Eden Hazard | "I am signing for Chelsea"

I think we were also hoping Fletcher was on his way back properly at the start of the season.

The problem of getting a CM is that it would really put the writing on the wall for Morrison and Pogba, if it isn't already.

They are employees who produce an incredible amount of economic output. Why the feck shouldn't top footballers get top money for filling stadia and selling shirts? The money they make pales compared to what the Glazers make.

No one is saying that top players shouldn't be payed well.

They are paid extremely well.

So are average players, and even poor players.

Depends what sort of lifestyle you lead and how much you spend.

In the UK that'd be probably less than £1.5million a year net. If you pack in at 35 and live till 70 that's plenty for you and me but for a player used to spending £50k on watches and £200k on cars its not a fortune.

How many watches and cars do you want?

Do well and stay loyal to United, and the wage will increase considerably from £50k.

There are lots of high earners that move on to more lifestyle jobs so that they enjoy what they do, totally agree. The difference is that footballers are already participating in a lifestyle job. Why get paid £80k a week to do something you love when an almost identical offer is on the table for double the pay.

If I had the choice of living my life in absolute luxury or living my life in absolute luxury and making sure my close relatives, kids, grandkids and great grandkids lived exceptionally comfortably I know which I'd choose.

You could argue it's selfish to take a few trophies in the short term over £10-15m extra for all your loved ones in the long term.

Before the Rooney affair I'd have agreed with you. However the situation with him has put to bed the myth that if a great player is signed on huge wages, every squad member would be knocking on the door asking for a pay-rise (either put the myth to bed or showed we don't care about it)

During the Summer we replaced a Goalkeeper with a Goalkeeper and 2 defenders with 1 defender, then bought Ashley Young. Fergie has already implied that the c. £16m for Jones has come out of next years transfer budget, whilst the Goalkeeper situation was more than obvious. I'm of the opinion that the Young signing was more opportunistic as he was coming to the end of his contract (although I still believe we overpaid). You often hear "how can we be skint, we've just spent £50m!!!!", but if you look at it objectively at absolute best we have a team that is nearly as strong as we had going into last season.

I think the wages are the real issue/problem however: De Gea, Jones and Young vs Brown, O'Shea, Obertan, Scholes (at the time) and VDS is certainly a net wage decrease. As I said earlier I am of the opinion that setting wages strictly at 50% of turnover, whilst admirable, is only allowing us to buy bright prospects and squad players, not the top drawer "first name on the team-sheet" caliber of player we require.

Do you actually belive that these footballers are thinking about their grandkids' future???

Having a 50% wage ratio of turnover is extremely high, and at the boarder of what is sustainable for a business.

Most football clubs are making losses, and the players' wages are a big factor in those losses.

Was at the Emirates today to watch the match.

Link?

Odd if true. Can't see either Arsenal or us snatching him ahead of the money clubs. He might like Arsenal and Wenger, but surely he's got bigger ambitions.

He was probably just checking out a big game as a fan.....I mean had to find something to do while he was in London; in-between his meetings with Chelsea's money men. :(

Probz Arsenal bound. He's always linked with them and talked of his admiration for them.

Probably won't move there if they don't make the Champions League and that is going to be tough for them with Chelsea and Tottenham ahead of them now.

I don't think footballers specifically think about their grandkids' future, but I'm certain they think about their parents, children and close relatives. I'm also certain they want to provide the absolute best lives possible for their children and that would include their children able to provide in turn for their children.

The point I was trying to make is that people seem to hold players to a higher standard than a normal man on the street. If I wasn't a fan of United or City (e.g. Nasri etc) and City came in offering a lot more money why wouldn't I go to City? I'd say as of right now you'd have a similar chance of winning trophies at either club and the only reason(s) I can see for choosing United is history or wanting to work with Fergie, both of which I'm sure are low down on the list of priorities for most players.

50% of wages to turnover is extremely low for a Football club. So much so that the majority of clubs could not even be slightly competitive if they tried to sustain that level. Wages have gone up exponentially in the last 10-12 years. The reason for this is not (mostly) down to a couple of wealthy owners, as a lot of people would have you believe. It's that transfer fees have gone down quite substantially in comparison over the last 10-12 years and to compensate wages have increased dramatically.

A top class player is still cheaper now over a 5 year period than they were 10-12 years ago (pro-rata). The difference being that the majority of the fee now goes to the player, not the selling club. Common sense would suggest that to stay competitive, you have to use the large saving in transfer fees paid to lift the wages cap to 60 odd % at least.

Apparently favors a move to England. Feck.

During a discussion about his future on Canal Plus, Hazard stated that he was going "to England" but ruled out the possibility of him leaving before the end of the season: "It's impossible for me to leave in January. As I said, I will finish the season at Lille, [as] we can still win a title."

The Belgium international recently expressed his interest in joining Paris Saint-Germain but Hazard explained that he had decided instead to move away from Ligue 1.

"This is an important personal choice and a football that suits me," Hazard continued. "I would rather go abroad, even if the PSG is a great club. I want to feature at a big club where I am sure to play."

Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal have all reportedly been tracking Hazard, who Lille are resigned to losing in the summer. The Ligue 1 club are hoping to get a transfer fee of €40 million for the player.

well, that's us out of the running then, since we won't pay such high transfer fees.
Liverpool are more likely to sign him than we are...chances are, if he's available, then he's all City. Expect the likes of Milner and Nasri to be sat on the bench regularly in another season or so.

But he said he wants to move to a big club.

I expect him to either be at City or Chelsea. He's the biggest talent has produced these last few years, he won't go for a fee below of 30m euros. He'd be ideal for Arsenal

France Football say he wants join Spurs in the summer. Terms not agreed with Lille as of yet.

France Football : toute l'actualité du football
France Football are quite a respectable source, or so I gather. It also ties in with an "insider rumour" that was doing the rounds on one or two Spurs message boards during the January transfer window.

But the lack of any direct quotes, plus the fact that the report says that a fee has yet to be agreed between the the clubs (even if were true that Hazard has agreed to come) means that a huge amount of scepticism is justified.

Still, you never know .... it's certainly not ridiculous to imagine that Hazard might be looking favourably at Spurs.

Agreed.

Meaning the likes of United, City, Bayern, Barca, Real Madrid, AC Milan, Inter and Juve are not putting any serious offers on the table.

Hazard on Belgian television (RTBF), moments ago: 'Maybe I'll go to Tottenham. It's a great English club. I said I would go to England'.
Be interesting how the salary cap at Spurs would work if he did join.

Indeed. All of them are more or less a guaranteed CL football for the next few years at least, Tottenham are still unsure of that. They will most likely lose their manager after season as well which could have various effects on their future.

Mind you, with a couple of signings like these they might genuinely catch up with the likes of United and City soon.

Spurs has a long way to go before they can hope to challenge United and City on a consistent basis. They haven't got the squad depth that the other two have, and depend on 14-15 players - whereas United and City basically have 2 teams of quality players each.

If there is ONE player I'd want at United, it's Bale.

Doubt we've got the cash to get him though, unless he makes it clear United was the only team for him.

Same here... If he leaves spurs, it ll be either city or spain
