilliance this season. And "flashes of brilliance" is not at all an overstatement.

It's also not unreasonable to believe sustained brilliance is still possible for Ando, perhaps even likely. The only way we'll find out is by playing the samba boy.

Just a small sample of the hype beforehand, and then of course we had that match against Arsenal where we were overrun in midfield yet Anderson came out with the plaudits because of a couple of highlight moments in his individual "battle" with the best young midfielder in Europe.

The hype of people on here doesn't really count as a legitimate measure of future greatness. He was good in that game against Fabregas, no question. For me though, he has never looked like anything close to the talent of a young Ronaldo.

I'm about to give up with you! We had this discussion long before the Southampton game. You choosing to ignore this fact? You think we are all that fickle we base our opinions on one game? No one is taking it over one game but you we are all taking it over his time here 5-6 years (are you getting that). And you are now going to reserve the judgement of Anderson for 6 weeks  WTF you are beyond mental.

Maybe its time to accept anderson for what he is, a player who can drive us forward with a fresh injection of energy and pace, and has moment of brilliance, but also ones whos weaknesses are his fitness, stamina and inconsistency.

We forgive a lot of players for a lot of things, for example, scholes with his tackling - maybe its just time to accept that his contribution will always be bit part and take it as good enough.

For anyone advocating we sell him, WTF, seriously? We need squad players and he's not too bad.

Plus the BBC report:

Im sure you probably know this yourself browned but I think a lot of the hype about him came from the Porto v Arsenal game in the champions league and the flair and lack of fear he showed up against Fabregas and Arsenals midfield in general that night and what he showed is admirable. Im a big fan of his because Im a lover of direct football and I think he has enough ability and flair to dominate games but I think he has to learn that not every game can be dominated by flair sometimes simplicity is the key to controlling a game if he can learn to play a less direct shorter passing game at times he could be a great midfielder but I think his natural enthusiasm may stop this from happening

More Anderson myths? He didn't play in Porto, and certainly at Arsenal the game passed him by completely as we won comfortably.

He had a shocker, it happens. It's the first bad performance from him this season, really. It's like Rooney's mare against Swansea, you just have to forget about matches like that and move on.

Correct; this lads talking through his hat

The hype on here comes from the YouTube videos, everyone thought he was some kind of Ronaldinho clone

Brightonian we are talking about the last 5-6 years not one game to be fair. Don't think anybody is overly bothered about has last game so what he had a shocker a few did no big deal there. It's the overall picture with Ando. No one is saying he hasn't got undoubted quality either just that most are starting to think the odds are he will never be consistent enough to hold down a starting slot due to what has been so far from him. Loveable character fantastic ability but lots of other issues stop him being a regular.

You said you hadn't seen any evidence of that billing. There's the evidence. Do you need WhoScored stats to provide real evidence?

Still a teenager, the dreadlocked Brazilian has made a huge impact, is already in Brazil's national squad and is considered the heir apparent to Ronaldinho as his country's star player.

I think he's been very good this year so far, barring the injuries.

That is just lazy journalism. Every footballer is the next someone great in the world of journalism, it makes good copy. Ronaldinho's 'heir' apparent has 8 senior international caps, 5 of which, I think, are accounted for by his appearances at the Olympics in 2008, it shows you what the people who matter in Brazil think of that billing.

The crux of my point was that Ronaldo showed from day one, at United, his rare talent, he was inconsistent but always capable of being out of this world. When Ronaldo was 19 Luis Figo saw him at the closest quarters and proclaimed that he would be the world best player, it was a bold statement. Only the 'get stuck in' brigade in English football were rubbishing his chances.

For me, Anderson has never shown that at United, he has never been a 9 or 10/10 player. I don't see Ronaldo type upside in Anderson because I have never observed the raw materials, if he kicks on to be a world class player then I will streak at OT wearing nothing but tributary Anderson dreadlocks.

Anderson's been progressively getting better the last few seasons, and injuries have cocked it up. But it's only this season that he's looked good almost without exception, and that he's looked a force even as the game was nearing the end.

We rarely see him launch a 60 yard ball going no-where anymore, his passing is more measured and he is clearly becoming more and more refined in his decision-making. In addition he's been getting better at the goal-scoring bit, and he's given us a few memorable moments playing people through, like Rooney v Soton, Hernandez v whoever (escapes my mind at the mo), etc.

RvP had a hard time with injuries and didn't look world class until a couple of years ago. And it's harder still for a bloody centre mid to learn his trade. I'm happy to keep waiting for niggling injuries to subside, and for Anderson to step up proper... But for now he's making enough progress to justify my faith in his abilities.

I reckon talents like Ronaldo, Messi, Fabregas, Rooney etc. have skewed a lot of people's opinions. They think you ought to look the business before your 20s, never mind your mid-to-late 20s.

Jimy why do you keep comparing Anderson's trajectory to Ronaldo's? Him and Messi are at the very very top. It's very rare we get a player with Ronaldo's "upside" as you say.

I don't. People keep bring up the 'Ronaldo was crap for 3 years' argument, not just in this argument but as a defence for loads of players who are not developing. Firstly Ronaldo was not crap for the first three years, he put on some awesome perfomances, one in the FA Cup Final in his first season, no less, secondly; it was blatantly obvious from day one at United that he was an extra special talent.

What on earth? He did it repeatedly in the last game that we played, he finished up with a 66% pass completion rate, which is incredibly bad.

I didn't see that being from Hollywood balls, it was his quick short passing that was seriously off if I remember correctly.

He actually hit 6 long passes and 4 were successful. For me though, his decision making is still a weakness, probably his biggest.

I see. No qualms there.

Fergie gave him a slap round the ear after the match for something, he's the funniest player in the squad.

Fergie doesn't like him either...

what is this about cant tell if serious or not, a sense a smurk on fergies face. hmm

It's clearly In jest, a playful clip round the ear.

Not sure what Anderson did but probably being his usual self.

Anderson is mimicking Fergies hands forward clapping style and Fergie gave him a playful clip. :D

Gotta love Anderson! He justifies his place in the squad on his footballing capabilities but he must also be worth that place for his antics alone

I was just thinking, it looks like he's on his way to yet another write off season IMO. He could still contribute, but I've been let down again to be honest and I think that we'd do well to bring somebody of similar quality in to do a better and more consistent job over the course of a season.

He has improved, I'm not saying he hasn't, but injury has popped up yet again and it seems to be the same thing over and over again with him.
