I think we need a no holds barred discussion on this guy. Despite having some of the best defensive stats, a good portion of reds talk about him like he is the second coming of Ashley Young the left back. How do we reconcile this difference?

Some made their minds up on him in the first few months and can't change their minds since.

He will always be the Fred that gave the goal away against Arsenal etc. People say he can't pass but the stats just don't back that up.

He's just played a key role in Brazil getting to the Copa America final - yet people will still say he's lucky he's not playing in the championship

It's a bit more than that.

Fred gives his all and is a decent performer. However, he's not a DM. We've experimented with him in the holding role and it doesn't work. In addition, its not like he's a perfect ball winner either, he's good, but not good enough to be a certified starter for a contender; and yes Wijnaldum, Henderson and Fabinho are all better than him, so lets put that to bed. They were all better on the ball and better in their press resistance. In addition, Fred isn't a great passer or dribbler, which means that we need his partner to be both a good holding player and a good ball progressor if we want to start building up play as well as our rivals. Is Fred really worth having to look and search for a Xabi Alonso or a Schweinstieger ( who are really rare in today's game). In addition, we don't even have a competent partner for him at the club; Pogba playing with Fred means either Pogba stays deep and gets exposed or Fred shows his poor positioning and is limited in his ability to cause chaos and harry the opposition ( which is his primary skill); Fred with Matic creates massive gaps in midfield because Matic can't make up the spaces Fred creates from trying to close down the opposition; Fred with Mctominay offers nothing offensively. The only solution requires us to play a 433, essentially reducing the goal threat from Bruno ( who was our top goal scorer last season). He's a complex player to have, he can work in certain circumstances, but I don't see him as a player who is worth all that mental gymnastics or really worth a starting position in our team. If he improves his passing we can talk, but until then, stats can say anything they like, but when he plays, we struggle to move the ball up the pitch and thats a massive problem for a midfielder.

Thank you both for the views. Exactly the kind of discussion I was hoping to have.

Hopefully more comment.

tjb - I agree with some of your conclusions although think Fred is not the issue. It’s a problem of balance in our midfield and how Ole wants to play. The way we tried to play last season, there is a big gap between the double pivot and the attackers. And we need someone who can hit long passes consistently to help progression. Neither of Fred or McT provide that. Pogba can - but then we don’t get the same defensive work rate we get from the others. So, if had a six with a passing range, I think Fred would actually work extremely well in that formation.

Although, my preference would be just change the formation.

I thought he was great when he came on but was let down by Pogba. Him and Garner looked pretty good though.

He has a great engine and does not look like he was gone for the summer at all.

I'd agree with some of what you wrote. Including that we don't really have a competent partner for him at the club. However you can say the same about Pogba, Matic and McTominay as well. It's simply impossible to build a balanced partnership with any combination of the four.

So the goal is to figure out which one of them should be partnered with a new guy. Is there anybody out there who can partner Pogba in a two man midfield at the top level? As far as I'm concerned - no, he's simply not suitable for that role. What about Matic? No, at this stage in his career he's incapable of playing well for more than a month at a time. McTominay? No, he simply doesn't provide anywhere near enough in the middle of the park to help control the game. No matter who or what type of midfielder we sign, I can't see any of those three being able to be half of a partnership that can truly compete for the PL or CL. So while I do agree we need the right type of partner for Fred to really get the right balance in midfield, at least he is capable of getting the right partner for.

I feel like I want to make a new thread about respecting McFred but I don't want to be targeted everytime they make a mistake either.

Great performance from today from our hardworking duo.

My a*se to the people that think Ander Herrera were better than Fred.

Love him. Glad he got a goal. Hopefully he can get a few more this season.

When Pogba got the ball in that position, right said Fred.

I thought he had a quietish game but took his goal really well. needlessly fouled giving Leeds a free kick on edge of box.. needs to cut that out. 7/10

Slight change to last season is it seems like McTominay was allowed to play less conservative B2B role, while Fred was more of an actual DM.

Happy for him he got a goal, but overall had a poor game, he's never effective in that sitting role. It's will bite us if we play like that.

Yeah felt like he was restricted and the tempo of the game was too fast for him.

Love this dude. Great game from him and McT

“the worst midfield pairing in the top 10”

and other trash threads/opinions will hopefully finally die this season.

Put a functioning and firing attack ahead of them and they help us win the midfield battle, set the tempo and take control of the game.

Him and McT did very good job. Their energy, never backing away from challenges helped us to control game.

I find that he helps us play at a certain speed in midfield.

He kind of just let's it go to another player as soon as it comes to him.

His energy in breaking up the play was great today. Never allowed Leeds to get going. And a goal to boot!

Thought he was poor in the first half. Much better in the second. Which seems to happen with him a lot. When he’s playing well, though, it gives the whole team a big lift. No surprise the goals were scored when they were.

There were several occasions where all AWB needed to do was to pass to him and he'd drive the ball forward ala Anderson. He's also quick so it helps.

Meslier made the classic blunder of thinking that Fred's shot would go somewhere near where he was aiming it.

Lethal finisher.

Will always divide fan opinion like most players I guess. What is clear is that Ole believes in you and Scott so the links with CDM's are more the media and some fans wishful thinking. I actually think you are better than most fans give you credit for.

Who are you talking to?

Does Fred read his Redcafe performance thread?

Not at full speed yet but still very decent at times and great reward for a great run to the box and nice finish. I am backing him for 5 goals this season! Mostly he's been used to mop for a possible counter attack and slow down attacks but his occasional runs to the box are actually very good, just need to be noticed and left to go forward in the first place. I think Ole has done this little tactical tweak last season. Needs the coop of all teammates to cover instead though.

When I was young, my family members nicknamed me Fred because I hated the name and they all enjoyed winding me up.

Proud of that moniker now.

Good game from him and he took his goal well. It was a typical good Fred performance, he brought his usual energy, press and directness as well as the occasional clumsiness on the ball. Although the latter was at minimum today.

Like I've said before, he's a mainstay in that midfield and he'll really be a tough one to replace. With a deep playmaker, who also stays and offers the protection that would allow Fred to press more, he would shine.
