I can't help but feel like Woodward leaked that to blow some smoke up his own arse.

I like that Woodward refused to sit down with Chelsea representatives because of the Rooney situation.

Chelsea Men- "So that's the deal for Mata done. Can we have Rooney?"

Woodward - "No."

Chelsea men - "Ah go on, sure we gave you Mata"

Woodward - "Ah alright so"

I remember one anecdote with the Spaniard. It was on the 12th October 2010. The young Spanish team were in Varazdin, Croatia won 3-0. Rakitic lost his teeth.

There was a Spanish journalist who was with Mata and [Bojan] Krkic who had arranged an exclusive interview [ahead of the upcoming match] between Barcelona and Valencia, which was set for a few days later at the Nou Camp.

Then, when Mata came out of the locker room, a reporter gave him a red shirt, which Mata gave to his mother to put in his bag.

It seemed to me that it was an Eric Cantona, Manchester United shirt, but I wanted to check with Juan.

‘I saw that you put in the bag jersey. Is that a Manchester United shirt?’, I asked the Spaniard.

Mata laughed and replied: ‘Yes, this is United’s jersey. I’m a huge fan.’

At the time, the Spanish midfielder excelled in Valencia, and was one of the best young midfielders in Europe. ‘I hope that one day I will play at Old Trafford’, added Mata.

From his words I saw how much he loved United, and how he wished to join the Red Devils.

Wow that article piece just increased my love for him. He is my favorite player already.

He actually fecking said that: "I hope that one day I play at Old Trafford."

To be fair, he has played there already. Just not for United ;)

Here she is, with David Villa, who is probably applauding her for raising Juan.

If that story is true then one thing I'd like to say is that Chelsea behaved with exemplary respect towards their player. Honestly, to allow him to have a clause, to make a stipulation and then to revert the stipulation is pretty unusual for a player who's only been there a few years. I don't think Woodward comes out of it particularly well or badly. I suppose he looks like a man who's afraid to negotiate incase he gets shafted, but at least he's smart enough to know that.

Also strange that Mata's father was negotiating on our behalf.

I think Eddy deserves a bit of credit here. This story only came to light on Monday and was wrapped up by Saturday. I like that he refused to deal with Chelsea directly, it was a smart move.

Smart, for me. There are many reasons it made sense to not deal with Chelsea directly. Bringing up Rooney and being denied could have agitated Chelsea and halted any Mata transfer.

Yeah, I get that. You'd think a master negotiator would be confident enough in his own ability though. Strange one really.

How great is it signing a player we don't have to watch YouTube clips of to get an idea of his ability? Ace.

The amount of times over the last two years i've looked on admiring Mata playing for Chelsea, knowing he'd never turn out for us but still loving to watch him. The amount of sarcastic comments posted on here after he played well against us time and time again asking us to stick a cheeky bid in. In the summer when the Rooney thing was happening, some posted that we were batshit mental to turn down 10m plus Juan for Rooney.

I guess you could say that this still hasn't sunk in for me.

Great signing for Manchester United, i see an almost instant impact from the player. This will lift everyone connected with the club. I fear for Cardiff tomorrow night, they could be in for a hammering.

Wiki has him down as having number 7 on the squad page.
