Ooh Ah! 4,000 Cantonas
Quoted from the Sunday Mirror:

"Four thousand Eric Cantona lookalikes will invade Selhurst Park next week.

Manchester United fans plan to mark the 10th aniversary of his attack on a Crystal Palace supporter with their own special tribute to the Frenchmeen.

United's travellering army have been urged through supporter's clubs, fanzines and via the internet to dress up as Cantona when the Reds face Palace on Saturday.

Their efforts will include the wearing of rubber Cantona masks as well as donning his famous No.7 shirt with the trademark upturned collar. It was a decade ago in January that Cantona shocked football by learing into the crowd to launch a kung-fu assault on Matthew Simmons after being racially abused following a sending-off.

Cantona was banned for nine months by the FA and was also found guilty of assualt in the criminal courts.

But he returned the following season to lead United to a Premiership and FA Cup Double as well as being named Footballer of the Year".

LEGEND!

CRYSTAL Palace are likely to be without Aki Riihilahti and Darren Powell for the visit of Manchester United this weekend.

Midfielder Riihilahti is out with a calf strain, while defender Powell sustained a knock in a behind-closed-doors friendly last week.

That means Palace manager Iain Dowie is likely to field an unchanged side to the one that beat Birmingham City 2-0 last Saturday.

Dowie is hopeful that Emmerson Boyce's contract extension will be resolved before the end of the week. Talks have dragged on since October and Dowie is confident the deal will be sealed before the United game.

Crystal Palace (4-4-2): Kiraly; Boyce, Granville, Hall, Sorondo; Routledge, Soares, Leigertwood, Hughes; Johnson, Freedman. Subs from: Speroni, Borrowdale, Lakis, Kolkka, Torghelle, Andrews.

Absolute banana skin of a fixture this one. With so much emphasis on Milan I fear points could be dropped :nervous:

Come on boys, prove my pessimistic hide wrong :smirk:
Are you or anyone else going?

I'd prefer if there was the one and only Cantona, and they could play the kung-fu fighting song at half-time and Eric could do a dance or something :)

Ruud To Start, But Neville Misses Out

Ruud van Nistelrooy will start against Crystal Palace as Sir Alex Ferguson attempts to boost the striker's match sharpness ahead of the trip to the San Siro on Tuesday.

United resume their Champions League last 16 tie with the Italian champions next week, but first face the possibility of closing the gap on Chelsea in the Premiership to just three points - if only temporarily.

"Absolutely. Ruud will start," Sir Alex told us.

But the United boss was dealt a defensive blow with the news that Gary Neville misses the trip to Selhurst Park and with his starting place at the San Siro uncertain.

"I would rule Gary Neville out against Crystal Palace," said the United boss. "And we're fighting hard to get him ready for Milan.

"It was a real blow he got on his leg against Portsmouth. Fortunately there was no break. That is the blessing to come out of it.

"Nonetheless, he'll miss Saturday's game and leaves us pushing to get him ready for Tuesday."

Ferguson knows the importance of closing the gap on Chelsea to three points on Saturday, but most have an eye on Tuesday's European tie with Milan.

"It's going to be a difficult week with the European game on Tuesday," admits the United manager. "That's a massive game for us. It won't be an easy week, but it's something we have to get through.

"We hope the gap will be reduced to three points. Chelsea's players will expect to win at Norwich, but that doesn't mean to say making the gap only three points will make it difference. But it just might.

"Chelsea may look upon games as being easy, but there are no easy games at this time of year. We've been there before and we know what it is like.

"Teams are fighting for survival, take Crystal Palace for example. They're four points clear of Southampton at the moment. It's a little cushion, but not a big one. It gives them something worth fighting for. I expect that tomorrow.

"That's the point of winning against Palace and being in a position where we are so close. For our own confidence, it does us not harm. Whether it affects Chelsea we will have to wait and see."

Report by Ben Hibbs, at Carrington.

Preview: Crystal Palace v Manchester United
Stuart Mathieson

GARY Neville is all set to miss Manchester United's visit to Crystal Palace tomorrow.

The Reds right back was withdrawn at half-time last weekend against Portsmouth after suffering a blow on his leg.

The 30-year-old England defender was taken to hospital but scans ruled out any break.

However, manager Sir Alex Ferguson is bracing himself to make a change. "Gary is struggling for the Palace match," he said.

