We’re a country that needs permanent parenting.

You see the same kind of thing with (bizarrely) dentistry. It’s spun off from the NHS. It’s a specialist field. Loads of cash.

For some reason a huge amount of white English folks will run off competing lines like “Why don’t we train our own dentists. I can barely understand ‘them...” and “I don’t know how anyone could do that, looking in peoples mouths all the time. It’s disgusting”.

That may be a niche observation but I’ve heard versions of those arguments EVERYWHERE.

We are a weird people.

These tests are weird to me but then the three times I've done them I've shown no unconscious bias. They kind of feel like a reaction game rather than anything telling.

Judging by the article, it's not a blanket ban on using the word "lad" in the army, but an attempt to avoid gendered terms like lad while talking about or to soldiers in Zoom/Team meetings. Because, obviously, some of those soldiers probably aren't lads.

Seems like just another example of the snowflakes at the Daily Mail being offended at something.

Soldiers have been banned from referring to each other as ‘lads’ in the Army’s latest gender equality drive.

Troops from 22 Engineer Regiment were told not to use the word because it may cause offence, even if no women are present.

Interestingly, “lads” is gender neutral in Ireland. Wouldn’t be unusual to hear a girl address a bunch of female friends using that word.

Seems a bit much, but language has power. In Norway we traditionally referred to occupations differently by gender, so lærer (teacher) and lærerinne (female teacher). I'm sure when someone suggested referring to all teachers as "lærer", some thought it was a bit much too.

Actually, just in January of this year the Norwegian government stopped referring to the heads of the counties (fylke) as fylkesmann, opting for statsforvalter instead (county governor, or state administrator). I know for a fact some people thought that was unnecessary, but it's a small and easy step to make.

“Guys” is also gender neutral and ubiquitous in Ireland. I prefer ‘lads’. I think it’s one that mainly started in rural Ireland but it’s everywhere now.

People say that, but now 'firefighter' is routinely used instead of the old 'fireman', the Caf has banned several words over the years and language evolves over time ad infinitum.

Does anyone bemoan the fact we don't all still speak in biblical English?
 
When I find myself swearing at a woman, I make a point of calling her a dickhead. I feel like it's me playing my part towards gender equality.

Probably something to do with the fact that many from a BAME background are lactose intolerant, so it's probably something about it being problematic to serve in schools or work or something. Or perhaps cheese is simply just racist.

That was my initial thought it must be to do with lactose intolerance. In which they need to trace it back to the source, the racist COWS!

Yeah, I presume it was that story about someone complaining cheese is a mainstay of school dinner menus, but cheese in itself cannot be racist, just what you do with it.

But really, I think this is a case of somebody with a particular axe to grind (in this case Plaumer is from Extinction Rebellion) jumping on a prominent bandwagon (in this case the fight against racism) to try and further their own agenda.

It obviously shouldn't be taken seriously.

Booze has a more legitimate claim to be racist. A lot of South East Asians lack an enzyme that mops up a metabolite of alcohol (aldehyde dehydrogenase) so flush/sweat whenever they drink. I once went on the piss with a bloke from Malaysia who got a clearly demarcated sweat patch on his t-shirt over his liver. Fecking hardcore.
