They're just finishing the draw and Olímpic Xátiva have got Real Madrid

It's hard to explain just how implausible this is, but if I tell you I watched a mate of mine in a match at Xativa a few years ago and not only were they non-league they weren't even in the Liga structure that contains hundreds of teams. In fact I watched them fail to get promoted to Liga 3.

As far as I remember it's a municipal sort of stadium with astroturf and a couple of hundred fans - apparently it's had a bit of refurbishment since and has a couple of thousand real seats, maybe it's even got grass now. Anyway they are back in Liga proper, and are now a 2B team - that's like the third layer down in the structure, albeit the 2Bs are organised in regional leagues.Their highest ranking ever.

Barcelona drew Cartagena.

The Copa has a very different structure to the FA Cup - with the teams that play in Europe being seeded and the lowliest qualifiers always being given a seed. The little clubs seem to love it - a draw with Real Madrid or Barca is like winning the lottery for the clubs.

They also do the draw for subsequent rounds at the same time. If things go according to pecking order, Atletico could play a semifinal against Real Madrid. Barcelona have a straightforward looking draw and should be the opponents in the final.

They'll beat Xativa 10-0, beat Malaga and then their old rivals Alcorcon will beat them 4-0.

Football all (long) weekend in Spain as it's a fiesta today - Día de la Constitución
So the Copa is using the holiday. Not the most competitive matches perhaps for the big boys, though Alcorcon beating Real Madrid 4-0 is not that long ago. Incidentally the lower/non-league minnows (as Alcorcon were) treat a draw against Barcelona or Real Madrid as a lottery win.

Alcorcon used their cup run cash and the new sponsors they earned to get promoted to Liga2

Minnows have had a (relatively) good day so far.
Lleida 1-2 Real Betis (despite the Liga 2B, Lleida keeper getting sent off a couple of minutes in)
Villarreal 2-2 Elche (will make a good second leg)
Algeciras 1-1 Real Sociedad (great day for Algeciras, a 2B team)
Racing Santander 0-1 Sevilla

Starting now:
Limones, Antoñito, Astrain, Mariano, Zurdo, Carlos David, Marcos, Fede, Riau, De Lerma y Federico
Vs
Pinto; Bartra, Puyol, Adriano, Jordi Alba; Song,Sergi Roberto, Busquets; Cesc, Pedro y Alexis

The Cesc as false nine experiment really should've ended already by now after the Ajax and Athletic games, such a waste of the player...

Alexis Sánchez misses a complete and open sitter, part 5036

It ended 1-4 and Barcelona have finally broken the curse of the Senyera (red/yellow stripe Catalan flag) strip. It's record prior to tonight had been P5, W0, D3, L2

We are struggling to break down the mighty Olimpic de Xativa at the moment. Almost halfway through and I don't think we have created a real chance yet.

Understandable really, Xativa are practically at full strength, while you lot are missing Ronaldo, Bale and Alonso

Francis; Alcázar, Mendoza, Pepín, Peris; Samu, Rifaterra; Dennis, Marenyá, Belda; Christian
Vs
Casillas; Carvajal, Nacho, Sergio Ramos, Arbeloa; Casemiro, Illarramendi; Di María, Isco, Jesé; Morata

They actually managed to get a draw?? That's a bit embarrassing for Madrid looking at the strength of the side they put out

The last of the matches of the round are tonight. The story so far - Alcorcon beat Granada! They lost 0-2 at home, won away by the same score and went through on penalties. Sadly they're probably going to get Espanyol in the next round, not a fat juicy cash cow like Barca or their old rivals Real Madrid

Sorry, what I meant is were there any games before the chart posted above? Like between lower teams? I was wondering how many teams are involved in the Copa del Rey from start to finish!

In england the Premier League (and Championship) teams come in at the last 64 stage (not the last 128, as the mirror wrote midweek). In Spain the La Liga teams come in at the last 32.

The round before the last 32 in Spain is contested by 23 teams (with one given a bye). The round before the 64 in England is contested by 40 teams.

It's not like the FA Cup, but it's not like the League Cup either. It takes Liga 1 and Liga 2, and then the top teams from the 2Bs and 3s - Sean's wikipedia link explains it. To understand the Copa structure and seeding, it probably helps to know:
Liga 1 - 20 teams
Liga 2 - 22 teams
Liga 2B - 4 leagues - 80 teams
Liga 3 - 18 leagues - about 360 teams
Below that the regional associations take over.

So if a Liga 3 team makes it into the final 32 it's like a non-league team getting there.

When Alcorcon beat Real Madrid in 2009 they were a 2B, they are now in Liga 2 (and doing well, largely on the back of gate money and sponsorships they got from that Copa win!).

The top clubs play 8 games to reach the Copa final, rather than 5 + replays as we do in the FA cup. They don't have a second cup competition. So in terms of number of games it's about the same.

It still gets its shock results, even with the two leg format.

Generally speaking the little clubs love the Copa structure, in particular the guarantee (in this round) that the smallest clubs always get to play a team that's playing in Europe and that the first leg is in their own stadium, and they get the daytrip to a top stadium. A little bit of wealth (and glamour) redistribution. Different certainly.

Why? If anything, I think it's more fair.

More games I guess but you play one round fewer and don't have the second domestic cup competition so I guess it's all right.

Alcorcon beat Granada this year
Eibar beat Athletic and Cordoba beat Real Sociedad last year

There are usually one or two odd ones each year.

Mirandés! And of course Alcorcón the first time :D

Courtois is having a stormer for Atleti away to Valencia.

The ever dependable Raul Garcia has the only goal in the game, nearly finished now.

Courtois has kept them in this. It amazes me he isnt actually our first choice keeper.

Typical Athletico performance. Stifle the opposition for the first 60 minutes and then pounce.

Different kind of pressure playing for Chelsea. Not the same kind of media hassle. Brilliant for Chelsea to be able to loan him to Atlético (get the name right please :) ) and gain all that experience whilst you still have an excellent keeper in Cech.

They probably deserved the draw. Better team in the 2nd half. Atleti with the important away goal though.

Leo with the medical all clear to return to playing, won't likely start tonight in the 1st leg against Getafe but surely will make a 2nd half appearance

7 years ago in Copa del Rey action against Getafe where this happened at Camp Nou

That was seven years ago?! Oh my how time flies :(

Didn't he shortly after, like in the following weeks, score a handball goal which spurred the Maradonna comparisons after this goal?

Months later, yes, against Asspanyol.

7 years later, it is remarkable how quickly time flies, he was only 19 at the time but already a superstar among fans as well as the Ballon D'Or winner, Ronaldinho, who correctly pointed out at his acceptance for the award, months earlier, that he wasn't even the best player on his team

Alcarcon 1 0 Espanyol (just the first leg, but still, Alcarcon again :D)

Barca are 1 up against Getafe at HT. Fabregas goal.
Messi's on the bench.

Getafe played hard, credit to them. I liked what I saw for the most part from Barcelona, lacked more goals but there was some fantastic passing in that final third. I imagine Messi will come on for Roberto
