Match Preview: Burnley - Man Utd

Burnley boss Stan Ternent's only injury doubt for the Worthington Cup clash against Manchester United is Steve Davis, who had five stitches in an eye wound sustained against Watford at Vicarage Road.

However, the skipper is expected to play, and Ternent admits he has chosen his team but will not inform the players until an hour before kick-off.

Ian Cox and Paul Cook have shaken off hamstring and shoulder problems respectively, while Gareth Taylor is back to full fitness following a spell on the sidelines due to concussion.

Andy Payton continues his recovery from a hernia operation.

Manchester United goalkeeper Fabien Barthez will be rested with either Ricardo or Roy Carroll between the posts.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson has a lengthening injury list with defender Gary Neville and midfielder Quinton Fortune both taking knocks in the victory over Liverpool.

Laurent Blanc (calf) and midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron (flu) remain doubtful while David Beckham, Roy Keane, Rio Ferdinand and Nicky Butt are still sidelined.

Promising youngsters Michael Stewart and Kieran Richardson might be given a run-out

Sir Alex Ferguson was in confident mood after his side beat rivals Liverpool, and ahead of the Worthington Cup tie with Burnley. This is what the boss had to say...

Injury update
"We have got a couple of knocks. Gary Neville will be doubtful for the game against Burnley. And also Quinton Fortune, who came off – but it’s a bit early to say what our chances are, even though it’s only 24 hours until the game. Hopefully we will have at least one of them ready because we are a bit short on numbers tomorrow. Gary got three or four stitches, it wasn’t really a gash – but the stud penetrated his skin. He will be ok for Saturday, but hopefully he will be available for tomorrow. We are running a tight ship at the moment, so we want him to be all right."

Current league form
"We are in the situation where we have got to win, being a few points behind the leaders. I think - as I said last week - we have had a few breaks, which haven’t been coming our way for a while. We are coping with the loss of players very well. The players have retained a really good positive approach to the match, and there is a good spirit about the place – it gives you a chance that, as it showed against Liverpool."

Burnley selection policy
"I don’t really have any option but to play the side that played against Liverpool. Simply because we have got even one or two of the younger players out injured at the moment. The likes of Michael Stewart could be involved, Luke Chadwick, David May has a chance, Phil Neville. I am not going to include Fabien Barthez, I’ll use either Ricardo Lopez or Roy Carroll. It’ll be an experienced side but there will be a sprinkling of one or two reserve players."

Praise for Stan Ternent
"Stan has done a fantastic job there. There performance in the last round against Tottenham was excellent, especially in the second half. I watched the game and they played really well. We are expecting a real emotional, fiery game. They have great passionate fans up there. It’s a ground that I have always looked forward to going to. I remember going there with the youth team in 94/95, and Phil Neville scored the winner in the Youth Cup Final, the atmosphere was fantastic and there were only about 12,000 there. So, with a full house tomorrow, it should be a good game."

Stan Ternent – colourful character?
”I’d say that that is a good description!”

Gifted lower league managers
"These guys like Stan, Sam Allardyce, Mel Machin, Lenny Lawrence, they have carved their careers out of the lower end of all the leagues. Wherever they go they do a great job, and it’s because they are great professionals, they love the game, they have knowledge and experience and I think these are qualities Burnley have got in Stan Ternent. I think all those managers could manage at the top level, no question. Lenny Lawrence and Mel Machin have done – Sam Allardyce has got Bolton into the Premier Division. But I think that it is about ability and experience – they have gained experience at almost every level of the game."

Praise for Diego Forlan
"We are all delighted for him. He keeps trying, and if you keep trying you have always got a chance. You can give out the message that the players have got to stick at it, but I think that comes from within. Character helps you, and the boy’s character has shown through. He’ll play tomorrow."

Feckin right, we've already blew the 'TREBLE' by foolishly qualifying for the second round of the Champs League, ending our chances of the prestigious 'UEFA Gleaming Cup'.

Carroll, Brown, Silvestre, O'Shea, May, P Neville, Stewart, Chadwick, Pugh, Ruud, Forlan.

Bench: Ricardo, Ole, Giggs, Scholes, Roche.

I'm really surprised he's risking Ruud with the Arsenal match coming up. Do you think maybe Fergie's leaning towards starting Diego/Ruud on Saturday and he's giving them another game to gel?

I agree with you.. Very surprised that he is using Ruud. Whats happened to Richardson?????

I don't don't why he's no rested. It's a good job we played the Scouse on sunday, any decent team and he'd have struggled.

John O'Shea in midfield could be interesting.

Ruud only playing about an hour then Ole will be coming on and replacing him.

I disagree with all you fans saying we should not play Ruud and we should lose. Support United in every game they play. I remember when fans on here were angry at winning against Leicester City in the last round, whats your problem?

I don't want us to lose this, I want us to win the Worthless with kids in the team. And women, kids and women.

I can't understand starting Ruud in a fecking worthless cuptie. It's games like these that injuries are so feckin easy to get!

You can probably tell by the non stop posting in this thread what a fantastic game it is. :)

Actually, it's a fast paced game, not much skill as of yet.