"The X-rays were clear but there is bruising of the bone and there is a lot of soreness."

United, though, are expected to have Rio Ferdinand and Roy Keane back for selection.

Ferdinand missed the Pompey win at Old Trafford last Saturday with a hamstring problem but Fergie is hoping the central defender will return.

Returning hero

Keane was omitted in favour of a breather having played five matches on the trot in February for the Reds.

Ferguson has United's Champions League match in Milan next week to consider when he names his XI for Palace.

With the Reds trailing 1-0 from the Old Trafford first leg against the Italians Fergie will need his strongest side for the San Siro.

But with the chance to press Chelsea in the title race success in London against Iain Dowie's side is vital.

"There will be some attention paid to selection thoughts for Tuesday but we have got to get a result at Palace so I will be picking a strong side for that one," said the United boss.

"Iain Dowie has created a determined outfit and we'll be in for a hard time."

John O'Shea, who replaced Keane against Portsmouth is hoping the Reds can reduce Chelsea's lead to three points by tomorrow tea-time as the league leaders wait to face Norwich at Carrow Road in a 5.15 kick off.

"The run we've been on is fantastic and if we can keep it going at Palace it will be down to a three-point gap and that might cause a few nerves in the Chelsea squad," he said.

"In Andy Johnson Palace have a quality Premiership striker and if he is given chances he'll cause you a lot of problems. We have to be careful."

Last season: Different divisions.

Form: United - W W W W W

Palace - W D L L W

Top scorers: United - Rooney 9

Palace - Johnson 18

Key opponent: Andy Johnson - has exceeded all expectations this season and trails only Thierry Henry in the Premiership goal charts.

We stop Andy Johnson and we should be okay, although I saw the Arse match at Palace in November and Palace should have won it. They are a very tough proposition at home and seem to have a large number of penalties this year as well.

We need to keep it tight early on and then hopefull knock at least 1 in before half time, they'll be fired up and still have a chance of surviving this season, so they also have a lot to play for.
Bascially for us every game from now until the end of the season is a cup final. Any loss of point and it game over.
We need to get within 3 points of Chelsea and see how they react. Most of their players have not won a domestic league before and have never been in this position, our experience is vital

5:0, no problem. Ruud hat-trick, Scholes & Smith score aswell

Dowie to fight fire with fire

Crystal Palace boss Iain Dowie has vowed to fight fire with fire on Saturday in a bid to combat Manchester United's potent strikeforce.

Dowie harbours grave fears about the damage Ruud van Nistelrooy, Wayne Rooney, Louis Saha and Alan Smith could do to his Palace defence if they sit back and try to contain United.

So the plan is to be bold, to take the game to United and aim to derail their title aspirations with a shock win at Selhurst Park.

"The key to them is they try to disturb your pattern of play or your defensive set-up by their rotation up front," said Dowie.

"If you look at the four forwards - Alan Smith, Louis Saha, Wayne Rooney and Ruud van Nistelrooy - I don't think too many sides in the division have better forwards than that. We are well aware of that," said Dowie.

"The attacking scenarios he (Sir Alex Ferguson) can put on against you are varied and different. And Roy Keane is at the peak of his form. He must need a rest by now!

"It must be a big, big game for us. We can look no further than trying to create and cause an upset.

"We are not going into this game with a plan to just contain. We are going to try and have a go at them. I would rather get beaten having a go than get beaten 1-0 in the last minute after defending for 90 minutes. We are not well set out to do that.

"We are in the pressure-cooker environment. We have to try and get something out of it but we have got to enjoy it against the great sides."

I just think it's going to be a tough game, and we'll rest quite a few players for the Milan game (probably one of Giggs/Ronaldo, Rooney and Keane). They might nick a draw.

But my track record at predictions isn't the best in the world ;)

I think Rooney might be rested for Tuesday and I'd imagine keane will be as well.

Giggs was poor against milan and could do with another game.

After playing so many games lately, let him have a game off. With Saha and Smith both wanting games (and needing them for match-fitness), we don't need him on the bench.

With Gary out, play Wes at right back and bring Micky back into the centre. Alternatively, O'Shea at right back and Brown partnering Rio.

My speakers aren't broken... I accidentally deleted my sound drive trying to remove spyware :o

Expecting a good win here, although I'd be satisfied with a scrappy 0-1 I guess
