As I said, there other options besides shooting it with a gun.
I don’t think spraying a dog would be my go to move, nor would a gun though.
Most of the videos I’ve seen of cops shooting dogs they aren’t even that close/threatening. If a dog was going at you from 20 yards it would take a seriously cool mother fecker to draw and hit it before it was on them.
I think they see a dog, see a potential threat and just go to ‘shoot it’ a lot of the time, cutting out about 4 rational steps in between.
I think a lot of it comes from how it’s viewed upon in law/case law. Dogs are considered “property” (rightly or wrongly, that’s a separate part of the discussion) so there’s not necessarily the same level of consideration when compared to a similar situation with a charging person, for example. With that in mind, the officers may not make the same progression through thinking about varying force options since the dog is just considered “property” as opposed to the consideration when it’s a person/human life.
Again, I’m not saying it’s right or wrong, just my thoughts on why there’s less hesitation from officers drawing guns on dogs. Tasers have been effective, OC spray not so much.
The problem with a taser and a dog is that they’re moving quickly, and are a small target already. The spread of the darts mean you have to be ridiculously accurate, or lucky, to get a connection for the darts to work. With that in mind, and the “dog being only property” situation, it’s easier to see the thought process the officers in those situations make.
