Sorry if this didn't deserve a new thread, feel free to move/lock/kill me, whatever.

Just wondering, is the January Window something we should expect movement in?
Mostly, under Ferguson and Gill we wouldn't do much business in the winter transfer window, but where it was felt we could use strengthening and perhaps didn't get all we wanted in the summer window, it was always a possibility.

It seems likely that Moyes went into this window hoping to get 2 midfield targets and a left-back. We got one central midfielder, is there a chance we will move for another in the Winter and perhaps pay over the odds, or do you think we will be happy waiting for the summer.

If Coentrao still wants to leave Real Madrid, I think there's a good chance we might make another move for him, atleast on loan. This could depend on whether or not he's cup tied for the Champions League (likely will be)?

Herrera - I think we'll know more on this soon, but with Bilbao not playing in Europe this season (right?) then do you think we'll try for him again? I'm not sure how keen he is going to be, I'd like to think his willingness to join us will have him willing to forgive.

Since January window of the 08-09 season, Moyes has had a fair amount of movement in the January transfer window; notable players who did join up though include Jo, Hitzlsperger, Donovan, Jelavic, Gibson, Pienaar, McFadden, Senderos (loan).

Notable January signings for United (08/09-): Zaha, Henriquez, Scholes, Lindegaard.

EDIT: I know it's early, but this isn't about lamenting over what's happened in this window.. Moyes was obviously desperate for a left-back (hence the Coentrao loan) - we still will be by January. United sources seemed to be suggesting that we may go back for Herrera in January and I'm sure it will be a question asked to Moyes in the next few weeks aswel.

Coentrao will probably be cup tied, and at this stage I suspect that the Herrara deal is dead and buried. I wouldn't expect anything anyway.

This thread opens literally 12 hours after the window closed!

Herrera still has a buyout clause. Unless the idea was to go back and save up for a bit longer before returning - nothing will change financially regarding that deal. If anything, I'd imagine him not being willing to sacrifice his own money for us after our disgraceful behaviour. That's if he's still willing to come.

I'd guess another club will just come in and pay 36m for him, and he'll join them, saying theclub made him feel wanted. We dismiss all of these kinds of statements as code for 'I wanted more money' every time, but now we've seen it isn't always like that.

Patrice Evra was a notable January signing. Angelo Henriquez was not a January signing btw.

It's just finished... can we please enjoy some fecking football?

There won't be any football for almost two weeks. Internationals don't count, that's not football, that's just shit on a stick.

And no, we shouldn't expect any significant movement in January. I doubt we have the financial clout anyway. And Woody couldn't handle a transfer window that's only a month long, he'd start putting bids in the middle of February.

Vidic, Evra and Larsson were the first that came to my mind too - but they were in 2006 and I didn't go back that far. I thought it might be more relevant to consider the more recent windows.

Just for feck sake, you realise we can still negotiate with any players and have the deal wrapped up with the player to join on 1st January? I know it doesn't happen as much, but perhaps get some practice bids in Woody... ;)

Ya I had Vidic in mind but missed while typing.

Yep, we're definitely going to go for Baines again. Coentrao would be better but feck it, Moyes really wants Baines.

Hopefully he's looking at either Luke Shaw or Ben Davies.

I hope we sign no one.

We already have enough strikers and players available to play behind the striker. A winger could be realistic, but there's no one out there who's both available and good enough to jump straight into the starting XI. We also have a lot of wingers, seeing as Kagawa also has been turned into a winger now. Signing a winger would also pretty much be mean no playtime for Januzaj and Zaha, which I'm really opposed to. As for CM, I don't want us to sign anyone unless it's an absolutely world beater, like Gündogan. Otherwise, I want us to keep playing Fellaini/Cleverley until one of them reaches a level satisfiably for United first XI football. In the goalkeeper and center back positions we are more than good enough. Evra don't need to be replaced yet, and Fabio is good enough to step in anyways. Rafael is a beast.

Let the players we have develop together. With Januzaj and Zaha on the bench, Fellaini in the starting lineup, no injuries on Nani and Kagawa, and Valencia back in form(it could happen), we're pretty much looking at a new and improved team from last season. And that's when we walked the title! We're more than good enough once we find our rythm...

After the start we've made the club can't afford not to spend unless we're really just writing this season off completely and chalking it down to experience...

I can't tell if you're really optimistic or just plain delusional.

Fabio and Cleverley aren't good enough to turn us into a formidable side.

I never intended Fabio to be first choice either. Based on last season, Evra is still a very capable leftback. No need for improvements there. At least not right now.

It's also not sure that Cleverley is going to be our first choice after Carrick. I'd say the odds are in Fellaini's favor. And even if you aren't satisfied with that, one player can't make us crap if we play well as a unit.

If Nani and Kagawa stay injury-free and Valencia finds his old form(the signs have been positive lately), then we suddenly have a brand new attack, if we compare with last season. Rooney also looks better than he's done for a long time.

Looks like the club have briefed the media about how we're prepared to spend big in January. And that we'll be back in for Baines and Herrea.

I'd rather we not spend any money in January and try and get this squad into top 4. Then clearout in summer and spend in summer too, take the whole year to focus on quality targets. After seeing Fellaini, I'm put off buying Baines.. Contreao would be a better bet for me.

He needs to get over his hard-on for Baines... it's fecking ridiculous, and the least of our problems.

A Winger and a Midfielder should clearly be the priorities.

We all thought that in the summer but the people at the club will have all sorts of physiological data on Evra and will know when we need to start using him more sparingly than we have done before. He's been such an important part of our attacking football these last few years you can see why we might need someone a bit special to replace him.

I don't disagree with any of that - I just can't see how a new left-back will sort our immediate problems out - If we're talking about just adding to the squad to compete. Plus we have Fabio.... though it would help if he gave him a chance to see what he can do there.

To be fair, I'm being a bit of a dick to get animated about something that probably isn't true

Does anyone think we need to buy a centre back in January? It may not be the position everyone wants as we have sufficient cover and the main issue is midfield etc but we keep being linked with a fair few centre backs so maybe Moyes doesn't perhaps have as great faith in our defence, probably bar Vidic , as maybe Sir Alex did?
