Has political correctness actually gone mad?

Yes good observation. Years ago the British described themselves as a nation of shopkeepers but everyone used to grumble about shops closing at 5, early closing on Thursdays, nothing open on a Sunday. Some people came in and sorted that out, did well at it, everyone is happy but then the moaning starts. Being able to go to the curry house after closing time to get more beers and great food was revolutionary too. Before that it was chips if you rushed there before closing.

We’re a country that needs permanent parenting.

You see the same kind of thing with (bizarrely) dentistry. It’s spun off from the NHS. It’s a specialist field. Loads of cash.

For some reason a huge amount of white English folks will run off competing lines like “Why don’t we train our own dentists. I can barely understand ‘them...” and “I don’t know how anyone could do that, looking in peoples mouths all the time. It’s disgusting”.

That may be a niche observation but I’ve heard versions of those arguments EVERYWHERE.

We are a weird people.

I completely disagree with her point. That's my point. I even took the Harvard implicit bias test on race out of curiosity and was shocked about how bad it was. It's not hard for her to say "I found out I had internalized racism and unconcsious bias and I believe some white people may have too". But that's not what she said.

https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/Study?tid=-1

These tests are weird to me but then the three times I've done them I've shown no unconscious bias. They kind of feel like a reaction game rather than anything telling.

This is honestly getting ridicilous in my opinion (if it's true).

Though, if the soldiers themselves are OK with it, then who are we to complain.

Judging by the article, it's not a blanket ban on using the word "lad" in the army, but an attempt to avoid gendered terms like lad while talking about or to soldiers in Zoom/Team meetings. Because, obviously, some of those soldiers probably aren't lads.

Seems like just another example of the snowflakes at the Daily Mail being offended at something.

Are you interpreting it that way?

Soldiers have been banned from referring to each other as ‘lads’ in the Army’s latest gender equality drive.

Troops from 22 Engineer Regiment were told not to use the word because it may cause offence, even if no women are present.
"Even if no women are present".

Also, the words "mankind" and "sportsmanship", really?

Interestingly, “lads” is gender neutral in Ireland. Wouldn’t be unusual to hear a girl address a bunch of female friends using that word.

Those are from the Daily Mail's summary, which I don't really trust. The article goes on to say this:

The ban on ‘lads’ has emerged in a set of orders given by 22 Engineer Regiment’s sergeant major to all troops taking part in online meetings.

He told his troops that ‘values and standards’ [V and S] had been slacking recently while using Zoom calls or Microsoft Teams meetings to conduct military business.

He said: ‘There has been a drop in V and S over the last few weeks... Saluting/bracing up [coming to attention]... make sure people are getting paid the correct compliments... All are to remember D and I [diversity and inclusion] – “gents”, “men”, “lads” and other phrases are not to be used.’

Those are from the Daily Mail's summary, which I don't really trust. The article goes on to say this:
What about this?

A serving soldier said: ‘I’ve served on operations with lots of women. I didn’t meet one who was offended by the word “lads”.

'Someone of such a sensitive nature, be they male or female, would not last five minutes.

'I think the bosses are trying to solve a problem which frankly doesn’t exist.

'There is no engrained or subconscious bias in the use of words like “lads”... This is nonsense

Lads, it's Tottenham the British Army.

They probably wouldn't admit to being offended because of people like him.

Those quotes don't seem to discuss the actual details, it's essentially just a soldier saying PC gone mad. I'm sure they aren't hard to find.
What do you think about banning "mankind" and "sportsmanship"?

Seems a bit much, but language has power. In Norway we traditionally referred to occupations differently by gender, so lærer (teacher) and lærerinne (female teacher). I'm sure when someone suggested referring to all teachers as "lærer", some thought it was a bit much too.

Actually, just in January of this year the Norwegian government stopped referring to the heads of the counties (fylke) as fylkesmann, opting for statsforvalter instead (county governor, or state administrator). I know for a fact some people thought that was unnecessary, but it's a small and easy step to make.

Those I can understand (job occupations).

But banning words like mankind and sportsmanship is a bit much surely.

I like that. I dislike the ubiquitous 'guys' because I generally disapprove of Americanisms and it seems a bit contrived in Britain. Lads would do fine.

“Guys” is also gender neutral and ubiquitous in Ireland. I prefer ‘lads’. I think it’s one that mainly started in rural Ireland but it’s everywhere now.

I'm not looking forward to the future PC war movies.

People say that, but now 'firefighter' is routinely used instead of the old 'fireman', the Caf has banned several words over the years and language evolves over time ad infinitum.

Does anyone bemoan the fact we don't all still speak in biblical English?

When I find myself swearing at a woman, I make a point of calling her a dickhead. I feel like it's me playing my part towards gender equality.

Probably better than calling then cnuts tbf...
You get used to it. Doesn’t feel weird to me. Feel free to get it going across the pond.
No... I don't think I will.

Fecking hell it’s getting out of control, racist Cheese now, fecking CHEESE!! I’d love to see how they could spin that. In what possible way is cheese racist? :wenger:

Probably something to do with the fact that many from a BAME background are lactose intolerant, so it's probably something about it being problematic to serve in schools or work or something. Or perhaps cheese is simply just racist.

Has anyone suggested not using such a stupid fecking language?

That was my initial thought it must be to do with lactose intolerance. In which they need to trace it back to the source, the racist COWS!

Yeah, I presume it was that story about someone complaining cheese is a mainstay of school dinner menus, but cheese in itself cannot be racist, just what you do with it.

Alison-Plaumer-from-Extinction-Rebellion-1422913.webp

Ms Plaumer had stated: "Arguably, there is a racist element to serving dairy too much because 65 per cent of the world’s population are lactose intolerant, many from the BAME (black, Asian and minority ethnic) community.

"Loads of parents around here give lots of support to this. What do children want? They want action. They want it now."

Her petition requests two plant-based days are introduced at state-run schools as soon as possible – and for all council-run events to be plant-based once the pandemic is over.

Even the score by adding chilli powder to all school meals.

But really, I think this is a case of somebody with a particular axe to grind (in this case Plaumer is from Extinction Rebellion) jumping on a prominent bandwagon (in this case the fight against racism) to try and further their own agenda.

It obviously shouldn't be taken seriously.

Booze has a more legitimate claim to be racist. A lot of South East Asians lack an enzyme that mops up a metabolite of alcohol (aldehyde dehydrogenase) so flush/sweat whenever they drink. I once went on the piss with a bloke from Malaysia who got a clearly demarcated sweat patch on his t-shirt over his liver. Fecking hardcore.

Good call. I guess it's about time we sober up as a society.

East Asians are although Mongolians aren't, nor are Tibetans either. Explains soy milk and all that jazz, I guess.

Apparently a high percentage of West Africans are as well. Hmmmm...
