Gunmen attack Mumbai in at least seven places

Agreed. They should be cremated and then scattered at an unrevealed location, as with all these types of things to avoid any weird shrine being made for sympathisers.

Damn police arriving after 20 minutes at the Leopold, and after 30 minutes at the station. The two terrorists walked calmly from the cafe to the Taj without getting apprehended.

Why is there no permanent armed police presence at one of the busiest stations in the world?

They'd have been the first to be shot.

If gunmen choose to walk into a crowded area with automatic weapons, then there would be scores, or hundreds, dead before any emergency services could get there. It would make little difference which coiuntry it was in.

Sorry but I disagree with this on all counts. You act though the cops would have some inept idiots who would have just walked up to the terrorists and allowed themselves to be shot. Certainly if the gunmen go into a crowded area there are gonna be scores of casualties, however if the cops blows the terrorists' heads off they are going to have a difficult time killing anyone else

Indian police are not a very professional organisation, and to be fair, I don't think anyone initially realised this was a major terrorist operation. They likely just thought it was a gang warfare.

Muslim organisation in Mumbai refuse to bury the terrorists, and have urged all other Muslims to refuse them a burial on Indian soil.

Great message to send out to any future wannabes.

Absolutely.

Might I also add that it would be a positive gesture for the Indian government to publicly thank the Pakistani government for their support in such difficult times that affect both countries. Perhaps the leaders of the two could meet and agree they both oppose terrorism from whatever source?
Cooperation not confrontation.

Of course I don't think the police are inept idiots - but firstly, terrorists would have the element of surprise which puts them at a distinct advantage.

Secondly, targets where there isn't a high police presence would be extremely easy to locate.

In Britain we don't have armed police in force on the streets. I don't know what it's like in other countries, but even in the USA where the police are armed a group of armed terrorists could take out any visible police by taking them by surprise.

Being inept doesn't come into it.

I doubt any Police force in the world carry AK 47s.

And in US itself, simple students have been able to go on a killing spree.

Terrorists got caught — and got away

The hijacked fishing trawler that brought the 10-man squad of terrorists to Mumbai’s shore on the night of November 25 was actually stopped by an unidentified Indian coastal patrol vessel — and let off because the suicide fighters flashed fake Gujarat government cards issued to fishermen, the lone terrorist now in police custody has revealed.

Inquiries are now under way with the Coast Guard, the coastal wing of the Customs and the Border Security Force (which patrols a disputed area called the Sir Creek area) to identify the vessel.

In a disclosure that indicates yet another failure in stopping the hit squad of suspected Lashkar-e-Tayyeba (Army of the Pure) terrorists, Ajmal Amir Kasab from Pakistani Punjab told his interrogators that they were aboard the MV Kuber 300 nautical miles (556 km) from Mumbai, off the coast of Jhakhau, Gujarat, when they were stopped.

They escaped by flashing Fisherman Identity Cards, issued by the Gujarat government. These cards were found on the Kuber, whose captain was killed after he guided the boat to Mumbai’s western shore.

Maharashtra too on December 1 announced it would issue smart cards to its fishermen.

The Gujarat Department of Fisheries of Gujarat issues these smart cards to fishermen of the state to help them prove their identity on the high seas and to get a mandatory customs okay needed before each fishing trip into international waters.

On the same day the 10 terrorists sailed along the coast of Gujarat enroute to Mumbai, a police station at the port town of Mandvi registered a case against “unidentified persons” for faking Fisherman Identity Cards.

“We have registered the offence and are investigating it.” said Police Inspector S N Jhala of Mandvi police station. “Till now we do not know who has been forging signatures of the authorities to get these cards issued from the Department of Fisheries.”

Earlier, on August 27, 2005, the local crime branch of the Kutch police arrested a man called Salim Amad Jat and found 76 fake smart cards with him.

Central security agencies are now investigating how these smart cards wound up with the terrorists. Kasab, injured in a gun battle with commados, is now in the custody of the Mumbai Police and is being held in a safe-house at an undisclosed location.

Am I missing something with post?

You're not missing much, except probably the worst joke ever on the Caf.

'Mum-buy this, mumbuy that' I think was his 'joke'

I understood that part.

I just can't get how can someone even think about a joke on this thread.

Uh, yeah. Anyway, they had information was to where security was. At one hotel, they entered and immediately shot the officer guarding the back door and his bomb sniffing dog.

Just because there are cops around, doesn't mean they wouldn't be the first to be shot. It's not like these guys were walking around with their weapons before attacking. They pulled them out of their bags and started shooting. They also waited for cops to pull up in their cars and attacked them. This was a very well planned attack.

To say otherwise is foolish.

Thought this might be of interest to some people, BBC News 24 do a weekly chat with foreign correspondents based in London and this week they had contributors focusing on Mumbai obviously.

Unfortunately they did have Yasmin Alibhai-Brown [probably only known to Brits] on who i do find rather annoying, Shahed Sadullah of the Daily Jang and Mustafa Karkuti are pretty reasonable in what they say in my experience.

Do you reckon this practice needs to be adopted by Western governments too? This idea wasn't suggested after similar attacks across Europe and in Israel.

Yes, they have to be commended
