Television Game of Thrones (TV) • The watch has ended

Really enjoyed everything up until Dany's death. The scenes of Drogon spreading his wings behind her, coming out of the snow, and burning the throne were all spectacular.

Everything after the time-jump (including the fecking time-jump itself) was pure dung though, just really lazy, poor, cliche ridden, everything you wouldn't want in a finale to GoT. An absolute shocker.

So, yeah, I'll just pretend it ended with the throne melting, or something.
I act like it jumped from that to the stark montage at the end with things left up in the air. :)

The dragon burning the iron thrones was the worst thing i've ever seen. Why didn't they either:

a. Have the dragon burn Jon, only for Jon to walk out of the flames (because I assume these dragon people can actually do that?).
b. Actually kill fecking Jon, as keeping him alive achieved absolutely feck all. At least it would have been a worthy death.

Having the dragon suddenly become aware that the Iron Throne was the source of all conflict was absolutely fecking pathetic.

I really doubt that’s how you’re supposed to process what happened.

Basically Drogon’s instinct was to rage burn Jon for killing Dany but couldn’t due to their familial/spiritual bond so fecked up the thing right next to him instead.

It was pretty lame but you’re projecting a conciousness onto Drogon that wasn’t there.

I read it that it didn't want anyone sitting on the throne apart from her, no?

What's the reasoning behind keeping Tyrion alive for the unsullied ?

Lazy writing. i think he's a fan favourite, along with jon so they didn't kill them.

don't try to search for logical explanations, i stopped doing that. this season has been extremely shit and th last episode was the epitome of that.

The council mentioned that they had a huge army outside the castle ready to tear through it (illogical itself but that’s another point) so on that basis I guess you can assume that they had done a deal with them to keep him alive, seeing as they requested he be at the meeting.

Is it really that illogical? The Knights of the Vale are allies of the Starks and would vastly outnumber the remaining Unsullied and Dothraki. Killing Jon Snow would continue the civil war with Greyworm’s side having no true leader to unite and lead them and the Unsullied without Daenerys and would be inevitably defeated by a northern coalition.

Thinking about it, there’s a half a season you could get out of that alone.

That was for Jon Snow. The north was loyal to him
If they had executed Tyrion, no one would have cared

To be fair to this last episode, it really suffered that we had to wait a week after episode 5 to watch this.

It really should’ve been a double episode. This could’ve solved a few uproars. One letting fans process the mad queen with an episode straight away to process. Second the anticlimatic last episode wouldn’t have seemed so anticlimatic.

I wonder if I ever do rewatch this season, if binging fixes a lot of the issues?

I was lucky enough to binge the last season of breaking bad and that was glorious.

Yes, what happened was definitely better than that.

People were already complaining that Arya got to kill the Night King. Imagine the reaction if she’d been the one to kill Daenerys too.

It also would’ve contradicted her final scene with the Hound too.

You can’t solve bad writing with even worse writing.

I was talking from a sense point of view, it made little sense for Jon to kill her the way he did when Arya was stood outside.

I mean... You see the issue here, right ?

You mean as in you cant please eveyone? Yeah sure. But i was just floating around ideas, narrative choices always divide people but i just consider this ending just plain bad. Where as with say sopranos its still all very well done if not what i would have ideally wanted.

You're right, GOT went from one of the best TV shows ever to a real joke

I still think Dany's death and subsequent lack of anyone giving a shit and there being basically zero repercussions to it (apart from Jon getting to go hang with his pet and best bud) is hilarious given that an episode and a half ago we were still supposed to be rooting for her as the ultimate goodie of the show.

Wasnt it Jon who told Arya to meet him at the gates?

I thought this too, and he also got arrested for regicide so he wasn't really in a position to follow through with the plan.

People not doing the logical, most simple thing is kind of fundamental to 99% of all scripted entertainment.

I can accept that when the alternative is actually well done....in this case it was terrible hence the criticism.

Are they really considering spin-offs involving any of the current lot? The only one that seems possible would be Arya and her travels.

