How is the education to become a police officer in the US?
All you need at minimum to apply is a high school diploma or equivalent (g.e.d) and 20.5 years of age. It may be different for other states but i imagine it's similar. Of course nowadays there's just so much competition for law enforcement jobs one would need some type of degree to be considered.
And it appears there are no weight/fitness standards as well.
There is when going through the hiring process. Afterwards, no there is not as you've probably noticed

Also, what about standards for prison guards? I've seen a few obese PGs in a friend's pics (he's a Sheriff Deputy PG).
Each department has different physical agility tests. When I was applying for police jobs I went to several physical tests for different departments and they were slightly varied. Some easier than others.
I'm not sure about prison guards. If they're sworn sheriffs deputies they should have gone through a normal application process and academy training (with all the physical stuff). But again, afterwards there are no tests or fitness standards so it happens a lot in prison settings.

Not to dismiss the poor judgment and actions of those officers, but gotta love these do-good citizens going above and beyond reporting "possible" vehicle theft, and then getting in a car and following said "suspect". What an idiot. Probably racist too

Telling bit in that story is that even after they realised that it was his own car, they still trued to prosecute him on bogus charges. A common thread among all law enforcement agencies in most countries in the world, double down on your own mistake than own up and apologize.

Wasn't sure if i should post this here or in the entertainment thread, but just got finished watching "Let it fall" on Netflix. Excellent and very intriguing documentary on the LA riots. I recommend it because it's fairly unbiased and gives a voice and insight to all the different people involved. It does go a bit into the policing culture, practices, and politics during and leading up to that time. Was eye opening.

Amazing, a cop wasn’t able to use the ‘feared for his life’ horseshit when he emptied a clip into a stranded motorist who was black. Even more amazing that a jury in Florida found the cop guilty. Not amazing at all that the last time a FL cop was found guilty of an on-duty killing was 1989 (cop was later acquitted in 1993).