I think the magical dragon doing slightly weird things was the least problematic thing in the entire last season.

Ok. Watched it. It was ok. Not great but good enough. A few decent scenes and everything wrapped up fairly well. Some obvious flaws too but hey, when was the last time you saw a long running television reach its conclusion without any flaws? This didn’t even come close to the sort of closing episode feckery we’ve seen in, say, True Detective. That’s for damn sure.

I just have two final observations.

People who are getting really angry about this season are weird.

People who are actually writing loads of alternative endings are mental.

That is all.

Whilst it wasnt as good as previous seasons some of you guys who are annoyed are really coming up with equally shit if not worse ideas

this x100

all the stupid suggestions highlights that it's a difficult job. not saying they haven't messed things up, because they have, but i do give them some leeway given Martin has taken so fecking long.

it was a waaaaaaaaay worse finale than True Detective's.

It's things like this that make me believe people are going over the top with some of their criticism.

The chair moment, however, stands out particularly, and serves as a final awkward indication of how far afield the HBO version of Game of Thrones ended up from where it began. It’s a scene that fits the mold of an prestige-TV finale, seemingly playing towards a final moral, or underscoring a governing theme. Why do we never figure out what happens to Tony Soprano at the diner? What does it say about both America andDon Draper that he created the most popular ad of the 1970s? A good finale must have a scene or element that looms large without being spelled out—breaking outside of the confines of literal plot significance or posing a final riddle. Here, Benioff and Weiss force our faces to the fire, demanding that we wonder why Tyrion moving these chairs is significant and wrangle with its implications, whatever we believe them to be.

So Tyrion making a bunch of chairs look neat and professional, then posing before his council just come in and start smacking them about has some kind of hidden meaning. What a load of pretentious feckwittery.

And what happened to the horse! Why did the horse get 3 mins of screen time last episode to only disappear now.

Where did it even take her. She was back near the red keep again. Dumb as feck.

Were in an age where people watch to be critics rather than to enjoy

Whether it has good or bad stuff, you can see people are more interested in discussing the negatives than the positives. It's just the way life is

I don't think any show has had this much scrutiny. It comes with being one of the biggest TV spectacles I guess. It does also lend to increasing ones popularity with videos tweets posts and articles + blogs.

Not saying everything should just be accepted cos fck euron. But there is defo of an element of some going ott

I think it’s quite astute really. The multi faceted intrigue that you would expect to accompany a true “greatest ever tv show” to have was abandoned in favour of throwbacks and caricature characters. “Tits and dragons” effectively, when it used to be so much more

It's hard to enjoy the ending of something like GOT. I've liked the destruction of KL, how the red witch lit up the Dothraki swords, how Drogon was flying during the destruction of Euron's fleet.
From a visual POV, those things were very nice but the story and dialogues ? Not so much

There are also many suggestions that are much better than what the paid writers came up with.

Season 1?!? You have to be fecking joking!! The whole green paint nonsense. Come off it. It was pure drivel from start to finish. The GoT finale was just a bit Hollywood-y. Trying a bit too hard to give all the main characters a nice happy ending (which was out of keeping with the vibe of the series as a whole). Not even close to True Detective levels of outright nonsense.

The last scene with Rust and Marty was good, how they solved it was ridiculous indeed

Hang on now, the GoT finale had way more dumb things in it than the green paint part of True Detective.

That's not true. Avengers got decent reviews and most people dismissed the negatives. It was broadly a positive vibe. You cant produce sub standard work and not expect people who have invested hours watching it not to whine. Especially some who are emotionally invested.

Plus, this one was particularly absurd. Like DC comic movie absurd. It will get called out on it in an OTT manner because of the standards set. Plot holes need to be earned not be part of the shows repertoire

Yeah, final scene with those two was good. You couldn’t ignore the ludicrous detective work though. Not in a show with “Detective” in the title!
Which is a real shame because they did build a beautiful plot over several years, if they brought it home better, it would have been among the best ever TV shows for me.
